Ok, fine. You got me, I'm just lazy. I live near the very end of Moggill Road, so going to the city takes me ages and I can get pretty much anything I want from Indooroopilly anyways, so I'm not in the city often.

But yeah, it's central so everyone should be able to get there relatively easily.

Sounds good. Mondays would suit me, or Tuesdays will be okay in a few weeks (when hockey season finally finishes)

Atleast west end it would be a matter for NL to just bus it to Toowong and catch a shittycat to West end. I live only about 5 mins walk from Guyatt park so can just jump on it.

I have only been out to west end once though, and was already rather drunk by the time we got there so don't really remember where anything is. :$

Sun: Work all day.

Lol. Well there's always dying from a horny-induced heart attack or dying in an avalanche. I certainly wouldn't choose the latter. Anyway, if no one else can make it, I don't care. Regatta it is. I'll drink by myself if I have to.

Yeah...

I might be able to do 13th, but will be down the coast that day (I think at this stage) so I am not sure how tired I will be... It would be a pretty good night to go out however

the 16th, I might be able to do. I finish work at 7 at Southbank, so we could meet up at the Plough Inn or somewhere perhaps? I am however planning on going up to Rainbow the next morning at 6 so It would be cut short.

Keep safe, don't do drergs, get a drinks buddy, make sure your mobile's charged, take a bit of change, don't throw up in the taxi.

I always say that to my kids before they go out. Can't have these young folk acting irresponsibly, never would have happened in my day.

But I won't add the bit about, "If you can't get a taxi, don't hitch and don't walk, I'll come and get you whatever time it is." Forget it, make your own ways home.

(BTW, raise a glass for me for my birthday on Saturday, will yer? It's one with a zero in it, I'll need all the psychic support I can get.)

Most of the really great drunken experiences of my life have involved me (not doing drugs) but drinking half a sack of good, losing my pants (which had my money, phone and keys in them) and trying to convince the taxi driver to take me (in my vomit stained shirt) down to the Redlands for free by speaking with a thick fake indian accent.

But I won't add the bit about, "If you can't get a taxi, don't hitch and don't walk, I'll come and get you whatever time it is." A TEENAGER was killed and tens of thousands of homes remain without power after the worst storms in Queensland in over 10 years.

In yesterday's storm tragedy, police said the 19-year-old victim and a 20-year-old friend were taking photographs in a drain behind the Westfield Chermside shopping centre in Brisbane's inner north when they were overwhelmed by flash flooding.

Dan Broughton rushed from his nearby apartment when he heard one of the men shouting for help.

"He was in the drain, holding on to the pipes. He couldn't get up, so we grabbed a rope and dragged him over," Mr Broughton said.

"Originally he said his mate's still out there, to try and find his mate, so we ran down and found where the pipes came out but couldn't hear anything."

Fire officers pulled the man from several metres of water, but the body of the second man was later found by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service's Swiftwater rescue team.

There were so many ambulances and fire trucks and police cars and the street was closed off... and the band in the hall was still playing and there was just silence. There was no screaming or anything and you couldn't tell was what going on. All they'd say was that there had been a fatality. Just two arty young guys taking photos. I'm so so devestated.

This somehow happens every time there's a big storm. Either it's kids getting swept into the drains, or people actually climb in there (and really, photos or not, that just doesn't sound like a good idea to me). Maybe the things should be secured or covered better.

maybe everytime there is a storm the police should force people to stay inside their home to reduce the risk!

Well, the alternative is that people pay more attention and appreciate that a solid wall of water and lightning coming towards them is actually dangerous.

In the picture gallery from that Courier Mail link there are a few pictures of the rescue operations. There is one shot that shows a piece of the drain with a big, sturdy grate over it. But then there is another that seems to be an entrance, where there is no protection. You can't always help it if people actually want to climb in there, because they'll find ways to do it. But I don't see why there have to be any big stormwater drains that are freely accessible without some sort of maintenance key.
BunnySaurus Bugsii
17-11-2008, 02:09
Right, NL. The grating actually makes it more dangerous if there's a gap in it -- stops you getting back out if the water rises to it.

Around Sydney most drains have a warning sign. Gratings are expensive (have to be vandal-proof and galvanized) but they're gradually being installed in the more dangerous places.
Amor Pulchritudo
17-11-2008, 06:34
Most of the drains are grated but it's not like the normal brown metal grating that is very close together. The grates have huge gaps between them and I think it would be very easy for a child or someone thin to get in to the drains. They're open and visible. It's not like they're hidden or have any kind of warning. It looks horrible too, but that's not the issue. Seriously, some of the drains in this suburb even have graffitti INSIDE them.

We are lucky - we are on a hill. Our downstairs had it's usual torrent of water pour through and now it's a big mud puddle, but we are used to that now (more of an annoyance than a 'oh shit we are all going to die' kind of thing). It all drained fairly quick. My brother just across the road apparently had a foot of water under his house though :O

Tips for insurance claims (the Hunter went through this last year):

Never call it a flood in official communications. It was a storm, geddit, and what covered your floors was storm water, not flood water. Some insurance companies may try to welch on claims if you call it a flood. They will point to clauses about not covering flood-prone areas.

Keep every receipt for everything you replace, no matter how minor. Take photos of everything that got wet, even if it's unrecognisable.

If they try to brush you off, go public. The ABC's comments site or TV stations' and newspapers' Tell Us Your Story sites are a good place to start. One of the Hunter companies backed off the "it was a flood, not a storm" angle after bad publicity.

And take cover, you'll be crawling with politicians soon if they're not swarming already.

Wasn't too bad. I was at a friends' house, and going back at 1am or so the streets were all rivers. There was one intersection that's basically at the bottom of a valley, so it was a lake and I was seriously wondering whether my car could get through it, but I ended up being lucky.

Other than that, water coming into the garage and the pizza delivery car got shut down by water getting into electrical bits. Not too bad really.
