Console wars: Do you own the console you root for?

I switched my allegiance from Sony to Microsoft weeks after PS3 came out. What happened to all the good japanese rpgs? And thanks a lot sony for jacking up your prices to $500+. I think the wii is pretty fun (brawl, etc etc) but they're mostly for casual gamers. I'm leaning towards the 360 right now as they have some of the best games of all genres.

I hope ps3 dies.

The fact that I completely suck at video games may have something to do with this.Hmm... I'm not convinced there is "suck at video games."

It's possible to suck at certain kinds of video games. Some people can't do racing games. Others can't figure out how to aim in FPS.

But there are strategy games, puzzle games, turn-based games... in which I'm at a loss to imagine how one can simply "suck," or suck so badly that one cannot enjoy playing them. Unless your brain is so badly wired you just can't play games, period--whether on a video screen or not.

Perhaps your friends just play the wrong kind of games.

Hmm... I'm not convinced there is "suck at video games."

Perhaps not.

My intention was not to suggest that I am or would be bad at every video game ever created. This is probably not the case. Rather, it was a frivolous reference to the fact that the few times I have tried playing a video game (usually under substantial pressure), I have failed at it... miserably, and to the amusement of my friends.

Rather analogous to the even fewer times I have been coerced into playing football, really.

Seriously?

This kind of attitude is what's important about which global conglomerate we get our entertainment from?

Good Lord, folks, it's not bad enough people spend countless hours in front of these things, but we gotta get pissy about which one does the best job of wasting our time?

My opinions on consoles in general notwithstanding, why not just like what you like and let others do the same? I know that's not very General of me to say, but fer cryin' out loud, unless you own stock in Sony, MS, or Nintendo, who cares? Just play, enjoy your system and get on with life.

Rather analogous to the even fewer times I have been coerced into playing football, really.I know the experience well. ;)

Though I'll venture to say it's one that passes with childhood--as, that is, one's friends grow up and/or one discovers better friends. Alas, "childhood" in this case seems to last well into the mid-twenties...

My point is, I was terrible at football as a child. And at baseball. And basketball? Forget about it. Hence it was a terrible embarrassment whenever I was cajoled or coerced into playing... and, indeed, I'd be laughed at.

For many years I avoided such things... but I do have friends who enjoy them, and they seem to have fun together playing... and, I noticed, they no longer apply the dreaded peer pressure. If they ask and I say no, that's the end of it. More importantly, if they ask and I tell them I suck, they say, "Well, who cares? Let's just have some fun." And, unlike the friends of earlier years, I can tell they really mean it.

As it turns out, under those conditions... it can be really fun to play. And as a result I've gotten better... though I do, without qualification, still completely suck. :)

For my part, I play the other side when it comes to video games: invitations, no pressure, and plenty of help along the way. (Recently I've been introducing noobs to this great little game called "Toy Home," which is so chaotic on battle mode that you hardly have to be "good" to play.)

I take it you aren't a console gamer? Consoles aren't the same as say... A DVD player. Each console is completely different, does different things, and has different games. I, for one, believe the 360 is over hyped, and the PS3 overpowered/overpriced. And what's all this with:
why not just like what you like and let others do the same?
Since when was I stopping anyone from playing/buying a PS3/Xbox 360?

Then why not just say that? Calling one console a "dead lab" seems far too antagonistic for what is a personal decision about where your entertainment money goes. What you believe might be relevant to others, but probably isn't.

And what's all this with:

why not just like what you like and let others do the same?

Since when was I stopping anyone from playing/buying a PS3/Xbox 360?

For fuck's sake, is it so hard to read a sentence and take it at face value? Where in that sentence do you see me saying you're stopping anyone from doing anything? How does "like what you like and let others do the same" equate to me saying you're stopping anyone from doing a damned thing? Your personal persecution complex seems to be the problem here.

Your over-the-top response to someone else's system preference was what I was talking about. It's all a lot of staring at pixels and cramping one's hands. What does it matter which corporation's pockets you fill? Some people prefer Wii, some XBox, some PS3. There's never going to be an objective way to convince any fan of any system that they've bought the wrong one. The only thing more potentially wasteful than spending 12 hours a day in front of a console is debating which console to use when doing so. Still more pointless is castigating someone for their choice.

Of course, the same could be said for the US presidential election, but that's another matter.

CM, apologies, I forgot to answer your first question. I was a console gamer from Intellivision to NES to PS1 to PS2. I sold my PS2 in April of 2007 because I was spending too much time playing with it. Which is to say any time at all. I prefer playability and interest to superior graphics presentations, and couldn't see myself upgrading to the current generation. I still play UT2k4 online from my iMac, as well as Civilization IV (I was given a WoW three-months free over one summer, and I refused to renew it for the same reason I sold my PS2 -- too much of a time-suck).

If you're young and/or choose to spend the kind of time gaming demands, good for you. I don't anymore. I still like console games, I just don't own one anymore.

Though I'll venture to say it's one that passes with childhood--as, that is, one's friends grow up and/or one discovers better friends.

I'm recalling things that happened years ago, not anything particularly recent. And my friends were never particularly cruel about it; they were, and are, good-natured people. Just a bit inconsiderate sometimes.

As it turns out, under those conditions... it can be really fun to play. And as a result I've gotten better... though I do, without qualification, still completely suck. :)

Yes, I've had this experience with sports, too. When I went to Costa Rica this summer, I was gently persuaded into playing a game of soccer... and found, to my astonishment, that not only did I manage a modicum of competence (!), but I actually enjoyed it.

I still flat-out refuse to play (US) football, though. Soccer, at least I can kick, kinda-sorta.
