How Do You Start Your Day?

The Caffeine thread started me thinking (I know, I know, that's how I get in trouble). So how do you start your day? Do you eat breakfast or drink it or forgo it altogether?

I usually start with a cup of coffee, freshly ground and brewed, with milk and sugar, and an 8-oz glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. I can't eat right after I get up for some reason, but the coffee and juice seem to get me started properly.

I don't consume anything in the morning. I drink coffee only at work and at home after work, continuously until bed. I don't eat until night. I'm told these are all bad habits, but they're not going anywhere. :)

I usually begin with prayer....And if I have time I will add a quick bible study in there. Then I shower, brush my teeth, get dressed, and go to work/school/where ever. I never eat breakfast.

I have a soupmug full of coffee with enough sugar to slap me awake before the caffeine begins its work and french vanilla creamer so it doesn't taste like the crappy coffee it actually is. I then try and fit in a small bowl of oatmeal mixed with cold cereal and, if I'm actually hungry, some cottage cheese (maybe mix it with sour cream, depending on my mood). I do this literally every morning when I'm taking classes and most morning when they're not. If I get annoyed at the repetition, I'll have a corndog instead or something to spite...the repetition, or something.

Hit snooze button about three times, stagger out of bed (occasionally moaning "brainnssss"), get a shower then as I start to feel more human, put on coffee.

I used to not eat any breakfast but my blood sugar was all over the place (I already have low blood pressure which doesn't help) so I tend to have some nuts and seeds since anything heavier makes me nauseous.

with a bowl of noodles and broth; and a blood pressure pill.

cafine before solids gives me diaria, plus, well i like it, but as an after dinner or mixed with the milk and chocklet i put on dry cerial for desert, also generally later in the day.

i do put other things in the noodles and broth though, usually hamburger or tuna fish. and alway a little lemon from the lemon bush in our yard.

and yes i do start the day by eating. i'm not awaike until i've eaten something. and none of that damd grease or sugar 'breakfast food' type crap either. eggs too i save for later in the day, if i'm going to have/make anything with them in it.

hamburger or noodles and broth IS quicker and easier, both to cook and on the stomic, at least mine anyway, first thing in the day, then just about all that other pseudotraditional crap that's supposed to be.

I really can't eat anything till ive been awake for an hour or more, so i have breakfast at work.

You pressed the cat and threw the snooze at the phone?

I work third shift, 11pm to 7am...when most people are having breakfast, I'm having lunch.

Makes for weird conversations...

"What did you have to eat this morning?"
"Some buttered shrimp and a baked potato"
"Dude..."

I wake up just before work...I shower, get dressed, and go to work. Food comes after, except for the occasional granola bar.

Depends on if I feel like cooking/grinding coffee beans.

Though, lately my day has started at 5:30PMish because my sleeping pattern got fucked up due to a recent drug binge.. >_>

So yeah, dinner = breakfast anymore.

Open eyes, get out of bed, make a pint of coffee, go upstairs to my den and smoke 2 or 3 cigarettes whilst drinking the coffee and checking emails, go downstairs to bathroom and shit, shave and shower, get dressed.

Average elapsed time from sleeping to fully awake and ready for the day... 30-40 minutes.

Generally speaking, I like variety. But typically upon waking up after a sleep of any reasonable length, I do one or more of the following: Brush my teeth, Go to the bathroom, Have a beverage(sometimes caffeinated), Have an orgasm, shower, tickle my spouse and/or wonder what I can't remember about the previous night's antics.

I get up mostly around 10:30 am unless I have work when I will wake at 9. This pattern will suit me until I go back to uni in a few weeks time! Then we'll see what lectures I have and when and adjust my sleeping pattern around these.

Wake up after a snooze or two.
Look at my clock for a minute or so, figure that I better actually get up.
Usually, some string of expletives about waking up, followed by some incoherent grumbling, usually finishing with a "Well, shit. I better get going."

Stumble into the bathroom, brush teeth, shower, etc, and then throw on whatever clothes I can find that are fairly clean and that don't look horrible together. Either put my contacts in or my glasses on, depending on time, and/or laziness.

