I watched that guy win his first medal this olympics in the individual medley (the event I swam before I gained a whole other human in size...)-that dude is crazy fast. They had a line that represented the record he set earlier that day and he beat it by a length. The sad thing was that second place also beat it-that's got to suck, you broke the record that was set earlier that day and still got smoked by the giant manfish that set that record.

My grandmother used to be very involved with the US synchronized swimming team.

Anyway, I root mainly for the American team. It's the only time I'm really like "America! Fuck yeah!," but I figure that's okay in sports, same as there's nothing wrong with rooting for Cal athletics teams. All in good fun.

Besides my own team, I'll root for the Irish, the Icelanders, sometimes Norway and Sweden, sometimes France, sometimes Hungary. I'll root for specific players of other teams if I think they're cool or retiring or something like that.

In any event where the US doesn't medal, I'm all about the underdog.

im more interested in the individual athletes performances. the chinese men are so great to watch in gymnastics, for example. and im very excited for michael phelps' drive to win a record number of gold medals in swimming.

i could not give less of a fuck about the professionals who are competing for their countries. i dont care if the williams sisters win medals or if the US basketball team wins anything.

Talking about that, does anyone remember seeing the East Timor swimmer at the 2000 Olympics?

I wish I could find the video but there was a swimmer who swam the 100m freestyle, he wasn't that great but he was all only in the pool, and when he finished the entire complex quite a few tens of thousands of people all stood up and clapped him, quite an experience for someone who had come from a country that had less than a year ago just declared its independence from Indonesia and had suffered at the hands of the Indonesian military for doing it.

If I find the video I will place it up here, or if someone else knows it they can do us.

What about the kid from India who picked up the gold for air rifle? I understand that he's a national hero in India now and that his mother is being inundated by offers from families of young women who would like to marry him. All this because he won a gold medal. Kind of cool, really.

I'm surprised at how young he is? And I did a quick wiki search on him and ever international event barring these Olympics he has participated in for the past three years (which means he was 11 at his first) he has won except for one synchronised diving last year where he came second quite amazing. That kid still has a lot of years to go and I know that at the London Olympics when he will be 18 he is going to blitz the diving.

I only saw the women's competition, and that was their own fault. Gymnastics is a mental sport moreso than a physical one, and the Chinese are just quite good at it.

I tend to support the Chinese, because this is their show and I want them to have fun with it. The Germans because I happen to be one of them, and the various Africans who are just happy to be there. Like the canoe guy from Togo (http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-08/12/content_9230814.htm).
