Yep another Manga/Anime thread; well this is for those who have experience with different Anime's/Manga's.

What Anime/Manga would you reccomend? Resently I watched Gantz (a very annoying but somewhat entertaining series) and I read the Manga, was fun but the further towards the end you got the less like Gantz it seemed, that and all the random naked girls gets annoying.

Well what type of Anime is it? Cause I'm more interested in the darker animes. Or the horror ones etc.

You want dark?

Try Elfen Lied, If you 'aint yet watch Ghost in the Shell, Gurren Lagann is about REALLY BIG mechs (We're talking the size of galaxies), Then there's Gilgamesh, and I'm gonna leave other suggestions open.

not horror, action. Black Lagoon is about mercenaries in like a jungle or something. Gurren Lagann is about mechs and stuff fighting each other.

Try Elfen Lied if you're looking for a quick fix. This short series bring gore and the paranormal together in a totally awesome way.

I highly recommend the Parasyte series by Hitoshi Iwaaki. There isn't an anime series to go with it and I doubt there will be one any time soon. It's a good read, though.

Mononoke is a pretty decent horror anime in the traditional Japanese fashion. Its also a trip and a half. Very dark. Pretty disturbing sometimes too.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is an EXCELLENT psychological/thriller/horror anime. Think Groundhogs Day combined with Texas Chainsaw Massacre ;)

Gurren Lagann is OK, as long as you dont watch past episode 16...or 15? I cant remember. Either way, dont watch the post-timeskip bit. It will make you hate the whole thing.

Betterman is an interesting horror/mecha combo with some decent humor in it. Its by the same people that did Gao Gai Gar, so you KNOW its going to rock ;)

Also, Gunbuster and Diebuster. Gunbuster is basically the basis of post-80's mecha (Or, at least, where the stereotypes come from) and is one of the first animes to feature fully animated breasts. Vital bit of trivia there :p

What a completely worthless generalization, forsaking an entire medium for the vague and ill-defined benefit of "improving your life".

Some of the ones mentioned I would say you actually avoid.

Elfen Lied is really a large gore fest with plenty of nudity to accompany it. Then again if you like that sort of thing it's the Anime for you.

Higurashi is a painfully repetitive horror-wanna-be. If you watch Higurashi, just quit after the first five episodes because nothing new happens after that except every one else takes a turn getting killed

If you are looking in terms of horror and dark anime one infamous one is Serial Experiments Lain. But it may just melt your brain.

Black Lagoon is about mercenaries in like a jungle or something.

Uh no. It's about a small delivery company operating off the South China Sea. Technically, that is. Said delivery company tends to be involved clashes with mercenaries, Islamic radicals, and assorted groups and individuals heavily laden with firearms and munitions, no surprise given their usually illicit and unusual cargo.

The protagonist is, as usual, a Japonski, but unlike the typical stereotype, he's an office worker who got roped into the business, and doesn't fight.

For anime:

Samurai Champloo (imagine if hip-hop was invented in Edo-period Japan...), Blood: The Last Vampire and it's follow-on series Blood +, Ghost in the Shell (the two films, the two Stand Alone Complex series, plus the series' film), Samurai 7, Afro Samurai, Naruto (fuck you guys, it's good), Cowboy Bebop...

Akira and Lone Wolf and Cub are the only manga series I've ever stuck at.

Pretty much anything by Miyazaki. Also Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&!. And the first Ghost in the Shell movie.

Make an account on anidb.net and vote on everything you watch. After you've voted enough, you can supposedly get some pretty good hints for other stuff you might like. I say supposedly, because so far it hasn't worked very well for me. It can't possibly be any worse than the shit we're telling you to watch though, and it's also a good way to keep track of what you've seen, good hints or not.

And I just remembered The Girl Who leapt Through Time, a lovely film based on an old japanese tale, IIRC.

FAKE
The Cain Saga (it's only available in manga form)
Grave of Fireflies
Kai Doh Mori
Shoujo Kakumei/Revolutionary Girl Utena (absolutely insane but amazing)
The Cat Returns
Junkers Come Here
Spirted Away
Antari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro)
Princess Mononoke
Millenium Actress
Zetsuai Bronze
Ai no Kusabi
X, X/1999
Ayashi no Ceres
Gundam Wing
Vampire Princess Miyu

Spanning a range of genres, I can recommend

Death Note
Elfen Lied
Serial Experiments Lain (trippy)

Shakugan no Shana (but skip the movie, it's mostly just a butchering of the first few episodes of the first season.)
Wolf and Spice
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Chobits (I wish my PC was that cute)
Clannad

Minami-ke (although season II wasn't quite as good as the first, imo)
Azumanga Daioh

Shakugan no Shana (but skip the movie, it's mostly just a butchering of the first few episodes of the first season.)

End of second season was a huge letdown though.

Wolf and Spice

Scores a whole bunch of points for breaking a slew of stereotypes and going with one of the most underused character types as a protagonist. Not to mention a plot that avoids most of the tropes and tricks of typical anime.

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

I suspect Kyon has British ancestry with his mastery of the art of understatement and unflappable nature.

Chobits (I wish my PC was that cute)

Until the eventual robot uprising that is. And most likely a maintenance nightmare. I'd never be able to upgrade and service my system if I had to contend with contractile polymer muscle fibers and what have you.

Azumanga Daioh

Source of incredible spoof parodies. Look up Lord of the Yen on youtube.

Ah. That's conclusions for you. I assumed you were talking about Monoke Hime. Ah well. The point still stands.

That does sound interesting, though... I might have to see if I can find some of that. :)

Its pretty trippy. One arc mostly takes place in a womans brain, involving playing back her plot to murder her husband scene-by-scene...backwards. And then fighting a demon...and...I cant explain the plot-twist without spoilers. Its crazy, though.

Artwork is unique too:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/TheLaProject/Anime%20Diet/Mononoke/Mononoke-Flowers.jpg

Has a sort of 'traditional Japanese' look. And while they were lazy with the background characters a lot of the time, at least they put a bit of effort into making them something more than blobs. Sometimes they were pretty good about it too. In the last arc all of the background characters are mannequins.

The main character himself is half the show. I suspect, as was mentioned with Kyon earlier, he might be part-British for his sheer inability to express strong emotion.
When confronted with a scene which involves a hug from a partially decomposed corpse, two giant heads screaming at him from the walls with blood pouring out of their eye-sockets and a few hundred dogs with the head of a man running around crying, his reaction consists of, "Oh."
Crazy stuff, man :P

The anime (subtitled with Japanese dialogue) is worth it if you have the time. The seiyuu that do the voices are just amazing. I love Nakago's voice.

It's just horrible in English... Miaka is far too whiney and Yui sounds too young.

In defence of the dub - my nine year old girl comments on cheesy romance movies by loudly voicing "Oh Miaka"... "Oh Tamahome" in alternately low and high registers over the top of it...

But, I agree. The sub is - as in most cases - very superior to the dub.

Well, she's nine. When there's a lot of stuff going on, she likes the dub because it's easier. For the same reason, something like "His and Her Circumstance", she'll also watch with the dub.

But then, with other stuff (like Ju-On, for example), she totally doesn't mind subs.

The Hotohori thing is a bit of a low blow. My wife has already told me she's going to leave me for Hotohori...
