The evidence is incontrovertible.

I think this is more evidence that China is ruled by 12 year old girls than that China rules the world.

Rule 34 stops for nobody.
I thought the classic Chinese elements were Earth, Water, Fire, Wood, and Metal, not Wind...

The panda is awesome. I'm not sure why the little boy's head is on fire, but... well. Look back at other recent Olympic icons. The only way is up. Head on fire, or no.
Awesome-coated awesome with a soft awesome-y centre, I thought.

They're representing elements. The Fire kid represents--obviously--Fire, the fishy one Water, the Panda is Wood, the running one is Earth, and the last one is apparently Wind, which as I noted before doesn't exactly jive with the others, since the fifth Chinese element is Metal.

I was trying to work out exactly was going on - I was trying to remember the significance of colours in chinese culture... blue for memory, green for truth, etc? Something like that...
I think the five elemental interpretations are being altered - if you go to the official website, it talks about this being a message of peace and friendship to all the children of the world - I think this is (possibly) a more cosmopolitan version of the elements - more in tune with global thought. Maybe?
Maybe. That certainly would make sense.

Whichever. They are so cute.
I remember the Atlanta Olympics and their weird ugly blobby thing. China kicks ass at hosting Olympics. Olympicses. Olympa?

Uh, it's cause he's representative of the Olympic Flame that's lit at the Games. The blue one appears to be tuned to everything aquatic, the green one for all things airborne, the panda rolled in representing all team/ball sports, and the yellow antelope thingy looks like it was land/racing sports.
They're also the colors of the five olympic rings, which I'm told represent the "five" continents (+ Eurasia, - Antarctica), but with the colors not part of any specific representation. However, something in my memory tells me that Blue = Eurasia; Yellow = Australia; Red = North America; Green = South America; and Black = Africa...no idea where I heard that.

It's cute, and it's kinda funny... but... did you have to be there?

It's one of the mascots, they were each doing an Olympic sport but the one holding a gun was pointing to the passers by - it amused us in thinking this is a remainder of what might happen if people get out of line.

Each event has as its emblem one of the five characters, according to which of five characteristics of human athleticism is represented (as best as they can assess, at any rate). The panda represents target shooting.

Ooooh.
I'm dumb. Here I was thinking elements and tying into Chinese culture. I should've known.
...
ESPECIALLY since the Chinese government is still avowedly atheistic and frowns quite heavily on any religious symbolism. http://generalitemafia.ipbfree.com/uploads/ipbfree.com/generalitemafia/emo-_facepalm__by_Chimpantalones.gif

Interesting I heard that the five colours are used because every country has at least one of those colours on its flag, and thus represents all countries coming together.

That seems plausible. I wasn't looking for that explanation on the Wiki page, but it's probably there. It makes sense.
They're like Chinese Care Bears! I can completely see vendors on the street selling these, and making a lot of money.
