The Hot Dog Thread! (Well, Hot Dog!)

I like hot dogs! You probably do too. Let's talk hot dogs. :)

What's your favorite hot dog? Do you have a favorite chain or local restaurant? What's your favorite style of dog? "Dragged through the garden," Chicago style? Foot-long, Dodger-dog style? Thin and tightly-tied with a natural casing, for that Gray's Papaya-like snap? Let's hear some opinion, I say. I'll begin.

I like an all-beef dog, preferably Vienna or Hebrew National, but as long as it's tasty, I'm eating it. I'm something of a dog "purist," I guess, but I won't make trouble if I see a friend applying catsup - I'm a live-and-let-live hot dog fan, you could say. :p Being from Chicago originally, I'll occasionally stack my dog in the traditional way, if I can find everything I need. But so long as the basics are there, I'm happy. My family just joined Costco, so I tried my first ever Nathan's Famous today - I shouldn't have waited so long! I was expecting a wimpy dog, knowing that Nathan's are the hot-dog-eating contest dog of choice, but they're a meal of a dog, I found out. Nathan's is in my top 10, as of today! :D

Poll is on the way!

I just realized that I didn't define what a Chicago-style hot dog (my favorite) was! Might be a good idea, given that not everyone's from N. America, of course:

http://czerniec.com/2007/02/04/chicago-hot-dogs.jpg

The hot dog is topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (usually neon green), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt; but never ketchup.

That's wikipedia, but it's accurate, from my experience. :)

Ugh, yeah. I don't think I'd like a dog that was chunky or pasty or something. That'd be like meat from a food processor, which I can't stand. I'm sure I could live vegetarian if I had been raised that way, but it would be tough after being used to the real deal for so long.

What part? I mean, assuming you like hot dogs in general, the addition of tomato, pickle, onion, etc. isn't anything unusual. Is it the peppers? They're not that spicy, really. Cucumber and kraut are also added oftentimes, but aren't strictly necessary.

I don't really have a particular place that I like hot dogs. Usually we just boil them at home, and then I decide how I want to eat them once they're cooked. Sometimes I like them in a bun with mustard and relish, sometimes I like them chopped up with baked beans (beanie weenies), and sometimes I like them wrapped up in cheese and bread (pigs-in-blankets).

I love the hot dogs you get at baseball games. It's not so much that they taste good, but that it's part of the whole experience of being at a game. Hot dogs, beer, funnel cake, peanuts - the "experience."

What I like best, though, are the ones I make myself. Grill 'em, boil 'em, nuke 'em - serve 'em up on a bun with onions, sweet pickle relish, mustard and ketchup - a perfect quick meal. I tend to prefer Ballpark beef franks or Hebrew National - they just taste better than the others.

Exactly. Half of what makes a hot dog great is how it brings back memories of all the other great hot dogs you've eaten, which is especially great because no one eats a hot dog when they're sad - the hot dog is a symbol of fun and festivities. :p

Heh. I always thought Nathan's was *only* a NY thing until I saw them at Costco - that was a pleasant surprise. As for Chicago style, it's its own distinct thing, I guess, but there's enough meat there when it's done right. :p

I'm very picky about my hot dogs. I inherited it from my mom who inherited it from hers. As such, we didn't have hot dogs very often due to the expense of good meat market hot dogs, but when we did, they were awesome.

Over the years, it seems like every good hot dog producer eventually goes national and becomes well known for their hot dogs. Also eventually, the quality drops. A good example of that is Hummel Bros. based out of New Haven. I loved their hot dogs since I was a kid. Then they went national. They're still good hot dogs and I sometimes buy them when on sale or when nothing better is available. There was another after them that I can't remember.

Right now, my favorite is Grote and Weigel hot dogs out of Bloomfield, CT. They're starting to get a bit popular too, however. Supermarkets carry them now. It may be time to start shopping around again for when they slip in quality too.

So after this poll made me think about (and salivate over) white hots, I decided against my better judgement to look up just what exactly was in them and why they were white. Why would I do that? Luckily, I'll forget the trauma soon and eat them again.

But aside from that, I learned that (according to Wikipedia) white hots are a regional preference found almost exclusively in Rochester, NY. I had no idea they weren't nationwide! So, has anyone else here had a white hot? Are they popular anywhere else? Hot dog enthusiasts need to know!

Well at least they had so much respect for you back then. But now, join me in the unrespectable hotdog ketchup-dousers.

It isn't fair. We can't help being this way! Was it nature? Nurture? Is there a ketchup-on-hot-dogs recessive gene, or were our parents absent during the critical period of beginning hot dog consumption in our childhood?

I very rarely (say one every 2 years) have hot dogs at fast food places such as is listed on the poll why? 1) Very few of thus places are in Australia 2) The other places make bad hot dogs, when I have a hot dog I cook it up at home myself.

I will add to the sausage usually a Vienna Tomato sauce, American mustard, Gherkin, Pickled onion and cheese.

Sometime I may add Sauerkraut.
