i was thinking of one set in the distant future when we are all chinese. in the inevitable collapse of one dynasty and before the rise of a new one, the poor downtrodden despised european minority decide to stage a new french revolution--locally only of course.

time capsules put in to rescue civilization set to open at specific times when the creator thought they would be needed?

not the most original of ideas, but

Not to put a damper on it, but reading too much can seriously stifle your urge to write. The "Ah, it's been done better" syndrome, if you will.

The only decent way I can see to fight this is to just stop thinking about it and write like mad. Write every day. Even if you throw 19 of them away, write 20 pages a day.

I'm sure Vernor Vinge wasn't put of much by the thought that his Realtime stories were right on the pattern of Leigh Brackett and Isaac Asimov, and even so, he went ahead and wrote, and his stories stand on their own fairly well.

'Tis possible. I do read a lot, and write very little. (On the other hand, I listen to a lot of music and still play it, even though I know I'll never be as good as, say, Mstislav Rostropovich -- but I suppose that's different.)

I've been variously considering that, or that they are discovered by accident, either before or after the time when they are intended to be opened.

I considered following the events over the course of many generations, and thus not having a single protagonist (unless humanity itself counts). Alternately, I considered establishing the existence of a secret bunker where ancient scientists had hooked themselves up to life support systems to keep an eye on the world, as it were, until the effects of the catastrophe had ceased to be felt; thus, all of the events in the novel would be witnessed by one such observer, making him or her the main character (continuing the Asimov analogue, a sort of Hari Seldon standin).

Of course, I never got far enough to decide which approach I wanted to take, but I'm leaning towards the first way.

The beuty of II is you can choose which types of nations are allowed to post and which ones aren't.

For example MT only means modern nations only, PMT means post modern (pre-future) nations only, FT only means futuristic nations only ect ect. You can also put n00bs only so that only new nations fight you. Or you can ask the others to go easy on you since its a first time.

I was considering Ganymede or Callisto. Io's too volatile, and Europa's ice covering doesn't strike me as the best surface to try to build a base on. One of these days, I may try to start an RP around space colonization.
