I've noticed that on several news networks, the attractiveness of the reporter correlates directly to the importance of the report.

On a side note, CNN has only beautiful people.

What difference does it make how the guy looks? Does it affect the news in some way?
Glen-Rhodes

Of course it does. Nobody wants to listen to an ugly person.

So that means the reporter has to look like algae to report about algae? :D

Given that this is a video report, yes, it does. It's a visual experience, and his appearance is sufficiently startling to divert attention from the story he is reporting.

Not that the story he is reporting is particularly important.

With attitudes like that, I can't begin to wonder why people fear that television is dumbing down.

No, no, no, no. Though, that would be pretty neat.

If the story ranks 1, on a scale of 0-10, in importance, then the reporter will rank 1 in attractiveness. It's how we make sure that we report everything, but still make sure our biases come through.

Don't be self-righteous. I like having the news, but I also like looking at pretty people.

Television has always been dumb. It doesn't offer the capabilities of print media, the ability to efficiently provide information, that is easily re-referenced.

Of course not. The English are even limier. The Scots bring up the average you pull down, even if that particular Gaussian curve is skewed.

Neither of those would be a loss, specially not Orlando Bloom. Call me mainstream, but I like men, not men who look like women trying to look like men.

Importance, perhaps. Veracity or integrity? No. FOX newwws has spankworthy "reporters" but its importance is limited to its function as an unofficial propaganda ministry rather than a news outlet.

I don't see anything wrong with him and I don't see why his looks should be important or even noteworthy. It seems a little petty to start threads criticising random news reporters who communicate perfectly well just because you don't find them attractive.

Ironically, it's practically an English sense of humour. That sort of joke is very common in my house.

Honestly, I don't see the level of hideosity that the OP seems to want me to see. He's not leading-man handsome or anything, but he's hardly repugnant. This thread makes me wonder what the matter is with some people.

It's the voice that's the problem. While personally I wouldn't vote for him in the Mr. Universe elections, he's just a bit non-likable. Not ugly per se.

Agreed there's far worse out there. It's a shame that this topic has merely perpetuated the stereotype that many Americans are shallow, superficial and overly concerned about physical appearance

As long as I don't have to look at a naked, scabarous leper with weeping open sores leaving a trail of bloody ichor behind him, it doesn't really matter to me what the reporter looks like.

He looks plainly better than 70 per cent of the NS guys that have posted their pictures on these forums.

I can't see what is so hideous about him.

And then, if you want news reported by beautiful people, go and watch the weather channel. The appearance of the people reporting to you shouldn't matter if you are a half-brained human really interested in the news. If you aren't, don't even bother to look at serious reports, and go and watch the weather channel.

If you don't like the weather channel, then go and read a newspaper, with a playboy magazine. Use your imagination and you will have both, serious news, with beautiful people attached to it. In case you can't really imagine it, use a pair of scissors and some glue, and leave the serious reporters alone.

Because obviously, this man is the ugliest man on earth (not) and his appearance has everything to do with his intelligence and his ability to report the news. (Not.)

I wouldn't have noticed his appearance if it hadn't been pointed out. hHe's not that ugly and my attention wouldn't be and isn't diverted from the news story because of his appearance, but because it is a boring news story.

He's not really that ugly, and his voice isn't really that bad. It's just that the things he's saying are boring (to most of us, I think), which makes him less attractive.
