Pele

Closely followed by Diego Maradona, Johann Cruyff and George Best.

*Yawn*

Besides, in RL it's Diego Maradona - much as I hate to say it as an Englishman. Pele never managed to win a World Cup completely off his own back, while the little stocky hand-balling druggie wizard managed it.

In NS, of course, it's Simeone Di Bradini ;)

My vote would be Robbie Fowler. He probably isn't the world's best ever, but I liked the guy. That counts, to me. Beckham is a douchebag, Cantona is spiky and, well, French, and I was too young to see Pele in his prime.

You come into a thread on a UK-based forum where you know football means soccer, and spam it up (even misspelling at least three names in the process), and then demand respect on a term that offends you but just about nobody else?

Good luck with that.

Based on what? 2 good games at Euro 2008? He's a good player, but he hasn't got a patch on the likes of Messi, Kaka and Ronaldo (as much as I hate him)

Marco Van Basten's got to be up there with the best ever, certainly as a striker. My vote however, has to go to Mark Kinsella :)

The 'best football player' is too broad too be useful. It's like asking 'who's the best general in history.' There are too many variables. I will say that Brett Favre is probably the best Quarterback. Although I will say that Terry Bradshaw is probably the most entertaining.

Maradona good, Pele better, George Best.

Now days, I would probably have to choose between Messi and Ronaldo. Messi would probably win on terms of football merit, but I would probably prefer to have Ronaldo playing on my team.

I still don't think that there is player playing at the moment that can make the ball do the things that Ronaldhino can do. I really hope he gets his form back.

Your location reads as Boston, Mass. so I'm going to assume your refusal to acknowledge Favre is due to yet another case of Brady-blindness. Yeah, Tom Brady is good, but he's notgreat, not yet anyways. He's certainly not the Second Coming that the citizens of Beantown seem to think he is. If he manages to stick around as long as Favre has, and proves to be as double-tough, then yeah, maybe. Until then, he needs to be seen and not heard while the grown-ups are talking.

As for the scurrilous rumor floating around somewhere that 'football' somehow involves Europeans in little shorts, y'all should know not to believe everything you hear.

For me it's a toss up between Best and Maradona. Sure, Pele scored a lot, sure he did a lot, but both of those two were players who could take the ball from deep in their own half and completely change a game in 10 seconds, and do it several times a game. Pele rarely did that.

I'll say Best, because I'm obliged to, being from Belfast and all.
