I *hate* bugs. I truly do. They're disgusting nasty little creatures, who seem to think that my room is a perfect living space. naturally, as summer began to set in, bugs began to swarm all over our house. So, I've taken a policy of keeping my romm twenty below at all times.:D. Have any of you NSGers had bug problems? If so, (Or even if you haven't) do you like bugs? Can you stand them?

I particularly like Huntsmen. They don't build webs, just grab the bugs right out of the air.

I keep bugs... superworms, crickets, beetles, silkworms, hornworms etc... granted, they are food for my lizards and my tarantula but... I don't mind them until they start to smell or make noise.

Outside bugs don't really bother me either. I mean... it's a bug. Down at the bottom of my list of favorite bugs, though, are earwigs, silverfish centipedes, millipedes and pill bugs... The rest I'm sort of 'meh'.

Outside spiders I don't mind finding in my room... but they get evicted when I find them in my bed. Though, the big fuzzy ones that crawl out of the drains get tossed out on spot. I don't trust them... they always look like they're plotting something.

Actually, tarantulas aren't that bad. My daughter has five of them. Of course, I'm spider sitting right now, until she gets settled in her new job etc. Which probably means I'll have them for a couple of years, since she'll probably be deployed overseas at some point. The worst thing about them is what they eat, I hate crickets.

I can't stand them either... Loud, dirty, and the smell is absolutely toxic! I'm glad I'm past the days of 1000 crickets in a rubbermaid container. I want more tarantulas, but dad has imposed a 4 pet limit.

I have the traditional starter T... G. rosea. I got her, and her whole set up second hand for $30... Ideally I wanted a B. smithi but I wasn't about to turn down a $30 spider. The tank alone is worth more than that. Now I have to save my money for my adult B. smithi. They grow so slow that by the time they get colors, they sell for $100+

Fortunately, my G. rosea has never kicked hairs at me. She holds up her front legs when she doesn't feel like being touched, but mostly she's all show. She's sulking in her log now because I pulled her off the top of her cage. I'm terrified she's going to fall and burst open.

bugs dont bother me.

the house is so full of crickets that some mornings i have a dozen in the kitchen sink (i gather them up in a dixie cup and toss them out the front door). i have dozens of spiders in various spots on the various ceilings. i vacuum up the cobwebs now and then when they get too messy.

this time of year we get tiny flying bugs that come in through the screens and fly around the lights. those i dont like but they dont creep me out.

What I hate most is the mosquitoes. The sound they make is intolerable, their bites itch, and they're so... single minded. If you manage to mortally wound one, it still returns to feast on your blood, ignoring its insides which no longer inhabits its body. They are useless to mankind and unfit for anything but extermination.

So, we're all agreed on wasps and mosquitoes, then?

It bites you when you're minding your own business, it's bad.

Anyone who has a phobia for ladybugs really ought to get counselling. They're beautiful and varied and don't even get stuck in the honey if you leave it open. Let alone bite.

It's not a phobia if it's based in a real apprehension of harm (like they will actually bite you and it will hurt.)

What I find really weird is when people are afraid of moths.

Hate is a reaction to fear. Fear cripples the intellect; hate is the instinct which rises up to defend its organism, when intellect the champion is out of play.

I hate spiders. They really give me the creeps, the bloody eight-legged hairy fucking children-of-Lloth bastards! So I'd encourage scorpions to live near my home if I found any... but in Milan scorpions are hard to get by.

If I could have it my way, the whole Aedes and Culex genera would be wiped off the universe.

Sometimes I have cockroaches and ants near my house, but they don't come inside because I keep it extra-clean - I regularily clean the floor with ammonia. Also some caterpillars on my plants, the bloody pillagers.

I like spiders, and find them beautiful to look at. I love the way that they move, the way that they're so well-adapted to the little niche of nature that they occupy and, most of all, just how damned good they are at keeping the population of other house-dwelling arthropods down.

When my wife and I moved into a new house in late 2006 I claimed the floored loft area as my 'den' so that I had a decently-sized area for my computers and stuff and ever since then this guy (http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk120/strangelybeige/helloThere.jpg) has been sharing my space. He's quiet(*), he generally stays out of the way, he doesn't mess up the place and I'm giving him the credit for the almost complete lack of insects that I've seen up there.

He can stay :D

(* I've identified it as 'he' since male Tegenaria duellica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_house_spider) tend to have more pronounced pedipalps, and this specimen seems to fit the bill. Well, that and the fact that he does a whole lot of roaming, which is also a male trait in that species. Interestingly enough, the map on that wiki page seems to suggest that the species doesn't live where I do... probably just another example of someone confusing 'England' with 'the UK' :p )

bugs have their place. most of them are very welcome out in the garden.

not creating an environment to atract them INSIDE the house is the best way to prevent being colonized by them. maybe the only way. no mater how many you kill, once they've established a beach head, there's always more where those came from.

unless and untill you can completely deny them the environmental conditions inside the house that are attracting them.

a few little spiders are mostly cool, but the presence of preditors, which spiders are, generally indicates the presence of their prey, which generally tend to be undesirables like ants, flys, mosquitoes, et al. (which are still mostly ok outside, as long as they STAY outside and can be kept out of inside.)

I don't like the cockroaches I've met so far, probably because when I found them in my apartment they behaved as if they owned the place. I preferred to stick to the illusion that it was my apartment, rather than theirs, and I found their impertinence threatening.

Other than that, bugs are neat-o. I wish more of Fabre's stuff was available in English.
