Batman star Christian Bale has been arrested by detectives investigating claims he assaulted two family members.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said a 34-year-old man had been arrested in connection with an allegation of assault, and remained in custody.

Mr Bale is alleged to have lashed out at his mother and sister in his suite at London's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday.

The Welsh-born actor stars in the title role in the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight.

"A 34-year-old man attended a police station in central London by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault - he currently remains in custody," a police spokesman said.

The Hollywood star attended the European premiere of The Dark Knight last night in London's Leicester Square.

He had been due to meet with radio journalists at the Dorchester Hotel to promote the film on Tuesday afternoon.

You think he'd assault his family members for the publicity? Or perhaps get them to say he'd hit them? Interesting theory...

No, but you know the news these days.

BTW, on the subject of news, I was reading some WWII history, and the author was making comparisons between the daily unit reports of combat units, the communiques released by higher commands, and the reporting in various magazines. Combat unit records were compared against the unit records kept by the enemy units they were fighting.

When you have two witnesses (one unit fighting another, both keeping records), they keep very separate but very accurate (they match) records. Higher command tends to distort things more or less (MacArthur being the worst).

But Time Magazine and the BBC apparently hold the record for the most inaccurate reporting, when compared to the actual witnesses to the event.

So I don't think that inaccurate or crappy news is anything new. After all, the BBC said during the invasion of Sicily that Patton and his men were "strolling through the Sicilian countryside, eating melons and drinking wine".

When in actuality, he took Messina when Montgomery couldn't.

If the "family members" were kids then it matters. If he just got into a knock down drag out with father, brother, or other adult family it doesn't matter. Also those family members are pansies for pressing charges.

*snip*

Your anecdotes truly are entertaining asides, as another aside, systemic abuse such as those photo'd so lovingly at Abu Ghraib were known by both the media and the army long before they came to light.

Carlotta Gall of the NY Times wrote a story as early as 2003 but the NY Times would not run it. The senior editors 'could not get their head around it' as it did not fit the narrative of American forces of good.

Others tried to write it as well, even when CBS showed the pictures in 2004 coverage was slow. It all changed when?

George Bush denounced them, suddenly the US media felt it was safe to dent the overwhelming patriotism that utterly skewed, if not repressed, honest reporting.

Funny thing media, I can understand how they're pressured by blind patriotism and willingly suspended belief. Happens in every country.

Anyway, this is all hijacking the thread.

From what I understand he was arrested after his mother and sister issued a "complaint" about him. It sounds to me like you can be arrested for a lot less over there than in the States.

So you (or celebrity you) wouldn't mind being publicised as a paedophile or rapist?

You'd be infamous rather than famous. If that's the goal of a celebrity, then I can understand; but I imagine most celebs want to be famous for good things, not bad.

Surely Michael Jackson would prefer returning to his celebrity status before all the recent publicity surrounding his trial(s).

He certainly has his history of drinking and depression, but he's got no record, no scandals like this I've ever seen, he went in willingly and no charges were pressed, and his sister later said it was a "family matter". Sounds to me like a heated argument where someone may have jumped the gun and either tried to cool the situation down by involving the police or put a scare in him.
