South Carolina is so gay

According to a tourism campaign held in the UK.

However...

News of the campaign and a poster with the tagline "South Carolina is so gay" reached the state late last week where it was condemned by Senator David Thomas. The state employee who approved the campaign has since resigned...

"South Carolinians will be irate when they learn their hard earned tax dollars are being spent to advertise our state as 'so gay,'" said Senator Thomas.

Other US destinations featured in Amro Worldwide's campaign - including Washington DC, Las Vegas, Boston and Atlanta – have not reported any such backlash. The Boston poster, which picked up on its status as capital of the first US state to legalise same-sex marriage, is thought to be expecting a huge gay-tourism boost if a ruling goes ahead to allow out-of-state gay marriages there as well.

Amro claim the adverts are enhancing the positive associations with the word "gay". "The expression 'That is so gay" [is often used] as a form of put down, not of gay and lesbian people directly, but rather as a general way to suggest that for something to be "gay" is negative or bad … This campaign will 'reclaim' the term 'so gay'," says their website.

South Carolinians, however, remain unconvinced. "We're so gay?" asked one baffled resident when the story was put to him by a local television journalist. "Nah, wrong state. Go to California."

What is the gayest US state? I'm not putting up 50 poll options only because I can't.

I guess California has to be in the running, any others?

Oh yeah, before the link patrol nazis start complaining - link (http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/jul/16/gay.travel)

Hmmm, SC isn't so bad. I would suggest one of the Dakotas or the state of New Mexico.

Also, California is unfourtlny (spelled wrong) host to almost everything...Game shows, Facebook, etc. So it's not that bad...

edits; I really don't care if someone is gay, I thought you meant in the sense, like that's so gay. My apologies

I know you were probably joking, but I live in TN, with family in both Carolinas and Virginia. Yeah, you're going to get assholes, but you'll get those everywhere.

The Bible Belt is a fine place to be gay. In fact, it might surprise you to know that Atlanta, GA boasts one of the highest gay populations over all other major US cities.

I can kind of agree with you on that, but again, it depends on where you go. City governments are far more liberal than your uptight suberbian councils.

Unfortunately churches can dominate some politics in the South, but fortunately, there are more and more churches becoming supportive of gay couples.

But still, religion - now that can be more scary than a political climate.

And FYI: Alabama is scary as hell when it comes to religion (no pun intended).

HAHA!

I'd say that California might be gayest. I haven't traveled much around the country, so this is more of a guess.

Well, ive frequently visited the Carolinas, and its just nothing special...i mean, if your going to go on a trip, id recommend Florida, California, Atlanta's pretty kewl, but the rest of Georgia kinda sucks, possibly Colorado...

New York's okay its just that unless your there to do lots of shopping then its kinda boring...like ive been when i had lots of money, and its prettyfun cause there's nothing you cant find there...been there when im broke, and i just sat in the truck and picked out Graffiti, cause everything there was to do, cost money, lol...Once youve got your fill of Buildings and the Statue, there's not alot left...

Especially around Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan.

Or at the interstate rest stop bathrooms on I-95 just south of the city, or in the bushes around the Iwo Jima Memorial on summer nights, or in the dark near the Reflecting Pool.

Trust me, there's no reason to visit South Carolina.

Been there half a dozen times to visit a friend in Sumter. Lot of ummmm...poverty...specially the blacks..and although not enforced..you could see some voluntary segregation...people generally kept to themselves and thier kind.

It was hot and dry as hell during summer...and was ok during winter...

The state education is in a really bad shape...they had to import teachers in heavy numbers just to keep the schools running...natives who get education just flee out of there..I guess..

Indeed a rather poor example :(
What they should have done was call things like wildly popular sports, tv series and so on as gay. The primary meaning of gay is still fun after all - and that would reenforce the positive meaning.

Or confuse people even more . But that is good because it gets attention ;)
