String or Standard?
I like String...it's very elegant. But Standard is more widely believed so what can you do.
Everyone loves theoretical Quantum Mechanical theories.

String!
I think I'd go with standard. I can't really say I find strings elegant. And to be honest you can't see much of 'm in the first place. It's just not practical; and they don't really seem to cover what matter.
It's hard to even call string theory science; it hasn't yielded any testable consequences yet. At least standard quantum mechanics works; you can use it.

Provide something more tangible than, "if we assume there's loads of other dimensions, our maths fits!"

I prefer string, because it's been very well marketed and I, unfortunately, never ended up studying physics. *nod*

String has some strong evidence mathematically.

String has some strong evidence mathematically.
And what would that be?
And what would that be?
Don't ask me. I'm an English major.
String has some strong evidence mathematically.Err, that doesn't really work. I mean, it can be mathematically elegant, beautiful even; but that says absolutely nothing about it's validity as a physical theory. I can't even really imagine what "mathematical evidence" should mean; maths isn't an empirical science, it isn't evidence-based.

It's my understanding that, of all the varied string theories out there (for there are so many), all are as yet only highly theoretical, and only make sense once we make a number of highly controversial assumptions.
For example most, if not all, of the string theories only 'work' once they assume there are multiple dimensions; upwards of ten!

I like the way you think.

13, actually. So far.
In the 9th dimension the electromagnetic force and the weak nuclear force are the same thing.

I only believe what the Holy and Literal Bible tells me. So I favor string.

"A brave little theory. And actually quite coherent for a system of five or seven dimensions -- if only we lived in one."
-- Academician Prokhor Zakharov, "Now We Are Alone" :D
Whichever theory gets me:
1) a practical time travel machine that fits in your home
2) a practical transporter (a la Star Trek) that fits in your home
3) a practical warp drive (or jump drive) that allows easy interstellar travel
4) a practical antigravity device that allows for simple flying cars
5) a practical, pistol-sized disintegrator

I believe you're looking for the Warner Brothers Theory. It has all the things you're looking for, including the disintegrator.
