Snack Time!

Right now I'm having cottage cheese with pepper for a bedtime snack.

I usually have about two snacks per day, one at some point in between lunch and dinner and one some time before I go to sleep.

This might be because I don't eat much at meals, I can usually only manage to eat a snack-sized portion of it. Sometimes I can eat all of the meal, but not always. I can't ever seem to finish my bowl of cereal (even if I reduce the amount, it still doesn't seem to get done), I can never finish a bowl of oatmeal, and when mom is putting food on my plate I always get intimidated by how much food is on there (she's reduced it for me lately but it still seems intimidating).

Once I stop being hungry I completely forget that the food is sitting there. I'm wondering if it might just be a better strategy for me to eat like 4 or 5 snack meals instead of going for 3 meals a day that I can't finish.

Also, my family loves two-bite brownies. They are delicious, my whole family eats them and goes through them like crazy. I end up eating like 10 in a week.

How many snacks do you eat each day? What types of snacks do you like to eat?

I usually don't snack. If I get hungry, I might have some popcorn or a yogurt. But usually not.

I enjoy Craisins. They're dried cranberries, with enough sugar to protect me from the evil antioxidants or whatever is inside the actual fruit.

It depends. Normally, it'll be multiple times a day, as I really don't keep count. Sometimes, though snacks can become a meal, such as when I go for a pint of Haagen-Dazs and wind up eating the whole damn thing.

I've heard that 4-6 small meals a day is healthier than 3 big meals.

Cottage cheese with course ground pepper is very good. It's also good mixed with diced fresh tomatoes, or with curry powder or salsa.

Sunflower seeds, bananas (great burp fuel), granola, sweet maui onion chips, on occasion yogurt, a small amount of peanut butter, about .7 oz dark chocolate, and when i can, this kickass lightly-mustarded hummus i get every now&again from a local greek restaurant.
Not every day, of course ... i usually just drink during the day (2 gallons of water displacement or else, doctors' orders)

2 gallons? WTF? That's 7.5 liters; that's pretty much impossible! When I'm at uni, I try to average one fill of my .5 liter bottle per seminar (=2 hours), so I'll get 3 liters done on a busy day, and that's already an enormous lot. Do you work/post from a laptop in a loo, or something? Do you have any special sort of condition that requires this?

As for snacks, I try to limit myself to fruit (I usually make myself at least one smoothie per day; long live my newly purchased blender!) or salad-y things, but often enough I end up eating some sort of bread or roll thing or a little hot snack (when at uni) or preparing a little meal (like, say, a bowl of rice) or preferably mooching some off my flatmates who may be cooking something (when I'm at home).

Thinking about this past week, I realized that I eat less than I usually eat.

Maybe it's because I sleep through all of the meals anymore..

A lot of my snacks are soft tortilla shells with a small filling, fried in olive oil. Usually two or three different kinds of cheese.

That's what I heard, too.

I haven't tried it with any of those other than the pepper, but I love it with pepper. My mom does, too, but my brothers look at us like we're crazy when we put it on. But it is good. *nods*

I LURRRVE putting ham and pepperoni in between hamburger buns. Nothing else, just some ham and pepperoni, and two hamburger buns. Especially good for breakfast, a side for lunch, and awesome as a snack!

you have a small stomach and need to work on eating as much as you can at each sitting to stretch your appetite

I snack every hour of so usually on peanuts, cashews or (if its a bad day) chocolate

Why on Earth would she want to do that? So she can regularly overeat like the rest of us and have a harder time not growing fat? She's to count herself lucky that she's got a natural way of keeping her portions under control, and doesn't have to fight her appetite!

From what she's said in this thread, she eats five times a day (three meals plus two snacks), which is an absolutely healthy amount. Now, if she could only eat as little in one sitting that she'd need, say, ten meals to get her calories/nutrition intake, I'd worry too, but this..?

I like to make ramen noodles with whatever vegetables I have left over thrown in. Onions, mushrooms, cabbage, carrots, corn, e.t.c. Beans don't work very well though.

My bold above. This is how primates in the wild eat. Since we are primates, it is probably as natural (if not more so) than the "3 squares" we've been culturally indoctinated to require.

Huh? My response or the fact we don't consider emptying your plate completely to be impolite?

yes because having a small stomach is generally a problem

You still failed to explain why.

Saying "Finishing off all that is on your plate is impolite" is not an explanation for "Having a small stomach is a problem", in fact, it could be used to argue the contrary, i.e. that having a small stomach is great (because you'd never be tempted to finish a whole portion on a plate).

I have found out that I feel much better when I keep my blood sugar as even as possible. I eat 6 small snack meals a day.

I usually have cereal for breakast and then some fruit for a snack, then a wrap at lunch, then some nuts and yogurt for a snack, then dinner, and then sometime around 8 another snack, usually like some trail mix or some veggies.

I just had a delicious mango as a snack. It was amazing.

For me, it really goes up and down depending on my mood... I'm not picky, so I'll eat just about anything for a snack, and I don't have anything too often or regularly. I don't have any kind of snack routine... I just eat snacks when I'm hungry and they're available.

My diet is restricted to a medical condition. I usually snack on a lot of fruits and special protien shakes. But I usually have to make them myself with fruit and protien powder to keep the sugar down.

I also looooove craisins. I can go through the Costco sized bag in a week, if that's what I'm craving.

I go for the 4-5 small meals a day rather than 3 big ones because I can't eat what most Americans think of as a "big meal". (I feel my heart getting ready to infarct just looking at Denny's or IHoP ads. Those mountains of crap -- blech!) I eat light meals, feel nice and full, and then my stomach is growling again 2-3 hours later. So I don't eat many "snack foods" -- more "real foods" in small portions, with my favorite flavors (savory, sour, vinegary).

I do like a mid-afternoon snack of something crunchy. Crunchy food wakes me up when my energy is flagging even faster than a cup of coffee. I was already a crunch-snacker when I read an article that suggested that crunching stuff in your teeth triggers alertness in the brain and is recommended as a substitute for caffiene for an afternoon pick-me-up.

My favorite crunchy snacks are hard pretzels, carrots, chips with some body to them. Get me started on those, and I find it hard to stop until the bag is empty.

I seldom go for sweet snacks unless I'm having a specific craving, which is rare. I don't have much of a sweet-tooth.

Not where I'm from.

As host of a dinner party, I would hope I would not be pressuring my guests to make themselves uncomfortable or sick for my sake, but rather that I could make them feel welcome enough to do as they liked.

As a diner in a restaurant, I can take with me any food I cannot finish at the table.

Actually, as a host of dinner parties, my guests can take leftovers with them too, if they like. Nobody is expected to gorge themselves past comfort for the sake of complimenting the cook.

the latter, I'd be heartbroken if someone didn't eat my cooking
Then don't put more on the plate than a person can comfortably eat.

no thats what self control is for, not being physically able to finish all the food on your plate is unhealthy
You have clearly never been to an American restaurant. In many dining places here, it would endanger your life to clean your plate because of the psychotically huge portions.

Not really - leaving a small amount on your plate demonstrates to your host that he has satisfied your appetite and is polite even if you are not quite full. Eating every last grain of rice shows that your host has failed to provide enough sustenance for you and should be avoided.
