Just for those of you who might remember discussing whether or not the Pakistani ISI (intelligence service) still supports the Taliban.

It still does. It seems clear that any attempt to eliminate the Taliban and any al-Qaeda who have ensconced themselves in Northern Pakistan would have to NOT involve the ISI.

The ISI would merely give their friends advanced warning.

This also complicates any scheme to "invade Waziristan in pursuit of Taliban or al-Qaeda" because the ISI would merely allow them to shelter deeper inside Pakistan. The further we pursued the Taliban or al-Q, the deeper they would flee into Pakistan, protected by the ISI.

Essentially, any effective pursuit of the Taliban or al-Q into Pakistan would involve a complete invasion of Pakistan.

Still? Like it was ever in doubt? Maybe to US...

ISI will always support taliban. It is like water being wet. It's the nature of it.

WASHINGTON — A top Central Intelligence Agency official traveled secretly to Islamabad this month to confront Pakistan’s most senior officials with new information about ties between the country’s powerful spy service and militants operating in Pakistan’s tribal areas, according to American military and intelligence officials.

The C.I.A. emissary presented evidence showing that members of the spy service had deepened their ties with some militant groups that were responsible for a surge of violence in Afghanistan, possibly including the suicide bombing this month of the Indian Embassy in Kabul, the officials said.

Which means the next logical course of action should be to put pressure on Pakistan to reign in its ISI. You know, sanctions and the like. Not that it would happen though...

Ah, now I understand! The United States has implemented economic sanctions against the United States. That explains what's happening to the economy better than any other theory I've heard...
