This will be funny if they implement it - the first time some 16 year old hacker gets the idea to shock everyone on the plane, and post the video on Youtube.

How many of you would stop flying? How many would be willing to fly with this device on their arm?

A senior government official with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expressed great interest in a so-called safety bracelet that would serve as a stun device, similar to that of a police Taser®. According to this promotional video found at the Lamperd Less Lethal, Inc. website, the bracelet would be worn by all airline passengers (video also shown below).

This bracelet would:

• Take the place of an airline boarding pass

• Contain personal information about the traveler

• Be able to monitor the whereabouts of each passenger and his/her luggage

• Shock the wearer on command, completely immobilizing him/her for several minutes

The Electronic ID Bracelet, as it’s referred to, would be worn by every traveler “until they disembark the flight at their destination.” Yes, you read that correctly. Every airline passenger would be tracked by a government-funded GPS, containing personal, private and confidential information, and would shock the customer worse than an electronic dog collar if the passenger got out of line.

It really sounds more trouble than its worth these days. Not only that but their security is apparently conducted by the most humourless miserable bastards (and bitches) that could be found in their many and diverse states.

Why arent we proposing these for prisoners?
A bracelet or collar that would shock them if they escaped or went outside of their approved boundaries.

Nah...wouldnt want to treat them like animals, right?

This is hilariously awful. I love how the product's called a "safety bracelet".

"Here, wear this safety bracelet."
"How does it keep me safe?"
"Well, if we thought you were out of line, and you weren't wearing the bracelet, we'd have to shoot you. This way, we can just torture you with shocks and there's a higher chance that you'll survive."
"Oh, makes sense then."

I also love that it's possible to activate the shock via a laser. If this thing gets wide use, I'll be taking bets on how many months it'll be before someone figures out how to modify a laser pointer to activate the bracelet. What a useful weapon for a terrorist wanting to subdue a planeload of passengers!

They don't let you do that anymore. If two people get up together and are suspected of (or seen) going into a bathroom together, questions are asked and hell is raised. After all, although the odds are in favor of nookie, there's that tiny little chance they're in there together being terrorists.

But oh so necessary. After all, since 11th Sept. there has been hundreds, if not thousands of plane hijackings.

Isn't that what the Jews said when the gays and the mentally disabled were being sterilized?
Isn't that what the Germans said when the Jews were put in concentration camps?

That's a dangerous attitude to have, to OK a curtailment of freedoms that might eventually be turned against you.
After all, if airline passengers can be forced to wear stungun bracelets, what's next? Making people prove they're Bush-lovin' Republicans before they're allowed near the president during a public appearance (oh wait, we're already doing that)?
There has to be some criteria you fit that could be used against you, whether skin color, sexual orientation, religion, country of origin, political party, or choice of jam flavor.
You may not be doing anything "wrong", but you could BE somebody wrong.

the only problem I see is that if something happens they will likely shock everyone on the plane rather then look up who is causing the problem.

So that autistic kid in the next row over might get me zapped for acting up.

exactly. I was saying IF they were concerned. But anyway, no smart terrorist is going to bother with airplanes any more. The security is tight enough that the effort to get through could be expended else where.

Why not expand this? If its just on the airplane, why not in the whole airport? If your going to ride the public bus, you could be a danger to other people so you have to wear a shock bracelet on on the bus too. I read a statistic that said that the majority of drug deals go down in parks, and people get mugged all the time. So if your going to a park, you have to wear one. Public sporting events, too. People get out of control at those all the time. Hell, as soon as you leave your house you should have to wear one. Only the criminals would have to worry about it anyway, and you don't support criminals, do you?

Does no one else see this becoming a problem?

I would not fly on any plane that required me to wear such a device. If all airlines and airplanes required such a device, I would stop flying.

no.

I wont even use "EZ Pass" to pay tolls

not interested in any more tracking things connected to me or my stuff

Bingo...I even pay cash, despite Visa's constant complaints that I'm ruining their choreography.

If I were trying to kill the airline industry I don't think I could come up with a quicker, surer, way.

If this gets implemented, I'm buying stock in FirstGroup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FirstGroup), which operates Greyhound bus lines.

Also...

According to this promotional video found at the Lamperd Less Lethal, Inc. website, the bracelet would be worn by all airline passengers

Tazer devices are not 100% non-lethal...this idea is a lawsuit just waiting to happen.

There's nothing paranoid about not using EZ-pass. If two toll booths are 70 miles apart and you go through them in less than an hour you can get a speeding ticket in the mail.

"But you're 21 years old and have no history of prior heart conditio-"
"Yeah, but I really like pacing, ok? Now shut the hell up and start breaking my ribs, I've got a seven AM flight to Columbus tomorrow."

Alternately, I could just join the chorus of people saying "Fuck no, I'd sooner remove my penis with a rusty bread knife."

Nice.

Now I see terrorist groups training with exposure to voltages, or with basic electronic countermeasures to either disable the bracelet, or resist its effects, while the normal passengers get fucked by a flight attendant being careless with the switch and sitting over the activating device, frying some poor guy.
