Strange things you do to food

The South Islands
13-07-2008, 01:43
Take normal food, do something abnormal to it, and it becomes yours, rite guys?

As I sit here eating my dinner, I am reminded how strange people can be about food. Everyone does something a little different to suit their tastes. I, for one, put barbeque sauce in my mashed potatoes. I haven't heard of anyone doing that. And I find it delicious to the extreme.

So, fellow Generalites, what do you do to bastardize your food to make it uniquely yours?
IL Ruffino

I put white horseradish in most of my egg concoctions.

Sometimes I also add caviar paste.

I use a lot of pepper, too.

There's really nothing you can do to potatoes that hasn't been done. I've put pretty much everything in them, including BBQ sauce (though if that's routine for you, it might be uniquely yours as a recipe - I dunno). After all the experimentation, I find that the classics (shredded cheese, chives, sour cream, etc.) go best in potatoes.

Edit: new font, or am I dreaming?

You're dreaming. We're actually figments of your mind comming to life. We don't exist.

Just FYI.

And the barbeque sauce on mashed potatoes isn't something I had heard of before. I just tried it one day for shiggles. And it's great.

I wouldn't know, I have firefox set up to override page fonts to my default that I find easiest to read. some pages have BAD fonts.

I just have normal food. just lots of meat. try Eye Fillet for $2.20 a Kg, bacon for $2.15 a kg. In the supermarkets it's over $28 a kg for eye fillet, and about $12 a kg for bacon.

Theres benefits in living on a farm and eating your own animals :D

Dude... thats cheap meats.

On another note, lets see... I put salsa on lots of things. Like ham and salad sandwiches... I've eaten leftover rice, which I have microwaved to reheat it, with sweet chilli sauce. That's it. I've done that multiple times, its a fairly tasty lunch.

For the time being I work in a fast-food restaurant that offers blue cheese dressing with its buffalo wings. I don't eat the buffalo wings with the blue cheese, but I dip the fries that come with them in the blue cheese dressing. Mmmmm! :p

I cook my food to be delicious as-is, so I don't have to add anything after the fact.

Except, of course, my hamburgers. I love to put barbeque sauce on them, especially when I have cheddar cheese cooking on top of the meat during the last few minutes.

I've eaten pickles with M&Ms before. Pickles and peanut butter is one of those things that sounds potentially good, but for which I'd have to work up a lot of courage.

I don't eat unusual food so much as I'm just very picky about what's in my food. I don't like a lot of "stuff" in my food, usually. I don't like most sandwiches except grilled cheese and PB&J because the rest have too much "stuff" in them--meat, cheese, mayo, mustard, lettuce, pickle, onion--it overwhelms me.

I liked grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but I think that's pretty common.

When I was eating disordered I only ate certain things in certain ways. Like I'd cut up a green apple into 30 pieces and spend 2.5 hours eating it, eating one slice every five minutes.

Yep, pork is free, the only costs with bacon and ham is the processing, which is $2.15 a kg. there's a pig hunter who comes out with his dogs every few months and he just splits his catch, he gets some and we get some. I don't have pig dogs myself.

Venison is 90 cents a deer, that's one round of .303, I don't count range time as hunting/meat costs since thats fun time poking holes in paper from 100M-200M away. No transport costs to the hunting zones as I can just walk over the farm boundary on 3 sides into national park.

Beef comes from our own cows. It doesn't cost anything to rear a bull but the grass, and that grows free, and a 5 cent rubber ring round the calfs nuts so it doesn't become a bull. :D once grown, again theres just the butcher costs, Has to be a butcher since we don't have a bandsaw or a powered chiller to hang and age it in.

Wild turkey is simple, a .22 from ambush through the head.

Goat is another 90c .303 round.

If you have a rifle and a knife, meat comes cheap :D

the only mildly unique thing i do with food is put an assortment of cajun spices on my baked potatoes sometimes, often with the beans. other than that its paprika on cheese on toast, and i always have sweetcorn on pizza. but maybe those are things everybody does...

i used to put ketchup on pizzas, which was a bit weird. ketchup on hot dogs? totally normal.

Hello, first post, but I personally like to have something sweet with all cerials (how do you spell it?), or I mix them together. For example, cornflakes and shreddies with chocolate.

ALso, my favorate food would have to be a chicken dish, either soy sauce fried chicken, or homemade sweet and sour chicken.

Oh dear, this food has made me hungy. Damn.

I generally eat things in proportion to each other. Say you have meat, potatoes and veg: I'll eat pieces of each proportional in size to the whole, so to have three bitesize pieces to finish with.

I eat with my hands as much as possible. I really don't handle cutlery well, especially when it comes to cutting things. I'm ridiculously awkward with a fork and knife in use at the same time.

Things that need cutting up, I like to cut up before I start eating, rather than as I go along.

If I'm eating cooked peas, I squish them between my teeth one by one and then eat them. Unless someone's watching me behaving thus.

I like to save a little taste of everything until the end...I hate running out of one of the items on my plate...I feel like the food is then unbalanced. And I always try to leave the best morsels for last. Which is why it would absolutely make me insane when my ex would reach over and steal the last piece of whatever I had on my plate. Messed with my finish.

At thanksgiving I usually mix my cranberry sauce with my mashed potatoes.

I'll also usually go through 4 condiments while eating french fries (ketchup, mustard, malt vinegar, mayo) oh, and I add booze to a lot of things one wouldn't usually think of adding booze to (i.e. sake + stir fry=yum).

My bf will order veggie burgers with bacon though... this usually tops my level of weirdness in terms of looks one gets while ordering food although I know two other people who do this as well so it's definitely not unique.

boil it, instead of frying anything, with a squeze of lemon and a just enough amount of powdered chicken bullion or gravy mix.

i don't know how unusual that is, by my stomic likes it that way.

well not sweet stuff obviously, but salt stuff. i mean that's how my stomic and taste classifies everything edible, as either sweet or salt. of the two i usually prefer 'salt', but top off a meal with sweet to stop keeping wanting more and more of the main 'salt' part of it. like the noodles and meat. or vegitables or whatever. vegetables i class as salt and fruit as sweet.

I regularly eat a whole pot of rice by itself and thinks it's one of the most delicious, complete meals I can have.

I put chili (the spice) into nearly everything I cook/eat.

I add cinnamon to my milk.

Oh, and I live in a shared flat with a shared storage room and fridge, so I make a habit of making everyone else believe I do gross things with my stock items on a regular basis so I get to keep my stuff for my own consumption.
