I was having a hard time taking a pic from my computer and making it small enough to qualify as an avatar on here.

since i now know how to do it, if you are having a similar problem and can't fix it yourself, message me (preferably on the PM system here on jolt so i can have a chance to notice it) and i will help you with it.

I used the handy resize function in paint shop for mine. :)

I did the same as Ifreann. It's really simple to downsize the picture you want to use as an avatar in good old Paint.

well i did that in photoshop. i cropped to 100x100 and the jpg wouldnt resize small enough. i had to convert it to gif.

All I know is it works, and that's good enough for me.

photoshop does the job... but for others without photoshop: the gimp, paint.net, http://gui.picresize.com/picresize2/ i'm sure there are many more

edit: just play with the compression/quality when its down to the right size

Photoshop is overqualified, I'm afraid. Paint is a very simple tool to edit pictures with, that's why it works so well.

i like it too.

I just used good old fashioned paint to resize my GLaDOS.

And I just made one on Paint and saved it as a PNG :)

I wound up just changing the file extension and it went from being too big to being just the right size. :)

I changed it from png to jpeg.

The only real problem I can see with it, is that it stretches some posts. A one liner, with no sig - but with Avatars on - still takes up quite a chunk of screen space.

But then - I guess that also makes it harder to accidentally 'miss' a post in a debate... so, swings and roundabouts.

I used paint. My NS flag (not currently in use due to status as regional delegate) was cropped from a larger image, and I reduced the length and width by 50% to fit the avatar requirements. For cropping, resizing, and format changing, Paint gets the job done and it's free.

To edit photos, sometimes Photoshop is overkill if you don't happen to have a very high resolution and oversized master to work from. Use Microsoft Office Picture Manager instead (if you have Office that is - if you don't, gimp or plain old paint would do really).

You know, I consistently find myself wishing that some search engine somewhere would come up with an algorithm to search by image. I.e. uploading an image into the search box and letting it trawl the interwebs for any matches.

I hadn't seen that. I sucked it up and swallowed too. I think it's pretty fucking stupid personally to threaten deletion for a harmless joke. What could come of having "Mod" in ones title anyway? It's not like I would suddenly get mod powers. As if anyone would believe it anyway. If you try to put the word "Moderator" in, it ******'s it out, so it could never even match the actual official title. Oh well, my new title is better anyway. I can actually blow up the earth with this one.

but yeah, i guess we can forgive & forget about the ads now, cos the avatars are cool (and they gave us some of our smilies back). i always have sigs turned off (they're often too colourful and mess up the page!) but avatars add a nice extra bit of personality to the name (plus they're all in the same place/same size, so they don't make me want to go turn them off too ;))

My Avatar is actually the cover art for the Bretonnia army book for Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Specifically, it's a Knight of the Realm slashing his way through an evil horde with a magic sword.

I may try to redo it with a better resolution.

I've now redone the Avatar by resizing the original image with some better software (MS Office Picture Manager) and it looks much better.

You know, I consistently find myself wishing that some search engine somewhere would come up with an algorithm to search by image. I.e. uploading an image into the search box and letting it trawl the interwebs for any matches.

I hadn't seen that. I sucked it up and swallowed too. I think it's pretty fucking stupid personally to threaten deletion for a harmless joke. What could come of having "Mod" in ones title anyway? It's not like I would suddenly get mod powers. As if anyone would believe it anyway. If you try to put the word "Moderator" in, it ******'s it out, so it could never even match the actual official title. Oh well, my new title is better anyway. I can actually blow up the earth with this one.
To be fair (I know) he posted that when the avatar function had just been installed. By now, the real mods have bolded names and I'm pretty sure nobody knew about the "Moderator" word filter yet.

Heh. Not one time ever has my Bretonnian army fallen to a Dwarven Army. It's called Lance Formation. If you're a Dwarf, remember that phrase, you'll be screaming it as you wake from a cold sweat after a nightmare of Bretonnian Knights of the Realm running down multiple Dwarf units in a single round.

Last year, during the Nemesis Crown campaign, my Bretonnian general (Guy de Lyonesse) was named on the Games Workshop campaign report web page for Week 1 as a result of an outstanding accomplishment: 4 Dwarven miners units smashed by a unit of Knights of the Realm and a unit of Knights Errant in a single turn.

Now that I've talked an excessive amount of smack (for which I apologize if it was over the top) I would challenge you, if only you lived near Baltimore, to a friendly game ;)
