Your Happiness

I'm really interested in people's perception of emotions and the nature of happiness. I thought it would be nifty to start a thread all about happy stuff.

So, here are some cool questions I think would be fun to discuss:

1. What makes you happy?
2. What do you think would make you a happier person?
3. So far, what has been the happiest moment in your life?

1) Sex, food, getting some brain excercise, reading, drawing and painting, playing with my cats, time with my BF... lots and lots of things

2) More sex, and a bit more money maybe. More time, certainly.

3) When my mother told me she was going to leave my father.

wicked cool

for me, it's
1. So much makes me happy! But most notably it's listening to music, hanging out with friends or reading a really good book.
2. I think I'd be happier if I learned to let things go and accept loss better.
and
3. I have no idea... either finishing The Life of Pi (for some reason, I really love that book), the feeling I got when I first listened to a song by Ravi Shankar, or maybe it was my first kiss. It's hard to tell...

1. What makes you happy?
Being around people, and decent weather.
2. What do you think would make you a happier person?
Less pish weather in the United Kingdom, and more people from overseas in my life.
3. So far, what has been the happiest moment in your life?
Probably just a really kicking camping trip I had with my friends about a month back. Blissful.

1. What makes you happy?

Chocolate, good TV comedy, kittens, the imminent downfall of the bourgeois world order (I might be kidding with the last one)

2. What do you think would make you a happier person?

Acceptance from others that I'm more than able to make my own choices, I'm not a werid nutjob freak , and that I know the best way forward for my life.

3. So far, what has been the happiest moment in your life?

Meeh, I don't care if I sound like a swot saying this, but the honest answer is that its a tie between all of the occasions when I've received important exam results.

My two cents (as usual, stolen from someone else. Apologies):

"Happiness is just a word to me,
and it might have meant a thing or two if I'd have known the difference"

--Mai Yamane

Right now I'm in something of a shitty spot but every time I talk to old folks they told me the same thing: their 20's sucked. Mine sucks too but I think I could put up with it for seven more years; I'm persistent like that.

But to answer your questions (and I think my answers will shed some light on my attitudes) here I go:

1. What makes you happy?
Big paychecks and vacations.

2. What do you think would make you a happier person?
Bigger paychecks, more vacations, and a %&#$@*& woman.

3. So far, what has been the happiest moment in your life?
Summer between Sophomore and Junior year of High School (July of 2002) when I thought I was about to start dating one of those OMG WTF AROOOOOOOOOO girls in my class. She knew like 3 or 4 languages, lived in like 5 or 6 countries, and when she told me she took Spanish so she had a class to sleep through I knew it was meant to be.

Two guesses why August of 2002 didn't make it. I think I'm about due for something to top it. A 2005 trip to Amsterdam came close, but it was cold outside and I left a day early by mistake (d'oh!)

1) alcohol and quality time
2) working some super easy job where I just sit in a shop or something all day listening to the radio and/or living to see the 3 day weekend
3) that banking glitch that caused my account to be permanently set to £700 :D

1. My girlfriend,
2. Seeing more of my girlfriend
3. I don't know but following form my previous theme: something to do with my girlfriend.

this will do for me :)

2. Getting a job and paying some bills would be nice. Re-arranging my life to co-parent my daughter more effectively would be great.

3. My daughter's birth.

1. Words. Books. My team (the baseball/basketball/hockey/soccer team I follow) winning. Live performances by bands I love. Writing. Climbing in the hills. Being with the person I love (in lots of ways, including ones we don't need to get into here).

2. Being more accepting of myself, not beating myself up so much over every thing I don't do perfectly or every way that I'm deficient. Having a more positive attitude about life in general.

3. I can pinpoint a few "worst of my life" moments, but happiest ones are harder. I would say, not in any order:

a. Sitting in a movie theater with my ex during some previews and thinking about how much he means to me, and having him lean over and kiss my cheek in the sweetest, gentlest way anyone has ever kissed me, and knowing he was thinking the same thing (I asked him later :p).

b. Watching from the stands with some good friends, some deeply good people, as the Oakland A's won Game 3 of the 2006 ALDS to advance to the ALCS for the first time in 16 years.

c. Standing breath-close to my girlfriend at the time (still a good friend) shouting the words and getting crushed into the stage while one of my favorite bands, GlassJAw, played about 6 inches away.

