No Phone Books

In an effort at conservation, this particular hotel chain is removing phone books from their rooms.

This will probably extend to all hotels and motels. Maybe they could also get rid of the Gideon Bibles that no one reads (most people who read Bibles bring their own) and the mountain of brochures that they have on the dresser.

Is this really an effective "green" effort. If it is why not go further?

I guess, although the phone book was probably far more useful than the others you listed. Of course having one or two in the lobby would work just as well.

In the end it won't make a difference of course.

EDIT: actually it depends on how the lumber for the paper was obtained.

I can't remember the last time I opened a phonebook.

Google FTW.

If it is a big chain with many hotels and rooms, then probably not an effective way in and of itself.
But if said hotel has enough of a reputation, in can ,and likely will, force others to jump on the same bandwagon.
And they definitely should remove all the bibles.

It seems like a trivial environmental benefit that creates a minor inconvenience for guests. I wonder, do they pay for the phone books? They don't pay for the bibles, and they don't have to replace them every year except for the ones that get taken, but they might have to pay for the phone books. In which case, it's probably more about cost savings than the environment.

I would think that the biggest environmental impact hotels have is energy- and water-related -- all that laundry and cleaning that needs to be done. Maybe installing CFLs in the rooms would be a good idea toward being a "greener" hotel.

Phone books have to be continuously replaced. While the Bible is not as unchanging as many fundamentalists would lead you to believe, it does still not require annual revisions. Since the Bibles are already there, nothing is conserved by throwing them away.

Nah, we need phone books. Not all of us have computers with us wherever we go. Although having one in the lobby makes sense.

Phone books store carbon, so print more phone books as they're carbon sinks! :p

Just don't burn them for energy afterwards, instead say recycle the paper or store it somewhere. ;)

(this post is made only slightly tongue in cheek).

Given the amount of frivolous crap in papers that hotels have in them, the phone book should be the last thing to go for a "green" effort. The only reason phone books are going is that they are probably paid to put those pamphlets there and a shitload of groups with names that have the word "Family" in them somewhere would go on the news threatening to boycott the chain and protesting outside if they even thought about removing bibles from rooms.

Well, considering gideons gives the hotels the bibles (they ask apparently), i think they really don't care.

And I'd suspect the brochures left by advertisers give cash to the hotel :p
