Civilization, Sid Meyer's Style
Fall of Empire

Ok, so I've got a problem. My favorite game series of all time, Civilization, has recently taken a price-docking since Civ Revolution came out. For $30, I could get Civ 3 plus all the expansion packs. For $40, I could get 1 game of Civ 4, expansion packs not included. Since I'm on my way to college, I'm a bit strapped for cash and can't get more than one. So, civ addicts out there (I know you're there), which version is better. I've heard that Civ 4 isn't much of an improvement...
Civ 3 has always been my favorite...I just don't like 3D graphics in a game like Civilization. Not to mention it's old enough that any machine today can run it handily, even at the higher game settings.

Civ 3 + Rhyes Civ (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=111977) = one of the reasons I screwed up so bad at school
edit: also Civ 3 by freak accident tells you when IM convo's open which Civ 4 does not as I learned to my surprise when I played it (she cut-off all contact with me from that, bloody computers)
Civ 2... It's the best one...

Yeah that's what I've been told by a lot of people. Plus they said Civ 4 is pretty cartoon-ish.
Civ 4, hands down. I just spent the past hour and a half playing it :D

I find that all in all, I've come to prefer Civ 4. I recently bought the Warlords expansion, and I really like the features that one has added.

Freeciv.
Civ IV is downright idiotic, CIV III I haven't played.

Civilization 1 was the best, and the best Sid Meier game overall, besides Gettysburg, which was the best PC game ever. :)

Come, Fall, and sip some fine wine from the wineyards of Heikoku, and fresh fish from her waters - and then kindly tell me how I, JL, can be of assistance to you.
Whoever tells me who utters a variant of this and where wins the thread! :D

Civ 3 is just better than Civ4 for some reason. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's to do with the cities.
Get Civ3 and the Expansion packs, head on Civfanatics, and get yourself some mods. El Justo's scenairos are pretty awesome, and Rhys mod is indeed good.
I would choose civ 3...simply because I am most familiar with it.

I'm with you on that mate, except for me I had a bit of CivII as well and then Civ3 came out and there was no stopping me.

That's why I always make sure I log out of them before playing such games.
To answer the OPs question I will say Civ3 because w=I have been told that Civ4 isn't that much better and even a bit more cartoony which is part of the reason why I sometimes wish that I hadn't brought CivRev.

I play Civ 3 every couple of days... even after all this time. I've never yet seen a good enough reason to leap to Civ 4.

civ 3
and you can get it cheaper than $30. gamer's gate has civ 3 complete for $10 downloaded from the net.

This. Is there a reason you want to purchase something less than perfection?

The squares are better in Civ 3.

It's not exactly a Civilization, but I consider it the best game ever designed by Sid Meier.
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is a game I really recommend.

It was very good. I still lean very slightly towards Civ 3, in general... but that could just be because I no longer have my copy of Alpha C.
(Although, thinking about it, the vehicle design material might actually set that one above the rest, on it's own...)

I still think that Conquests (expansion pack for Civ 3 for those outside the know) is the best Civ game ever. So I would say get Civ3 and all the expansion packs yeah :p
I enjoyed civ IV extensively, some of the features in IV are so much handier, and they got rid of a bit of annoying things. But all in all, I'd say III is a better choice. I almost failed last Fall Semester because of it, so play wisely!

Of those two, Civ 3. I still have a massive place in my heart for Alpha Centauri, mind.

Agreed. I have no idea how much of my life that game sucked away, but it's significant. Now if I could just get it to play properly with modern video cards ...
i've played I - IV, Call to Power, Alpha Centauri.... really now, all are good but i really don't know why anyone would get anything other than IV, but then i rarely play any of the scenarios so if u do i suppose III + expansions would be for you.

This. But Civ is a great game too. I like Civ 4 with the Beyond the Sword expansion better than any of the Civ III games. But if the choice is vanilla Civ 4 and Civ III: Conquests, go with Civ III and its expansions. The reality is that Civ 2, 3, and 4 aren't upgrades- they're entirely different games. Civ 1 is fun, but it gets kinda meh after a while.

of the choices, get civ 3, since you get all the expansions with it.
i got civ 4 complete so if you can find that then you might as well get it if you can afford it, mine wasnt expensive being the price of an average game.
ive only played civ 4 though, so if you've played all of them then get the one you liked most.
i got a demo of revolutions, and i was severly let down by it, it was very cartoonish, waiting for turns got tedious very quickly, and general look of it was boring.

Civ III, and then download the Escape from Zombie Island 2 and Medieval Europe scenarios.
You could probably get Civ II really cheap... and it's better than III, in my opinion. I've never played IV.
Civ 4 and expansions. Civ 3 by itself is horrible. The AI was horrible. By the time I got 3 cities built they had 30, surrounded me, and were annexing my territory :( That and turns take forever due to everyone making over 9000 units for an attack >.>
Still say Civ IV.
For example, no more will you have to worry...will that spearman be able to kill my modern armor?
Civ I - A bit too "old skool" now, even by the standards of someone who plays senet. Tricky to get to work properly with Windows sometimes.
Civ II - Runs well on any PC.
Civ III - Runs OK on most PC's. Idea of cultural influence is major improvement to gameplay. My favourite.
Civ IV - 3D style is lame
