I don't mind ads when they're at the bottom of the screen or on the upper right side, but when they're in the middle of the thread....

Or adblock it! I don't normally use adblock, but there is a limit to how much ad annoyance I'll put up with, and this is rapidly nearing my limit!

No, they are very annoying in the middle of the thread. Nothing wrong with them at the top of the page.

Well, it's more likely you'll click them in the middle of the thread, adding revenue to this forum.

Actually I am less likely - the more people get in my face with advertising the less likely I am to buy from them. In this case I am never ever going to click on one of these adverts in the middle of the page.

It seems to be part of an increasing trend across the internet to make advertising more intrusive and less avoidable. Obviously it's because companies want to increase visibility. But personally I feel in the end it's counter-productive as it just makes consumers more pissed off with them.

Clicking it 50 times or so will bother them, there's tracking fees with every click and I'm not sure these sorts of ads aren't pay-per-click as well.

When they notice enormous amounts of non-conversion clicks coming from here, they might take it off the affiliate list.

I've never quite known as to the criminal status of this, if I was a rival business I'm sure I could be done but I'm not entirely sure about individuals.

Just in case, I absolutely do not recommend people click on this ads each time they enter a thread in order to conduct this experiment as part of a mass show of disapproval.

we've had ads in the top right corner for over a year. These new ads are just a way for the owners of the site to cash in at the expense of our dignity. I am accusing Max Berry of selling out, thats right, damn pig.

Especially the ones strategically placed right under the OP so one can't escape them. However, currently I only see a blank space titled "Sponsored Links" - is it my ad-blocker software or did something actually change? (I saw the actual ads yesterday, or I wouldn't ask...)

Yes I find them annoying, but what I find annoying is not the add it is the big white patch I see because there is no ad there. Does anyone else see that or can you see ads?

Adblock plus and NoScript. I hadn't known there were ads until this thread.

Seriously, they advertise stuff on here? What the fuck?

This post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13859852&postcount=6) in Technical gives the current position.

We've been asked to track any such inappropriate ads and bring them to the attention of Jolt. They're using a new service provider, and my understanding of the arrangement is that we're using COPPA compliance and the UK's BBFC 12A standard for both ads and forum participation. This is fairly similar to the MPAA PG 13 rules for movie rating that NS mods have been using for some time.

So, if you spot an ad that doesn't appear appropriate, make a note of it here. If you're willing, click the link and post the target URL. We'll bring it to the attention of the Jolt Admins (who are much more approachable* now under the OMAC model).

* No, that approachability doesn't mean that we have enough influence to ask them to abandon their revenue model and remove the ads, so don't ask.

You'll note the "make a note of it here" refers to that thread, in Technical, not this one.

I use the same. I haven't seen any ads.

Those of you who are seeing ads need to get Firefox 3, Adblock and NoScript.

You'll find your experience much more satisfying.

I use the built in "block content" feature on Opera. I block any annoying ads. I'd never click on those anyway.

I think I'm going to write a greasemonkey script to remove them from my view. I'm ok with ads, but only if they don't annoy me. And this is annoying.

NoScript is keeping the ads from being annoying, bu I'd rather see them on the top of the screen than right in the middle of a debate.

I like the ads, they just don't go far enough! I demand advertisements be placed on the insides of my eyelids, so they fill my every waking and sleeping moment with clever animations and shameless whoring out of shitty internet companies trying too late to cash in on the dot com bubble!

Meh. Ads are a sign that the owners of the forum are either:

*Poor

*Just assholes looking to make a profit

*Completely nuts

*Nerds who wanted to prove they could do it
