Oh Shi- Look Out!

So, I was driving home from work today just wanting to get home and unwind for the weekend and I almost hit a dog. Less than two minutes later I had to swerve and break hard to keep from hitting another dog and come this close to hitting another car head on. And this is in a non-residential backwoods area so where the hell did those dogs even come from? They looked rather mangy so I'd say they were strays.

Anyway, have you ever had a near miss on a stray animal? Have you ever hit one?

I'm constantly looking out for them, I've made the wackiest manoeuvres, swerving from side to side at times, but alas, I haven't yet been able to hit one. :D

I hit a bunny once. I was going about 60 miles per hour. The poor guy kinda exploded. My friends and I got out, named him "Buttercup", lit a candle that happened to be in my car, and took a picture.

We're more special than some.

You took a picture of an exploded bunny?

I don't have it on the computer...this was before the days of digital cameras. Shocking, I know.

My old car was nigh invincible. I wouldn't be too concerned for my safety if I hit anything deer-sized or smaller. Too bad Subarus are bigger than deer :(

Now, however, I'd be risking a total loss if I hit a medium-sized dog. I need what the aussies call 'roo bars' soon, I think :p

I can attest to that. Just break and hope it dodges.

I accidentally hit a puppy with my 15 ton truck the other day. Poor little guy. I was driving with night vision goggles and didn't see him until it was too late. I also hit a bird once (the stupid thing was just standing in the road, I saw it land there) at about 60mph, so there really wasn't anything left of him.

In a similar vein I'm one of the handful of people I know who hasn't hit a deer.

Once when in the car with my mom, a dog was trying to cross a pretty busy street. She stopped because the dog ran out in front of the car, and honked at it. It decided that would be a good time to run to the next lane over, where it was promptly hit by a pickup truck. (not at high speed, so I don't know if the dog was injured, or even survived)

On another note, my dad hit a freaking HORSE. Since it only hit the corner of the front of the suburban, no airbags deployed. Horse died, extensive damage to the car. There was still another horse running around too, so my parents tried to warn other drivers who were driving by (it was night).

Also, I hate pheasants. Suicidal chickens of doom!

My sister and I got divebombed by a crow once. Almost made it in the open window.

I don't drive, so I dont have any stories of accidentally hitting small creatures (unless you count mowing down children on a bycicle) but I have tails of trauma.

Imagine yourself, a child, sleeping in on a sunday morning. 9am, your mother comes in, wakes you up to tell you excitedly the story of how on her trip home she watched a deer be struck by a car, lie down dazed on the road, only to be splattered by a semi minutes later.

Also stories of the bunny run over by the tractor on the farm after being relocated to avoid such an occurance. Bunnies are stupid.

Almost had a deer run in to my car, but I hit the gas, and the little fuckers hooves fell after my car had passed.

that was shocking. I expected the bird to fly away, and it flew right into my car.

I have yet to hit a deer.

I hit an eight year old once. Thankfully he pretty much jumped in front of the car and I didn't get charged.

They usually say that untill you've run them over. Remember, with enough horse power, you can do anything you want

My car has splattered more than its fair share of birds whilst on the interstate. Damn things literally fly into the bumper..kind of hard to avoid when you're doing 70 and looking for your exit.

I have had a lorikeet fly right in through my open window. Fortunatly I was only doing 40km/h, and on a pretty quiet street. Still, nothing better than a pissed bird squarking at you whilst trying to pull over.

I swerve to hit cane toads & cats, but I haven't hit any 'real' animals yet.

I ran over two possums and an untold number of cane toads. The former were accidents thanks primarily to those things' uncanny ability to misjudge speeds and distances and suddenly jump out of bushes onto roads, the latter were on purpose.

I ran over a fox some months back and cried all the way home; it just darted under my wheel right as I came around a turn, so I didn't have even a fraction of a second to dodge.

I've also had two deer hit me, rather than the other way around. Both made big dents in my car; one broke its back while doing so and I had to call animal control to come put it down the next day. :(

I live out in the middle of nowhere, so I have to slow down, stop, or swerve for animals on a near-daily basis. Usually it's pretty easy, so long as you're paying attention.

Amazingly, despite living in an even more rural area than Poli here, the only thing I've ever hit is a dog.

Which I only hit because the dog intentionally sat in the road at night, and it was a black dog so I didn't see him till I hit him.

Made sure the owners knew and took the body home. :(
