Oh my fsm. I love you, NBC!

Remember that thread I posted weeks ago about how American telly sucked? Well, I take all of that back now.

I was watching the women's marathon on NBC (go Britain!) when all of a sudden they cut to commercials and this came on.

http://www.nbc.com/Crusoe/video/clips/crusoe/281067/

I have never felt so much bliss watching a tv commercial for an upcoming series. For the billions of moronic, testosterone filled, macho-man, redneck shows that NBC has cranked out, they FINALLY made something that caught my interest.

From what I've seen, it's based off of the Robinson Crusoe novel, and the 2008 telly series will include...

- Pirates
- 18th century British setting and culture
- Muskets and swordfights
- Adventure!!
- More pirates
- A underlying multicultural message about the friendship of Crusoe and the African chap (I admit I'm not familiar with the novel so I don't know his name, but I'm a sucker for shows that portray minorities w/o stereotypes in hero roles :P)
- Authentic historical costumes from the time period
- Chicks with swords :P
- PIRATES PIRATES PIRATES

I just hope the rest of America will love the show as much as I will. Unfortunately most people who watch NBC haven't exactly shown a lot of understanding or preference for historic fictions (New Amsterdam was cut by NBC). I will unleash my wrath upon NBC and friends if they decide to cut Crusoe after two episodes.

Who else is excited about this? :)

Pirates? They were only mutineers in the novel, wannabe pirates who turned to a bunch of spineless pussies when they encountered an angry hermit and illiterate black guy.

i know what you mean.

but to me it depends on whether its completely episodic or if there is a story arc that will end up with crusoe returned to england.

(if thats how the original story goes)

What's worse is if they decided after a few episodes that it was too cultural and british-y so they scrap the show and make an Americanised version of it for better ratings.

Twenty seconds into the preview, I could tell that this show will have nothing to do with the original story other than the very superficial. There were no wimmens in Robinson Crusoe!
And I also noticed not one single fence in that preview. Not one! Nor any corn. No corn bread, no corn fields, no miraculously appearing corn seeds, no stockpiles of corn, no long rambling monologues about corn, no plans to make beer out of corn, no corn harvests.

They have to chuck women in, it would be 'right' if there wasn't at least one, but that's TV for you they take a story and change it around to suit themselves.

oh i got too focused on the island thing.

but you forget that there were women in the movie--both men got married.

in any case, what can be sustained in a 2 hour movie is quite different from years worth of episodes on US tv--20ish hours every year. even the show bonanza got the boys hooked up with women now and then (otherwise it was 5 men living in a nevada ranch house without a woman in sight--with only one of them not being related to the rest. ooohhh the fanfiction porn possibilities of THAT scenario)

I never watched Brokeback Mountain, not out of any kind of phobia stuff but because the movie never really interested me.. like at all.

Fortunatly the mid 20th century was a much more innocent time.. I'm not even sure people knew what sex was until they hit thier mid 50's.

for the people touting the multicultural aspect of the book.
The first word Friday was taught in English was master. As I mr. white man am your master. sorry the book was written during the white man's burden time in history for the British empire.

Second if the series is popular they will want it to run indefinitely. So the first season might follow some of the books story line but subsequent seasons will only follow story line during season premieres and season finales everything in between will be Gilligan's Island with a black guy and no girls.

Friday wasn't African, he was a member of some black cannibal tribe that lived on the coast South America. There was an African kid, of course, but Crusoe sold him off to a boat captain months before he got trapped on the island.
