I don't watch television...everything is a commercial.

I mute 'em too.

Maybe if they weren't set at twice the volume as the actual station programming I'd give them a listen, but they always are.

If anything, I hate the obviousness of bad commercials over anything else. Marketing is manipulation, plain and simple. People don't like being manipulated. Good manipulation should be light, subtle and subconscious. You should prefer the product being marketed "just because". Bad marketers just use strategies that were developed twenty years ago and slam them down the throats of the marketees. Which, surprise, surprise creates antipathy towards the very product being marketed.

Sadly, there are a far greater number of bad marketers than there are good ones.

you can't avoid them... they're everywhere. walk down the street, BOOM--advert/commercial. somebody was saying that in your average day, and average bloke will see no less than 150 different commercial messages, all about buying shit or owning shit.

grump aside, i usually mute the tv when the ads are on, too.

well, i was talking about my own experience. but still, even without billboards, you walk past shops and get their sales message rammed down your throat. open a magazine.

i'm talking about commercial sales/promotional messages outside the realm of paid-advertising here. commercials are just one direct way of conveying a company's sales message. i get tired of being bombarded with these all the time, but maybe its just because i'm grumpy ;)

here in finland,we have Yleisradio(loosely translated as ''public radio'')which is completely free of commercials because it's funded by the government.

Without commercials, we'd have to pay for MANY more things. So, I bear with them. Every once in a while I'll come across a commercial that involves something I like, but it's rare.

Same. But there is one ad that I would never mute (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ULHVfEFuW8).

In Canada we have the CBC, which is "funded by the government", but has commercials anyway.

BBC is "teh bomb", as it has no commercials, but i don't mind most of them, it gives a convinient break to go and get some food or drink or just take a quick walk. The only one i really hate is the comedy demon website advert, its so damn awful. But then it is countered by the honda adverts and john west salmon.

I mute them, but avoid them completely by sticking to BBC whenever possible.

They're a pain in the ass, especially on some of the minor channels where they seem to be about a third of the total broadcast. I especially hate shows/channels where the breaks don't come at any reliable frequency (like the ones that'll have a break straight after opening titles, or the ones that take 2 breaks in the first 15 minutes, etc), and the channels that continue to turn up the volume for the advertising (despite this being expressly ruled against by the ASA).

Meh, adverts. :(
