Simpson's Springfield location

So, I've been watching "The Simpsons" nightly for awhile now, and while they've always given hints on where Springfield is, they never said it specifically. So, lets gather the brain trust of NSG to figure out where they are at!

My vote is that they're near one of the Great Lakes in the USA.

Well, it borders Nevada, Maine, Ohio and Kentucky. So that ought to narrow it down a bit. *nod*

ehh, if you read the article it's not conclusive that it's actually in Vermont.

No, Vermont's just where the movie premiere was held.

I'm curious as to why you thought that.

I always thought it was in Oregon because Groening is from there and they have the necessary geographical features like mountains, the ocean, and relative proximity to a desert.

Because of the episode I saw tonight, which had Mulder and Scully in it, and Mulder pointed The Simpson's location to the Heartland of America.

Doesn't "The Heartland" usually mean Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, places like that?

remember the episode where Lisa uncovered a plot to plow down the woods in Springfield? The one with the bribe had a map of the US and the site where the forest was, Springfield was located in Kentucky.

It's nowhere. They've given Springfield multiple locations over the course of the show, none of it is really canon.

I'm kind of partial to it being Springfield, Ohio myself. Probably because I was born less than 100 kilometres from there. :)

There is a Springfield, Missouri as well (which would be considered the "Heartland of America")

They chose Springfield because it's a common place name, so everyone could think it's in THEIR neck of the woods.

. . . . .

It's nowhere, that's kinda the point.

It initially was somewhere... but over the years it's become part of a non-existant state.

Look it up on wikipedia "Springfield's State" they give evidence that supports it being in almost every state, as well as why it cannot be in pretty much any of them.

remember the episode where Lisa uncovered a plot to plow down the woods in Springfield? The one with the bribe had a map of the US and the site where the forest was, Springfield was located in Kentucky.

But their Senator (Bob Arnold) was the Senator from South Dakota... so they should be South Dakotans too.

They are a little bit of pretty much every state.

Funny, because at the beginning of the "Behind the Laughter" episode they narrotor says they are a northern Kentucky family....

Does Kentucky have a Springfield? Also, "Behind the Laughter" is an entirely non-canon spoof episode, like Halloween episodes, none of it's information can be considered series accurate... after all, the show isn't based on it being a sitcom (as "Behind the Laughter" suggests). Additionally, merely because the family of actors is from one locale, does not mean that the setting for the show much also be in that same location.

The uncertain location of Springfield is a recurring joke in the series. Springfield is meant to represent "anytown, USA" and not be a specific real city,[7] although the producers have admitted to basing the town on various locations.[8] The name was chosen because it is a common town name in the United States;[9] there are 35 states in the United States that have at least one community with that name.[10] Despite this, many fans still believe that Springfield is located in a real state and try to follow the clues. The search for its location has been described as a "riddle wrapped in an enigma that is Springfield's location".[11] Due to the many contradictory clues, it is impossible for Springfield to exist in any set location.

Do a google video search on Simpsons Intro Ziff -- there should be four videos of the "zoom out" intro from "The Ziff Who Came to Dinner". It'll show you where springfield is.

Edit: Argh, all of the videos seem to be gone! When they weren't, however, Springfield is clearly ohio or missouri (or somewhere near them).

Neither of which have the Ocean (or possibly great lake) that Springfield is located on, and neither border Main, or Nevada (to pull two random ones from the movies).

If you read the Wikipedia article, it explains how the state is not able to actually exist in one location in the USA.

There's some website, (I believe it's linked to the Wikipedia article) which goes over all of the tedious evidence and comes to the conclusion that it can't really exist anywhere.
Ex: Homer says, "There's a NEW Mexico?" Therfore, Springfield can't be in New Mexico.
They go on vacation to California. Therefore, they probably don't live in California.
Homer says, "We're going to Hawaii!" Thay can't live in Hawaii.
It goes on for pages and pages.

It seems to me that it would be pretty pointless to give springfield a real location.

It takes away the charm of it all. Makes it all sound realistic and crap. You've got to have a little mystery. Come on guys!

It's simple really, just locate a Springfield with a perpetual tire-fire...Also, Vermont almost boarders Maine, and it has Lake Champlain (a pretty great lake in it's own right)...Also, in the episode where they go to NYC, they are clearly heading north out of the city...

It's uh, based on Oregon and Washington locations and places. Most of the last names Groening took from Portland city streets. The nuclear power plant is based on Trojan. Cosmopoles is a city in Washington state. That's what happens when the creator is from Portland.