-The ability, at the moment, of ending a phase in my life that has been far too sour. Accomplishing, coming to the end of that phase, will probably make me happy. And that is so because I will finally be able to spread my wings.

2. What do I think would make me a happier person?
- A true challenge and finding the person that truly completes me.

3. What has been the happiest moment in my life?
-Sadly, I can´t recall one moment on this instant. I guess the happiest day of my life was a few days ago when I saw my mother after almost a year of being apart. Other than that, I´m lacking presently.

1. What makes you happy?
Spending time with friends and family and random adventures!

2. What do you think would make you a happier person?
Moving out of my parents house. I love em but even living with them for a month is stressful. Roll on September!

3. So far, what has been the happiest moment in your life? When I received my exams result and found out I got a place at the university I was set on. On that same day I passed my driving test. Probably the best day of my life.

That's very possible as I did the very same thing once upon a time. One can enlist in the US Army at the age of 17 (with parental permission) regardless of whether or not they have finished high school. If the prospect does not finish high school then the contract is canceled and they have to restart the process once they get a high school diploma or GED.

Of course, said enlistment isn't really final until the prospect leaves to attend initial entry training. If you simply don't show up at the appointed time and place to go to said training the contract is also canceled and no adverse actions can be taken against you.

1. What makes you happy?-Music, reading, walking through the woods, having a nice dinner, watching movies....Really, a lot of things make me happy.

2. What do you think would make you a happier person?-Going home.

3. So far, what has been the happiest moment in your life?-Hard to say, I've had a lot of happiest moments.

All in all, I am just a naturally happy person.

1. Bliss. Usually obtained by relaxing, without a schedule, on the beach or on some idyllic pasture or hill. Also, the usual things: intellectual stimulation, sports, funny things, good company, sex, etc.

2. Retirement on an island, with hills and forest. There would also be rocks to climb upon, and all constructs would be interesting (stone circles, pyramids, etc.). There would be a shallow, narrow channel between this island and another, with a small bridge I could use. There would be plenty of, safe, wildlife, minimal bugs, lots of sunshine broken only by solo clouds and the ocassional shower. Temperatures would not exceed sevent degrees, nor go below twenty-five.

Ah, bliss.

3. Well, there was this one time I visited California. I was really able to relax there, somewhat like what I described in #1.

1. A life of virtue in tandem with the requisite materials necessary for a life of moderate comfort, intellectual stimulation, and social/civic interaction.

2. Well, immediately my needs fall under the "requisite materials" side of the equation: I'm poor, and I lack an extended friend/paramour network that I can work with daily. Beyond that, I need to cultivate virtuous patterns of behavior a lot more thoroughly; I think I've been sliding off my training in justice, temperance, and beneficence lately. Partly that's due to the isolation and poverty, but even so, I need to work on it.

So, here are some cool questions I think would be fun to discuss:

1. What makes you happy?

creating and exploring

2. What do you think would make you a happier person?

living in a world that did not motivate people to put nongratifying persuits ahead of them and expect to find gratification doing so.

3. So far, what has been the happiest moment in your life?

happiness is not a matter of moments but of states of mind, sustainable under reasonable circumstances. happiness is a proccess, not a point in time. it is a byproduct, can only be created or exist as a byproduct, of being in the proccess of doing, whatever it is that gratifies uniquely you, personally as an individual, to be doing.

the enimy of happiness is punishing people for refusing to deceive themselves, which is what tyranny is, reguardless of idiology, economics or belief.

more public transportation, closer to free, fewer fences and keep out signs, more interesting and mazelike places for people to live, being allowed to build and live in uniquely your own kind of shelter are all things of the kind that i see as being what would make me happier.

and of course all of that, and civil rights too, done in ways optomised for sustainable harmony with nature.
