Catalytic events basically change your life in a significant way. One of the recent ones was me not getting to be a student teacher, so that basically changed the way my life was going to come out after college.

So what Catalytic events happened in your life?

I just learned that I won't be able to go to Valley Forge the year after I graduate cus my AIT will take too long. Which pretty much fucks my plans in the ass with a golden dildo.

What is AIT, and is Valley Forge another college or town?

Well I now know that in my final year of my degree I cannot get a work placement because the module I needed to take to qualify for it filled up before I could get a chance to sign up. I'm hoping I can find some loop hole in that rule.

after more than a week of serious and unknown illness at school,
It was later found I was not only a diabetic but that I was close to dying.
( my family is full of medical people and on one caught it )
it's a funny story now, even if it sucks.

AIT=Advanced Individual Training. In my case, Infantry School.
Valley Forge=Valley Forge Military College, which has an Early Commissioning Program (become an officer in two years instead of the regular four).
Golden Dildo=Aw, damn, you didn't ask me to explain that one...

Based off of Ron Jeremy (accurate to within the nanonmeter) and cast in pure, 24 carrot gold.

nah...if I've learned anything, its that when the government wants to screw you, they do it in style.

And a good thing for you, maybe. Me? I won't be able to sit down for a month...

yeah but you dont know where this will lead you. it might be the disaster you think it is, it might lead you to a better path.

as i recall wilgrove was extremely angry when the student teaching thing fell through (a completely justified anger) but now he is on a better path.

I understand in theory...but this path practically guaruntees that I will ship out to Iraq in 2011. So while it might be better, I sure as hell can't see it right now. =/

About 2 months ago now I had a nasty motorcycle wreck, and pretty much ruined my ankle. I don't have insurance (self employed) mind you, but I went to the ER anyway because I figured I broke it. They said I only have a severe sprain, and I'll be fine in 3 weeks. Well, 3 weeks came and went, so I went to the local physician, he hooked me up with a really cheap MRI. Well I got what I paid for, the doctor said it's still a severe sprain but I may need surgery in a few weeks if pain still persists which tells me that he doesn't know what he's talking about because I would think he'd know right away if I needed surgery.

Anyway, now they want 1500 dollars up front for the MRI and I've been out of work for 2 months, savings are gone, blahblahblah.

while i am hoping that we will have a minimal presence in iraq by then if you want to make the military your career you will need combat experience to rise high in the ranks.

Oh, I know that. Don't misunderstand me, I know perfectly well what I am getting into. The plan, however, was for me to be an officer by the time I saw combat. Now, that ain't happening. At least it isn't likely to happen-you never know.

And while yes, I absolutely hope for the same thing you do, I feel like it won't happen.

At the time it didn't seem too catalytic, but now... The event was that when I was in second grade, a friend of my teacher's came by after coming home from teaching English in Japan. She spent the day showing us pictures of her life in Japan, the Japanese school she taught at, and taught us how to count to 10 in Japanese and fold some origami. That one little lesson started a life long interest in Japan that led to various choices on my part and ended with me living and working in Japan and married to a Japanese woman.

But, like I said, at the time it didn't seem too spectacular.

Why didn't you get to be a student teacher? Just curious since I just got my credential this year.

Speech impediment. The school screwed me over with a BA. Yes I am still bitter about that even though I graduated in 2006.

Catalytic event? I'd say stumbling upon this site back in December of '03. I would have never gotten into online nation RPs and the such. Worldview would be very different.

When I got my new iPhone, I realized that I really am cooler than everyone who doesn't own one.

I go one better, I have the black version of the Macbook - this means I can go into any cafe/coffeehouse where people proudly have their white Macbooks and instantly make them feel inferior.

I make people who use Apple feel less cool.

I also do not buy the iPhone purely because I have the laptop and a Shuffle and don't want to be a complete Macwhore.

This line of thinking impresses people.

I prefer hanging out with shallow people,

Summer of 1977, right after I graduated from high school. Friend of mine that had ashtma had a severe asthma attack, and I had no idea what to do to help him, other than calling 911. He died due to respiratory failure. I felt like crap, had no idea what to do to help him that night.

Joined the volunteer rescue squad a few months after that incident, have worked ems, police, fire and 911 since then. One thing is for sure. If I call 911 at my house, it will be for some major crap that I can't handle by myself.
