Band ideas?

Alright so I just made a new band and we're going to rehearse on Thursday, but we don't have a name yet. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for a name and/or for a unique look (for example, Slipknot wears those masks). Any help you can give would be great.
Don't even try. That's my advice.

Absense of Cheddar. Depending on how many members are in your band, you should each paint a different sector of your body bright green.

Go all acoustic and then take up the name Acousticonglomerate, which I think is an awesome name for a band, though no one has agreed with me, yet.

I won't give you any cool ideas, because they are MINE. However, since I've been in a few bands, I'll give you some tips.
Think about a short name, something that is unlikely to be shortened. Your name will get shortened if you ever play a venue with a marquee, it will also get misspelled, due to lack of those really (apparently) expensive plastic letters.
Remember that if you have shirts/CD covers, etc. your name should be able to fit on them without being cumbersome.
It shouldn't remind you of another band, it shouldn't be too trendy, and it should have a way for your fans to identify should you eventually get a following. (i.e. "dead-heads")
Remember not to pick anything obscene, it might cut down on your press.

1 - Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2 - Go to Random quotations: http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
If you want to do this again, you'll hit refresh to generate new quotes, because clicking the quotes link again will just give you the same quotes over and over again.
3 - Go to flickr's "explore the last seven days" http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
Put it all together, that's your debut album.

Abandon any original ideas of your own and become a homestarrunner.com tribute act - that way you can do Limozeen, Tranchula and Sloshy :D
Stay away from plays on words - they will be most likely misspelled, in the opening of your first clip hitting the national TV no less :D
Short names are best but if you are stuck, try long ones with fairly recognizable words in them - a la Alvin and the Chipmunks.
I wouldn't chose names that describe how you founded the band - if you wish to go for that "retro" look just don't use the family or species names for primitive arthropods :D
Safest bets would look like "Jane Kill and the Murder Band" or "Johnny Bass and the Drum Kits" ;)

Well we can't give you a name without knowing the genre. I've worked with a ton of bands from all genres and I tell you now it's a tough life. You're going to have to really work at it if you want to make any kind of success which will more than likely take years. Some tips:
Never pay to play a gig. If you find a venue and the owner wants you to pay them to play at their club move on. They should be paying you.
Start by promoting yourself. Leave a few posters or so around venues you know are frequented often. This will usually generate a lot of interest.
Keep your finances in check. Very Important. When paid for performing I find it best that you put 20% of that money into some kind of keep safe. This way you have emergency money if you ever need it.
When performing interact with the audience. Don't just go from song to song instead talk to the people who paid to come see you. If there is no interaction then you'll soon get a reputation of ignoring your fans which can kill any band off instantly.
They're just a few tips that I've noticed that bands who I worked with implemented, all small bands. One of the first of these bands, after following advice similar to this just released their debut album which has sold out in one of the big music stores.

Dumb Ideologies
21-07-2008, 17:00
Names of bands are best if they fit well with the type of music and the personalities of the band. Its hard to propose a name for a band for a group of people I don't know. For instance, when I was at school, I tried to persuade some of the other anti-social geeks to form a grindcore band with me, called "Fresh Air Causes Cancer", as a reference to our reputation for being losers who didn't go out much. Unfortunately, they all liked classical music, so weren't very interested in the idea of making unpleasant noise. Fools. Anyway, yeh, not knowing you or your intended music style too well, hard to make a recommendation it is.

Ummmm yeah then I can see why you would need a gimmik, rather than let the music speak for itself!
Bwahahaha, hey don't take that to heart, choices and all that!
What I do to find titles for my writting is just a word or a line from whatever it is I have written, perhaps that helps, perhaps not.
