Day Shift or Night Shift?

So, if you had a choice to work either on Day or Night shift, which shift would you choose?

I personally would work Nights. I LOVE nights. I am a true night owl. However, at the job I'm studying for, that won't be possible. No one is going to want to be rehabilitated at 2 in the morning. :(

I'll have to become a day owl.... :(

Day shift, for definite. Sleeping for extended periods during the light hours just seems a bit antisocial to me.

Night, definitely. You meet the most interesting folks in the dead of the night. Plus you often work alone and I really prefer to sleep all day.

I worked a night shift one summer during college years. I never recommend it.

I'm not going to expect anyone to read that because it's boring as hell. Essentially, it says that due to the decreased exposure to natural lighting and interruptions of circadian rhythms, people who work at night are at an increased risk of cancer and certain kinds of heart disease. Your body produces melatonin, a tumor suppressant, primarily during the night, and night shifts disrupt its production. In addition, night shift work increases susceptibility to insomnia and cluster headaches.

It's really not healthy.

I've worked 5pm to 5am in fast food. Do.not.want.

I've worked 11pm to 7am at a hospital. Do.not.want.

I've worked 10pm to 4am at a radio station. Do.not.want.

The best shift I've had was 5am to 2pm. No traffic, got to eat lunch at a normal time, got home in time to nap before my nightlife.

I've worked night shifts, and if I lived alone it would be fine. However I discovered that my family are incredibly noisy during the day. Heaven forbid I wake them up when they're sleeping though. At the moment I work day/evening shifts (I'm finished by 11pm usually), and thats working out fine for now.

I'm never really up and going until about 3-4pm, no matter what time I get up at, never properly awake and going until about 8-9pm no matter what time I get up at, and can't sleep until about 4-5am, again, no matter what time I get up at.

I spy with my little eye a career involving night shifts.

I like the night anyway. It's more peaceful.

depends really for instance working a night shift on weekends would most likely send my body into shock

but I did work 1300-2100 which was rather groovy though not nearly as much as 1000-1800 (still getting out of bed but leaves me plenty of time to put my party clothes on)

I've worked 10pm to 4am at a radio station. Do.not.want.

you was a radio D.J?

Day because I can't sleep at all during the day. I tried going back to sleep at 9 after waking up at 6 because I was still exhausted and my head was hurting worse than usual (since the TV woke me up when someone else turned it on), and I couldn't fall asleep because there was light outside. This is why I can't usually wake up any time after 8:30 or 9...it'll get really bright so I have to wake up.

I currently work a 6 am to 2:30 pm. it's ok. I end early enough to run errands or do chores normally reservd for days off. I like it.

I used to work a 11 pm to 7:30 am shift. I slept in the morning and woke up in the early afternoon. that was ok.

I also used to work a 2 pm to 10:30 pm shift and that was alright since I could sleep in and still do stuff in the morning before work.

so it really dosn't matter to me.

I worked there for about 2 years while also working days at a Mexican restaurant.

I didn't have the option of working nights (that's 14:30 to 24:00) anyway, but I don't know whether the extra £1 an hour is really enough to make me want to do the most vile office job in the universe, being data capture (ugh!), at midnight, considering I'm more of a morning person than an evening person anyway.

Having said that, if I were in the day shift, I could get away from Plillipa Collins's 'Seven Hours of James Blunt' radio show and Adam, the most annoying person in the history of Man.

I work a rotating shift at my place of employment, and night shift is better, by FAR, for one simple reason;
...all of "management" has gone home, so there is a distinct lack of "deadwood" wandering about trying to justify it's (obscene) salary/budget.

That, there, ALONE, makes nights worthwhile! :D

I actually get a hell of a lot more done without the deadwood dipshits brigade hanging around. Dare I say, I'm actually...PRODUCTIVE!

Having done both, I am going to say day shifts.

But if given the choice I will rather have afternoon shifts, over the both of them.

That's why I always enjoyed working weekends, didn't have to worry about them, and you could take things at your own pace, provided the work got done of course. Not to mention that whenever it we were on day shifts my team would bring in sausages, steaks, salad, chicken wings and we would have a BBQ at lunch time just the 9 of us without anyone else hanging around.

Yes indeed...I work at a hotel, like Maraque.

Mostly due to the company and not the shift, but I've been finding it harder to sleep during the day the longer I've been here.

My businesses are all online, so I don't have to do any particular schedule. But 95% of the time, it's night, because I like to be up then.

In fact, I'm going to bed soon (it's almost 9AM here). By the time I wake up, the neighbors should about be coming home dead-tired from their soul-sucking day jobs... :D

Actually that is another reason why it is good to work nights, because all of the people who are coming into work are all tired and complaing about how they want to go to bed, then you say with a smile "yeah that's where I am going now"

The downside is that everybody is heading to bed and you have to go into work and you are dead tired and all you want to do is sleep, but you have to go into work while everyone else gets to go to their nice warm bed.

I worked nights for a lot of years
I am a night person and like being out when there are less people.

That having been said all my friends work days, as such it sucks ass to have to go to work 2 hours into a great party on a consistant basis. I would rather suck it up and work days and be around people when I want to then work the more preffered hours

I loved the four to midnight shift until my kids grew and started school then that shift sucked. Never got to see the kids except on the weekends and a lot of times I had to work one or two weekends a month.

One time the Lt. asked me to take a new job and promised we would rotate shifts (days, swings, mids) every three months. After about 4 or 5 months on the swing shift I asked her when I was going to days. She him hawed around and I figured it wasn't going to happen. A few days later the Col. offered me a new job and I immediately accepted the new position.
Later that night the Lt. said, "Sgt. you didn't even hesitate when the Col. offered you the job. Why?" I said, "No Mam, remember the conversation we had the other night about shifts? That's a day job Lt."

I used to work an afternoon-evening shift (3pm-11pm) and that wasn't too bad, especially since my bf worked a swing shift (5:30pm-1:30am). If I could teach 1st grade at night, that might actually be kind of brilliant. The kids would be all tired out and complacent, and I wouldn't have to get up early in the morning. I should write to the district about this.

At my job, we shift every 4 months, and I am coming up on nights in a couple of week. I am looking forward to it. My wife hates it, But I prefer to work at night. The main reson being, is I will naturally be awake at night on my days off.

As my sig points out, I am an engineer-in-training, condemning me to a lifetime of shift work. I'm trying to avoid this by going into research -- perhaps I will be able to avoid the lifetime in the factory. (That would be a fate worse than death for me, I've done it before.)

I usually work from 5:30 am to noon on sunday broadcast shifts at the station, my ideal shift when I hit full time would be 6 to midnights. It means I can be at work during my peak hours and have plenty of time to do things during the day.
