Coffee Thread

I love coffee and all its derivatives, in their myriad forms and flavors.

So, let's talk about coffee.

My favorite kitchen utensils at the moment are my Bonjour! piston press and my Krups electric coffee grinder. It's a bit old, but it gets the job done.

Latest coffee additions are a Fair Trade organic French Roast (purchased from a local shops, I don't remember the brand), and a nice Sidamo from the Leelanau Coffee Roasting Company. By far one of the best cups I've ever had was a Harrar roasted by Schuil.

I need to get my hands on a moka pot. We've got a 13-cup drip coffee that's used for everyday pots ( I can't stand it, the coffee has no flavor), but I found in our basement a wonderful relic- an electric 8-cup percolator that makes some delicious coffee.

Any stories from fellow coffee lovers?

I like Arabic coffee... Only form of coffee strong enough to give me a kick anymore.

Coffee + Nicotine = Good to go in the morning.

Love coffee. I usually go with black (Dunkin Donuts is wonderful). Sometimes, I'll take a French Vanilla regular (splash of cream and sugar)

I regrettably announce that I shall never find an espresso or cappuccino that reaches my incredibly high standards.

Same here. Is odd, no?

Coffee is an aquired taste... Been drinking the stuff regularly since I was fourteen. Now I guzzle coffee like it's water. I also go through nearly a full pack of cigarettes everyday.

As I said, for me it's simple... Coffee + nicotine (from cigarettes) = Good to go in the morning.

Freshly ground coffee, please. Brew it one spoon to a cup and spoonful dividend. While I drink my coffee with milk and sugar, I always sample it black before I buy the beans.

I learned to love it when my daughter came back from Italy with an espresso habit and taught me how to make it correctly, even to the extent of buying me an espresso machine.

I don't like coffee. I like tea. Or hot chocolate. Usually I just drink chocolate milk.

Pah! Newb! Social drinker!

Get yourself a coffee still, and some 20cc syringes.

Start with the veins in your arm. The carotid is a bit too much of a rush for you newbs.

EDIT: Sweet avatar, GM. Plain symbolism, two colours, coherent to your name and agenda. Kudos.

A good cup of coffee is on of the most glorious substances I know.

I drink more of, and generally prefer a well-brewed cup of tea (a wee dash of milk, no sugar, thanks), and there's other, more powerful, substances I enjoy, but that smell of a strong dark roast.... damn!

It hits the spot.

Details, details. Promptness is the only virtue of a morning.

The full cup of coffee which you last night disdained, is sweet even if the milk has gone sour.

Ah, but you are young.

You will shove aside glowering bullies, trample grandmothers, kill puppies to consummate that craving that now, only your nose knows.

I was considering something like that -- but making a pot for a crowd is faster than making individual cups.

Then turn aside from the temptation!

Use sticky-tape, or a bulldog-clip, to secure your nostrils from the temptation. Let the song of birds and the rosy light of dawn be your welcome to the day ... not this drug which seduces with the most subtle of senses, smell.

I have a relatively cheap percolator coffee machine at home (with attached grinder), which nonetheless does make a very nice cut of coffee. I tend to buy big bags of beans from Whitards to power it, with a preference towards medium strength African (generally Ethiopia, but I had some nice Nigerian coffee I think it was at one point) or South American flavours. I tend to find too strong coffee over-powers the taste whilst too weak coffee and you may as well be drinking water.

I try to only have two cups a day however (despite being a PhD student) and usually drink tea at work (green or earl grey) because a) I'm British and it's what we do and b) we have no coffee machine at work and I refuse to drink instant.

Quite rightly too. Even the cheapest of beans, even boiled in the making of the coffee, is more righteous than any instant coffee.

Or perhaps I'm just a snob. Like you. "Oh, we English drink Earl Grey. Or green tea."

Is that really the only escape from the British class snobbery? To be a HIPPY? :p

Nah, I've been drinking green/herbals since I was a kid in an effort to avoid excessive caffine intake (personally I blame my nutritionist mother).

And of course I can't actually lay claim to being a GreatBritishTeaDrinker TM since lactose intolerance stops the use of milk, and I have been reliably informed that this is sacrilege

But on a more serious note, I think as a rule, brits tend to drink more tea than coffee, simply because that's what we grew up with... that and kettles are a lot more prevalent than coffee makers, so unless you want instant coffee, tea is usually your better option.

Arabic or Kona coffee for me. I got into Kona after vacationing in Hawaii. It really is quite good. As far as coffee chains here in the US I prefer Dunkin Donuts by far. Starbucks is only good for their frappe's and some cappuccino creations.

Espresso made in a stovetop espresso maker. Lots of raw sugar.

Black as the devil, sweet as a stolen kiss.

Fair trade, organic, shade grown, locally roasted. Of course.

If the Turkish coffee is muddy, isn't it being done wrong? The grit sinks to the bottom and leaves you with the goodness at the top.

I love Ethiopian varities. There's so much earthy flavor in them- I couldn't use one of those one-cup makers because I can't say no to more cups.

I wish I had a home espresso maker, to make shakeratos and caffe freddo. Has anyone had them?

I drink whatever coffee I can get my hands on, in order to stay awake, because I stay up too late posting bollocks on esoteric internet forums.

However, I'm all for proper coffee, as I get a cleaner hit with less hassle plus the bonus of feelings of vague sophistication.

Well, I bought that because both my roommate and I are infrequent coffee drinkers, so brewing a full pot of coffee would be a waste 00% of the time.

I liked iced, especially Thai iced coffee. I believe it has condensed milk, keeping with the formula fat + sugar + stimulant = delicious.

Hot coffee, eh. I'm not a huge fan, and it doesn't perk me up as much as iced anyway.

i hate getting threads in my coffee, the're almost as bad as hair.

coffee itself? yah, coffee is ok. i don't care much for that so called french roast proccess, makes it too acidy tasting. like acid taste in a lot of things, but coffee tastes better with its flavour at the other end of the ph spectrum.

i want coffee i can cut with a knive and eat with a fork. flavored with instant chocklet instead of sugar, and not too much or too sweet of that either.

and i don't mean, well flavored coffees are all right, but the're kind of phoney in a way. i mean the're not real varietals. the one called ethiopian mocha harrare is my flavorite favor.

and when i DO make and drink coffee, i grind the beans fresh for each pot, and keep them in the freezer the rest of the time. none of this canned crap that's stale as soon as you open it.

instant coffee crystals are ok for flavoring ice cream, as a topping to make the ice cream less too sweet.

ah, and then a coffee float, ice cream in the coffee or coffee on the ice cream, that's good too.

but i can't see, how some people have to have rag coffee all the time. that's not my thing either. coffee isn't what i start the day with, it's something for once in a while, mostly as a desert.

Same with my mum. She has a cup before she goes to bed - helps her sleep.

I don't like the stuff much myself. Too bitter (and I'm bitter enough as it is w/o adding to it) + it makes me too jittery. Can't think straight for 1/2 hour after a cup. Much prefer a glass of juice or herbal tea.
