With Russia attacking Georgia and threatening to attack Poland whilst US forces are stretched thin in the middle east things are not looking too good. So I beleive it is time for us to prepare for the worst. WWIII might be declared, there might be nuclear war, there might be WWIII and nuclear war and possible an alien invasion for good measure. The question is....are you prepared.

Damit people. Stop panicking, There will be no WW3.

Every 1st world country knows by now that there is nothing to gain from traditional warfare.

There may be isolated cases fo 1st world vs 3rd world, but nothing that can be considered a world war. 1st worlds have the brains to know that nuking anywhere is a bad idea. 3rd worlds dont have the capacity.

There isn't going to be a war between the superpowers.

Yet another local war maybe, but both the Russians, and even the Americans (whose government I don't generally credit with a surplus of cerebral capacity) know that nuking each other isn't the road to victory. Just keeping arming the proxies and talk them into dying on your behalf, it's worked so far.

Let's see... I was born in the 70s, in a town in Western Germany about 30km away from the border with Eastern Germany, and maybe 50km away from the border of Chechoslovakia.

I grew up prepared for WW III. And I've seen situations far, FAR worse then the current one not resulting in another war.

The only thing about this situation that really gets me is the incredible irony...

I was born in Milan in 1976.
This means that I survived:
The Seveso Disaster
The Cold War
The "strategia della tensione"
The Democrazia Cristiana
The Craxi era
The 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy (and Italy winning the World Cup in '82 and '06)
The mafia bombings in early '90s
31 editions of the Sanremo festival of italian song (you know, "cuore-amore! mandolino! maaammaaaa!!!")
AAAAND... 3 Berlusconi cabinets (and currently struggling against the 4th)

I think I've aquired good survival skills. A little nuclear war doesn't scare me... it's my country who gives me the creeps!

While I was born in 1987 in Mississippi, and the worst disaster I survived was a minor hurricane, I'm quite in agreement that things will need to get a whole lot worse before we start 'getting ready'.
Right now its just politics. The US frequently does EXACTLY what Russia is doing right now. The Russians are just rebuilding a bit of reputation, maybe in preparation to take over a few small neighbors. We'll probably end up selling them atlases to show the new Russian Empire or something. Its the American Way, after all.
Of course, keeping a generalized disaster kit around (in case of any sort of emergency) is never a bad idea. While nuclear wars are unlikely, you never know when an earthquake might hit.

Nope. The US didn't even bother trying. There's too many missiles betwixt the US and Russia to be realistic about one's odds of survival. Of course, the Moscow shield has the added benefit of being one that mounts nukes, so that even if you do manage to knock down all inbounds, all of the local electronics will be fried beyond recognition.

It would be tough. If you happen to be facing down 20,000 Russian MBT's, and strategic bomber strikes, all the while suddenly having been abandoned by your really huge NATO ally, the US...it would be tough. That, plus cutting out of the organization might keep the Russians out of your country.

I've a bit of a tough time seeing the willingness of the French to go to war for the Poles, especially if the US just set the wonderful example of being unwilling to do so.

But, it's not improbable that it would fall apart. It's just a tough task.

Rather, I'm saying that the shock of being suddenly ditched by the US would be a shock.

The US would bring a lot of firepower to the party, roughly doubling what the EU would bring on land, and trebling it at sea.

what about unity in the face of Advesry (sp?)

One as huge as Russia is pretty tough. The incentives to bail would be pretty high.
