Has anyone played it? I've seen the ad at the top of the page several times and I decided to check it out. It looks kind of cool, but at the same time it seems like it could really be lacking.

I briefly tried it a long time ago. At the time, there wasn't really much, nor were there many players to interact with, but they've probably added stuff since then.
But, one thing to keep in mind, if it is anything like it used to be, it takes a fairly long time to do anything, and, if you don't keep training your skills, there is skill decay.

Agreed. I wish I could just try it out for free without paying the subscription price (I know I'm stingy).