Pack my computer, whatever textbooks I need for the day if I have any classes, and anything else I might need into my bag. Spend at least 10 minutes looking for one of these things and my keys.

Step outside, check that I have everything. Realize I don't, say "God damn it!" (or similar) go back inside to get whatever I've forgotten.

Go, wait at the bus stop, get to campus, get coffee from the student center (92 cent refills on the mugs they sell!:)) and then go to either work or class, whatever I have first (or if I only have the one on that day).

By wishing I could sleep longer.

But seriously...

I wake up at about 5:45 from my wife telling me it's time to go. I get up, grab whatever clothing I was wearing the day before and put it on.

Then wish I could sleep longer.

Then I shuffle out to the living room and put on some shoes and gather my wallet, keys and phone and we head out to the van and I take her to the subway station, all the while with our baby in tow.

Then I wish I could sleep longer.

I drop her off and come home, where if the baby has fallen back asleep I put her down and turn on Star Trek which comes on at 6 AM. If I'm sleepy enough I'll go back to bed until 7:15 or if not or the baby won't sleep I stay u p, eat breakfast, wish I could sleep longer, wish I could still drink coffee, and have my breakfast and vitamins.

At 7:15 I shower, brush teeth, etc and get ready for work, all the while wishing I could sleep longer.

Then I take the baby and we go to the babysitter's where I drop her off and head to work to be there by 8AM. (Yes, I live VERY close to where I work. glee!)

I get in and wish I could go back to bed, and grumble at my co-workers who drink coffee. Sometimes I get around this by drinking a Pepsi, and sometimes I exercise self-control and drink orange juice or water.

*Edit: Changed 'without baby in tow' to 'with our baby in tow' Sheesh! I don't neglect my kids I swear ;)

I have a morning ritual that I need to share. I call it "the terminator". First I crouch down in the shower in the classic "naked terminator traveling through time" pose. With my eyes closed I crouch there for a minute, visualizing either Arnold or the guy from the second movie (not the chick in the third one because that one sucked) and I start to hum the terminator theme. Then I slowly rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me to proceed through my day as an emotionless, cyborg badass. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It ruins the fantasy.

Get up. Somehow manage to get to the local YMCA (no freaking clue how, it's a 20 minute drive... maybe when I'm sleepy I can teleport! I must do further research into this) and begin my workout, starting out with a 1.5 mile run, making sure I do it without stop, and then finish up with a .5 mile walk, all while listening to the Linkin Park "Reanimation" album on my iPod, always starting with "Krwlng" (Remix of "Crawling," which I used to use to get pumped-up before a Paintball match), just because I consider it one of the most awesome songs I've ever heard. Then I sit for a few minutes and tap my feet to get rid of ridiculously painful shin-splints, which I start getting within the first lap of running the 26 laps I have to do to go a full two miles.

It's funny to watch really old people walk and talk, for some reason. However, it's awesome to watch them run, because you know after being alive for say, 60 years, they are still a true badass.
And when you're 18, it's fun to yell at people (I only do this to my friend's parents or other people I know), "You're not old yet! Don't let some kid pass you! Stop walking and move!" And just be a general good-hearted jerk to try to push them to their limit. Yeah, that always makes me happy, which is a wonderful way to start your day! If I, a computer nerd, can run 1.5 miles without stopping and still be able to have an epic fight-to-the-death in a Battle Royal of Fencing (never happened, but I could do it! I swear!), then everyone should at least push to their limits! This is America, and I plan to turn it all into my own personal militia with which to take over the world! One YMCA at a time!

The run is typically followed by a very rigorous workout on the work-out machines, which are all new (whole YMCA is less than 3 years old). Then, after working my arms and stomach so hard, I somehow manage to drive home without crashing.

Good God, I'm insane, and in so much pain right now, two hours after my morning workout. I should just do what everyone else does and use coffee to wake me up.

(GAH! THAT FLASHING ADVERTISEMENT AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE IS GIVING ME A HEADACHE! IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO TYPE OUT THE WORD ADVERTISEMENT BECAUSE I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE WORD WHILE IT WAS FLASHING!)

