So, what's your favorite type of candies? I like Snickers, Lindt Truffles (hazelnut, white chocolate and peanut butter), Milky Way, Reese's, Twix, Sour Patch Kids, and Swedish Fish. I'm sure there's more I can name, but that's all I can think of so far.

I'll be boring and say Snickers. Can't beat a good Snickers. I like the dark chocolate Snickers that was out recently for a while, too.

I also like Mr. Goodbar and some of the stuff my European (well, German) relatives bring back on occasion, especially when if involves hazelnut. We don't do hazelnut in this hemisphere, but we should.

Another fave - my mother's booze balls. Grind vanilla wafers and walnuts together - heavy on the nuts, add sugar to taste. Add enough melted butter and good bourbon to hold them together, mold into balls. Roll in walnuts, cocoa powder or powdered sugar. Let sit for 12-24 hours. Serve.

Mostly sour things, plus a homemade thing my grandma makes occasionally called "Karofka", which is like toffee. Strela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strela_candy) is pretty good too..

I wouldn't call Snickers a 'junk' candy, but I'm with you in distinguishing between specialty and handmade candy and mass-produced stuff. It's a whole different thing. My favorite handmade candy is from Schmid's. Schmid was an old German guy who did all his own candymaking in a little shop down the street from me when I lived in San Clemente. He moved in right before I left town, but you couldn't forget chocolates like that. I hope he's still in business.

Reese's peanut butter cups. The big cups are even better because they have a higher fake peanut butter to chocolate ratio. All of the other creative "variations" however are bad. White chocolate Reese's? Bad. Crunchy peanut butter? Bad. Peanut butter and banana cups? WTF.

White chocolate isn't natural, though, I do agree. And peanut butter cups with real peanut butter are better, even if they're expensive and hard to find.

I'm quite fond of Ghirardelli chocolates, usually the darker kinds. I also enjoy a rather wide variety of Japanese hard candies. Of course, I couldn't do without the odd package of Haribo Gold Bears -- only the imported type, though; corn syrup seems to ruin their texture.

And where are peanut butter Snickers? I haven't seen one of those in years. All my old favorites are disappearing faster than Dulce de Leche M&Ms. :(

Mmmm... ammonium chloride...

What does that taste like, anyway?

Applications
Ammonium chloride is sold in blocks at hardware stores for use in cleaning the tip of a soldering iron and can also be included in solder as flux.

Other uses include a feed supplement for cattle, in hair shampoo, in textile printing, in the glue that bonds plywood, as an ingredient in nutritive media for yeast, in cleaning products, and as cough medicine. Its expectorant action is caused by irritative action on the bronchial mucosa. This causes the production of excess respiratory tract fluid which presumably is easier to cough up. It is also used in an oral acid loading test to diagnose distal renal tubular acidosis.

Ammonium chloride is used in snow treatment, namely on ski slopes at temperatures above 0 °C, to harden the snow and slow its melting.

In several countries sal ammoniac is used to spice up liquorice-type dark candies (Finland's salmiakki, Sweden's lakrisal, the Netherlands' zoute drop and the Danish Dracula Piller are popular examples), and as a flavoring for vodkas.

Ammonium chloride is used as an expectorant, diuretic and systemic acidifying agent. It is used in the treatment of severe metabolic alkalosis, to maintain the urine at an acid pH in the treatment of some urinary-tract disorders or in forced acid diuresis.

Ammonium salts are an irritant to the gastric mucosa and may induce nausea and vomiting

Ammonium Chloride is by far the best flavouring to a candy (and liquor for that matter)

What it tastes like is hard to describe...Perhaps closest you can get is indeed combining salt with liquorice as Wiki suggests (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmiakki) but that's not really even half the truth. ;)

It's an aquired taste though.
