Sports Suggestions

Aloha NSG-ers, I come to thee for help

I want to take up a new sport but to be honest I have no idea what would be best. In the past i've tried martial arts, football, rugby, swimming, skydiving as more serious activities. Of these I have only managed to maintain an interest in one but I don't want to spend absolutely all my time on that.

What would you folks suggest I try out? and why? Hopefully the variety of backgrounds here will bring up something I haven't thought about before.

Tennis or badminton would mix it up a bit. Maybe squash if you want to get a decent amount of exercise from it.

I've never really tried my hand at cricket but from the looks of things it doesn't really seem to involve a significant amount of exercise or excitement. This is, however, a complete outsiders take on it and I know that spectators often get it completely wrong.

Yeah I remember playing squash in school when I was younger. It definitely had me sweating by the end of things and my gym has recently built new courts. It would be something I would take up more as an add on to working out in the gym rather than a serious sport to improve at.

What could possibly go wrong with battering each other with big sticks

You try staying in the middle for a long innings or sprinting in to bowl 10 overs on the trot and tell me it doesn't involve much exercise...

Adrenaline-filled, one could say.

One of the thoughts that crossed my mind yesterday when I was looking to join my Uni's kendo club.

If you are in university, then I would suggest that rowing is something to consider. It takes up a whole lot of time. I'm still in school and I'm trainning at least 6 times/week. I know the Queen Uni rowers are trainning 11 times/week. There is also a high level of fitness and technqiue involved so it's not the easiest sport to just pick up.

I live in Dundee. The sunniest city in Scotland.

The sports I have enjoyed the most would definitely be swimming and skydiving. I do still swim but not as part of any particular teams, etc mostly because I prefer swimming as a sort of meditation I suppose. Spending an hour in the pool with my body on auto-pilot tends to clear my head quite well.

Ideally I don't want something that will take up huge amounts of time as my girlfriend is already on the verge of killing me if I spend much more time skydiving. With that in mind I think kayaking and surfing would have to be ruled out as the weather dependence and travel times would be a bit restrictive.

Motor racing. You can start with go-karts, it's very cheap, and very exciting.

If you're young, motorbike racing can be the best bet. It's also very affordable - the cream of the crop of bikes costs much less than a simple family car.

If you need actual exercise, and dancing on the pedals and wrestling the wheel isn't enough, cycling is a nice sport too, as well as a way to get around - you don't even spend time on it, you can just do it as you're going to work or wherever. Although it's fun just all by itself.

Yeah. As far as I am aware the trainning that queens does is in the morning and in the evening. Intrestingly enough, I think that 7/8 guys on their 1st 8 does medicine.