It starts with a good pre-alarm snuggle, followed by some excellent sex, then a long hot shower together, and we go downstairs and the coffee we set up the night before is waiting for us (Starbuck's Gold Coast), and we go out on the back porch (it's a fully enclosed deck) and hang out a bit before I go off to work, and she goes upstairs to wake the kids.

Nice... when I get married, I want my morning to be like that.

Gaah. My dreams have been hyper-realistic lately. I get extremely freaked out by too many of them, and seriously think they happened when I wake up. It used to be I'd wake up and be like, "Oh, nice dream. Oh well." But now I actually woke up crying once (I had a nightmare that my girlfriend, whom I love dearly, of 22 months poisoned herself intentionally and wouldn't let me take her to the hospital, and she resisted all efforts of my trying to save her... Freud would love to hear some of my dreams). Similar dreams like that, like finding my best friend and younger sister in bed together during... relations... (best friend and sister are actually dating each other for a few months now, real life nightmare that could possibly turn into the nightmare I had about them)... Gah. Why must my dreams now be so realistic?

I've gone as long as ten minutes wondering if my dreams were real, or, for some of the really good ones, hoping that they were. Why can't I have cool action-dreams anymore where I beat the tar out of a thousand terrorists with nothing but a K-bar, or the one where I was a member of the 101st Airborne? (Three days of watching the Band of Brothers series all the way through once per day, will give you hardcore dreams.)

Aaaaaah.... I can't wait until I wake up and see my wife right there next to me.

I wake up at 5am and pee, and then I make sure the coffee timer worked for hubby's coffee and make him breakfast. Then I shower and brush my teeth and all other manner of grooming and get dressed. My children wake up at 7am and I make them breakfast and eat with them, then we start school.

I would like to explain that I don't eat breakfast with my husband for a few reasons, first it's too early and will throw off my schedule all day (like lunch!) and second I'm very nauseous the first hour or so after I wake up so it's not appetizing, and third, his breakfast is food I can't eat and so it's kinda icky.

2) Let the dogs out.
3) Chuck the younger dog back inside so the older one can have a little outside time alone.
4) Depending on if I fixed any food the night before I either nuke leftovers or eat cereal.
5) Shower
6) Dress and go to work.

Eating breakfast is very important. Firstly, if you're going to eat carbs, the best time to eat them is breakfast - they're more likely to go to your energy than your thighs and hips, and those who eat breakfast have shown to have a 20% increase in brain function throughout the day.
It also increases your metabolism, which helps you get more energized. It may not be appetizing, but it is necessary. At the very least, take a protein shake. Heck, it's like being a kid and not wanting to eat your veggies, but now you don't have anyone to make you, and it's far more important once you're older Just eat smaller portions if it's going to throw off your health at all by adding food. Heck, drink a V8 for breakfast. You get used to them, and then even make different flavors now, like Hot & Spicy... I got addicted to those, especially once I cut soda almost entirely from my diet... I needed something with flavor, even if that flavor sucked in general.

depends on which sarky we're talking about.

Weekend/vacation/unemployed sarky usually wakes up around noon, drinks a large glass of water (no, not always for a hangover...I just get really dehydrated at night), check some websites, and eventually shower.

Work sarky gets up, showers first thing, eats breakfast (a bagle, eggs, depends on the mood), brushes teeth, and heads to work

Let's see. Wake up at 5:30, check email, news sites, and weather then shut off the computer. Tiptoe out into the kitchen to start coffee and get the paper. Tiptoe into the bathroom to shave and shower. Tiptoe back into my room to dress for school. Tiptoe back into the kitchen to enjoy my super mug o' coffee with enough cream and sugar to knock over a horse and either toasted something (usually with peanut butter and jam) or a bowl of some kind of cereal with a piece of fruit depending on the season while reading the paper. Then tiptoe back to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Tiptoe to my room to grab my backpack and, during summer, my barley tea, then carefully wake my wife so we can tiptoe out to the entrance way and say goodbye to each other, then off to school.

At any point in time that I fail to tiptoe, I run the risk of getting an 11-month-old visitor who may want to talk, play, cry, or just go back to sleep while using his daddy as a pillow, regardless of the fact that said daddy really needs to go to work.
