NSG American Football Thread!

So American Football season has started up once again, and I am watching the Carolina Panthers beat the Indianapolis Colt in the first pre-season game! So far it's 0-14. So, talk about American Football here!

Who do ya'll think is going to the Super Bowl?

I'm still hoping my beloved Carolina Panthers will make it back.

Is the question - Who do we think will win the Superbowl?
or - Who do we want to win the Superbowl?

Answer to the first - The Cowboys or the Chargers
Answer to the second - The PACK

Well the Panthers won over the Colt, and they looked good doing it.

I see John Fox is still trying to play a close game though. I hate it that he does that.

My list of Super Bowl contenders:

Indianapolis Colts
New England Patriots
San Diego Chargers (only if LT stays healthy)
Dallas Cowboys
New York Giants

Of course a lot of other teams will be in the mix, the Jags, Steelers, and Vikings (if Tavaris Jackson doesn't suck) will all be good.

I will say that I think the AFC Champion will more than likely when as the AFC is better (on paper) again this season.

Vikings!

With Farce gone, the only real oponent in NFC North will be the bears, but we will crush them. We got T Jack, AP, the Williams Bros, Shaneco, and many other great players. We may have lost our first off season game, but its the off season. Its more trying to see what works than winning.

We also have some holes in our defense now that several of last year's players are gone, and still no QB. I hope you're right, and I'm wrong, but we've all seen Minnesota snatch defeat from the jaws of victory before (1998 NFC Championship, anyone?)

I take exception to your claim that you're watching the first preseason game. In the first preseason game, my beloved Redskins whooped up on the Colts 30-16, and looked pretty damn good doing it. And Colt Brennan, who slipped all the way to the 6th round to be drafted by the Skins, lit it the fuck UP, going 9/10 with 2 TDs-- not to mention the fact that their starting QB, Jason Campbell, went 5/5 with 1 TD. If the Hall of Fame Game can be any indicator, we're in for a big season.

In honour I started playing NFL 2007 yesterday. I am the Giants, my brother as the Pats. My brother beat the Bills 27 - 14 in the first season match.

Still my favourite memory of this game is when I played some American guys at uni. They were in shock when I, the guy who had never watched an NFL game, beat both of them. Good times.

A lot of my fellow Browns fans are pumped for the season (as am I). The talk is that this is a playoff-caliber team. Personally, I want to beat the fucking Steelers before I think about calling the Browns a playoff team.

And I only need to look at the Tribe this year to know that past performance is not indicative of future results.

Should be a good one, though. :D

I remember Tim Couch looking like Bernie Kosar in the '99 HOF game...so, no, the HOF game is not a reliable indicator. :p

It's tough to gauge how well somebody really plays in the pre-season, especially against 2nd and 3rd team opponents. Brennan can sling it, though, no doubt aboout that. The only question is if he'll be able to do it against first-team NFL defenses.

I root for Central Michigan in all instances as that's the university I attend (it's in the MAC). I root for Michigan in all instances they're not playing CMU, for MSU in all instances they're not playing UM or CMU and then I root for whoever is playing against Ohio State.

Playing good against the Colts (or anyone's) back up defense is nothing impressive. Considering how terrible he looked against Georgia in that debacle they called a bowl game I'm not convinced Colt Brennan was anything but fluke of June Jones' system. How'd Timmy Chang's NFL career turn out?

Yeah, I'm not willing to bet much on Brennan's career.

Nevertheless, that's why Campbell is the starter and Brennan's the third stringer.

I'm not sold on Campbell either, but he's better than Colt Brennan. I'm not knocking Colt for going to a small school, my own alma mater is a "small school", but I do knock him for being a system quarterback (a system that only works against lower tier teams I might add).

Re: Brennan and Hawaii,

The Hawaii system elevated Timmy Chang's play. Colt Brennan's play elevated the Hawaii system. That's the difference.

I won't make any guarantees about how Brennan's career will turn out, but based on talent alone he should have been drafted earlier than he was.

I have rather a complex system of who I root for. I root for California no matter who they're playing. I root for UCLA, Washington and Oregon if they're not playing Cal, and if they're playing each other I root for whichever one Cal has beat, or flip a coin if Cal hasn't played any of them.

I root against Stanford unless they're playing USC. I always root against USC. Except when USC was playing Texas. Then I hoped some natural disaster would happen to prevent either one from winning.

I root against any SEC team. If SEC teams are playing each other and for some unknown reason I'm watching, I root for the one that isn't favored. I do root for Texas A&M (especially against Texas), Navy, Nevada, Penn State and Hawaii.

Colt Brennan will join a long line of explosive system quartebacks who never catch on in the NFL. Texas Tech is another school with a few such quarterbacks, B.J. Symons put some truly sick numbers and I don't think he ever touched the field in the NFL.

As a Vikings fan, I was confident that Minnesota could win the NFC North even before Favre's retirement/trade. Now the ever-present threat of injury is the biggest obstacle. My prediction is that the Vikings will go 11-5.

The Lions are a non-factor, the Bears aren't much better, and while the Packers have talent, I think Rogers is a year or two away from leading that team to the playoffs.

I don't think the Vikings will win the Super Bowl, but an NFC Championship game appearance is not out of the realm of possibility, especially if we get a home playoff game or two.

Hopefully Bret's season goes better.....

I'm guessing the Jets go 6-10...and we'll see Favre retire after this season.

I hope you're right, but I'm still not confident of Jackson's consistency at QB, or our cohesiveness on defense, with all the chages recently. It's more likely we'll be about 9-7 and back into the NFC North title.

Doubt it, Favre is really a fairly small addition compared to the upgrades the Jets made earlier in the offseason. They revamped both lines, added a full block who can block, and a dynamic pass-catching tight end. I would've predicted 8-8 without Favre, allowing for a slow start due to all the new parts. With Farve, I think they can slit the first four matches, and then virtually cruise the rest of the season playing on of the easiest schedules in the NFL this year...

Also, I'm a Jets fan. And hope that Brady is still suffering the aftereffects from the superbowl.

I've got doubts about Jackson too...but I think that he'll settle into the role nicely. He doesn't have to be a Pro-Bowler...he just has to manage games effectively and not make mistakes. The running game is the focus anyways, as it should be.

I think the defense will be OK. Maybe a stumble or two early in the season, but they ought to have the issues hammered out by week six or so.

...I also noticed you're my opponenent in the NSFL in week one. *shakes fist*

*snip*

Living 30 miles from Lambeau Field, I have had exposure to a lot more coverage on the Favre issue than most.

I firmly believe that the only reason Favre is playing for anyone is because he didn't want to be forced to the bench or out of the league by the Packers front-office.

I don't think he can learn a new system fast enough to be an effective quarterback on another team, I don't think he can maintain the sort of leadership role in the locker room that made him such an important part of the Packers, I don't think that Mangini can rein him in the way McCarthy did, and I don't think that his heart is honestly in it anymore...he just wanted to go out on his own terms instead of someone else's.

Also, lets not forget that despite his ironman legacy, he's 38, and injuries can happen to any player. The Jets O-Line has to be solid this year, or you're going to see more of the "gunslinger" style of play that makes fans cringe and opposing DBs drool.
