Do you read signatures?

Neu Leonstein

I tend to put lots of things that might be of interest and that I happen to find on my travels into my sig. But I wonder how many people actually read it.

So do you have signatures turned to visible? Do you bother looking at them? When there are links in them, do you go and see what they are?

Oh, and just because we need a popularity contest that's been done a thousand times: who has the best signature?

If a sig catches my eye then I read it.

I read signatures, and usually go to the links provided if they're off of NSG.

EDIT: Drat. After posting that, I'm obligated to read every non-NSG link. I've already looked at Neu Leonstein's, looks like Londim's music blog is next.

I have signatures turned off. They just get in the way.

If people started sigging stuff I said again then I might turn them on out of vanity.

If its a poster I agree with a lot or share music taste I might check their signature for any political links or reference to music blog or bands they like. Otherwise, I don't take much notice

Occasionally. I stopped changing mine a while ago. Only when something really hits me. Mines not terribly interesting, it's just one of the ways I use to find my post so I know where to start reading when I come back to a thread.

I have to take the Gort thing out soon because of the *%$&# Keanu Reeves remake coming out soon.

Haha. I have lured you in. Though it hasn't been updated for a couple of weeks due to time strains.

I can't seem to decide what to do with my signatures. I'm in my weekly quote phase now, I think.

Anyway, I sometimes read them. Depends on my mood and/or whether I'm following a heated debate duel.

I logged off to view this thread with sigs/avatars and whilst I appreciate people may have carefully chosen their signatures and put in stuff that they really care about, the sensation when you're trying to read a specific thread is of being bombarded with irrelevant stuff. It's like ticking a box to get extra advertisements.

I'm the same as CTOaN; I use mine to find my posts. Handy, in that regard, having a reasonably distinctive sig (or the colours, anyway).

Don't really bother reading others, although some eventually end up being familiar to me and I can remember who the poster is by looking at their sig.

I also use mine to help me find my own posts in threads that have moved on since I last viewed mine. Just a shame that my sig is more easily noticed than my wishy-washy boring political views, eh?

I read signatures, but that's because I read everything I come across. T-shirts, bumper stickers, license plates, store signs, everything.

Luckily I read very quickly so I can generally have everything in my field of view read in a couple of seconds because if I was a slow reader I'd probably crash into things while driving.

I always read sigs. Not just new sigs, all of them, every time someone posts. Occasionally I can make myself skip it, especially if it's someone posting that I read a lot (anyone I've friended and a few others), but most of the time I can't help it. Totally OCD. It drives me nuts, because it takes me twice as long to read threads. The same weird compulsion forces me to read every word of every footnote in a book, which may be part of the reason I really resented the non-fiction I read in college.

I have sigs turned off ever since the craze of SIZE 7 FONTS IN SIGNATURES kicked off. I prefer smaller print in sigs so it looks visibly different than the post without being some eye searingly horrible color.

United Bereland or whatever the fuck his name was pretty well killed sigs for me. THERE IS NO BIBLICAL GOD.. taking up about 6 lines worth of space.

I've had sigs disabled since Day 2 on these forums. If you've got 11,872 posts, why would I be interested in seeing the same thing 11,872 times? This is especially true on other sites, where they permit, even encourage, those horrible image spam sigs.

The only time I'll view someone's sig is if it was reported for breaking rules.

On the contrary, I like sigs with small print. But if you use a fontsize much larger than the default, I will hunt you down and kill your children.

This is probably a result of having a 800x480 screen.

I "read" them once, and then I "recognize" them. I've thought about turning sigs off because most annoy me, but the way my eyes travel when reading the fora means that I don't look at user names on the left, but identify user posts by seeing the sig below, and doing otherwise is a hassle for me.

(Yes, I have exceptional abilities in text-visual recognition and this thus works for me. I'm one of those people who can tell you what font a book was written in long after the content has been forgotten, or how the paragraph I took the important information from looked - but bugger me if I knew what page it was on, or what the information was)

Heh, probably. I used to read all the signatures and follow most links, but now I only skim them if something catches my interest and I almost never follow links.
On an unrelated note, love the llama.

My favourite sigs are the ones that have some of my favourite quotes - Soheran's Soviestan quote about the invisible hand, CToaN's nephew's quote about the violin, and Turquoise Days' Trotskylvania quote about how to open Chardonnay under fire.

I use them more as a guide to which user I'm reading. I also used avatars to identify certain posters - mods - but since the introduction of these for everyone, I've become slightly confused.

The mods also now have their usernames in bold type, so I've disabled avatars --- too much visual noise --- and go with that.

Yes, as it happens. Fantastic machines, they really are. As long as you don't mind being very efficient with your screen space. But apart from that: lightwieght, durable, portable, open, etc. Great little boxen.
