New York NS Meet (August)

So, taking advantage of a roadtrip, Gasponia and I would like to get a bunch of NSers together this summer in New York City. Unlike some previous meets, since we're on a fairly tight schedule according to our roadtrip plans, there are some fixed details for this meetup.

Date: August 2nd, Saturday
Time: 10amish - 4pmish
Location: Front of the NYC Public Library at 5th Ave and 42nd St. (near Grand Central and Times Square)
Things to Do: I'm a tourist, you tell me :p

So, fill in the poll above and your ideas below, and if you're in a different city that we're going to, perhaps we'll see you then, just drop a note in the other thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=557783). :)

By virtue of the fact that it's my car we're driving on this trip, I will be attending this event. :) Huzzah!

Edit: As to the fourth option in the poll, quit yer whining and host a meet yourself!

I suggest somewhere in or around Times Square. 58th and 5th is a schlep if you're coming in from GCT or Penn Station.

Any ideas on a specific place? I've had enough trouble meeting people in an open space where there weren't that many people, trying to do it in the middle of Times Square would be a nightmare.

I wouldn't suggest meeting in the street, that's for sure! :)

There are tons of easy to find, tacky places in the area, like BB King's or The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, which the average New Yorker tends to avoid but anyone can tell a tourist where it is. And in the worst case scenario, EVERYONE can find Times Square no matter how they're getting into the city. It's only about 7 blocks from either train station, and even the cab drivers from Kazahstan can make drive to Square of Clocks and Lights Flashing. :D

The problem isn't whether or not Eras and I can find the meet location; I've been to the city before and know it decently well for someone who doesn't live there. The problem is that we all look like tourists pretty much. We'd blend it too easily. We need an obvious, relatively quiet meeting place, where the group could gather without mistaking each other for tourists.

I'll be there!!

I suggest meeting in Bryant Park. It has plenty of chairs for groups to sit at. It's right behind the public library. I can put a few signs to guide NS players that want to meet. The NS eye logo would be cool.

If everyone agrees, I'll post directions here.

By the way, since school is out it shouldn't be packed especially at that time. There will be tourists all over the place, but this is NYC...Midtown at that. Bryant park always has empty sections when school is out.

This is far from definite. Summer weekends are my bread and butter and well, the bread and butter has been rationed this summer. Probably due to the recession and gas crunch.

I think also the Penny Arcade Expo is in August in Seattle so i don't know......

We're really not all that interesting, and testing and the arcade expo are much more important. Hell, the PA Expo could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for you. I'd do that if I could.

Well the PA Expo is in Seattle so unless I'm going to work for the Commercial division, I'll probably not go.

Either way, there is a strong likelihood that I may be going to this one ^_^ and I highly doubt you're "interesting" if you're making a big deal about it :P

I won't be there as it's way too far...plus in August I'll be in Europe.

However, I literally just got back from NY.

I suggest meeting in Battery Park, below the Financial District. It's beautiful, open (so you can spot each other)...and well, right below the financial district so there's tons of stuff to see and places to eat.

I think Bryant Park has been suggested twice, and looking at a map of it, it seems quite close to both Times Square and Grand Central Station.

Well, when we did the Philly Meetup last year, alls we did was pick a restaurant (admittedly, a place that had changed IMMENSELY for the worse in the year I'd been gone from Philly), and it was small enough and empty enough that noticing the large group of people sitting around debating with one another wasn't so hard. (Well, it was easy for me, since I was the first one to arrive.)

... oh and surely the most obvious way to meet up is to spam one person's picture all over the internet. That way you all know who to look for on the day. Or Kat could dress up like in the photo where she's at that ren fair. That would be easy to spot. NO! Better idea! The first time Max came to Phx on tour, March 31st of last year, my car was totaled less than a mile from Changing Hands (the bookstore it was held at). Needless to say, I was very annoyed. Pics are up on myspace, BTW.

If I had seen this thread like a month ago, I'd be there.

I like the flag idea. That would be super cool. But if one is in New York, and meeting people on a political-book-based forum, why not meet near the UN building? It would be very funny to take a huge group picture protesting the UN for making us change to the WA.

OH NO! WE'RE GONNA GET SUED!
(thanks, David Letterman) ;)

It's a good thing we aren't going today, if you were going to Bryant Park, seeing that there's over 8,000 people there...

Hmm... good point...

I just checked the calendar -- they're having events at the park on Aug. 2 from noon onwards. We should be ok, I think.

http://www.bryantpark.org/calendar/aug.php?y=2008

And... 8,000? Ahhhh, that's not so much. ;)

We could go over to the UN building if we want, but meeting at the library and adjourning to Bryant Park for a little while if we want seems the easiest option. The first thing at Bryant Park is supposed to be for kids in the Reading Room, so I think we'll be okay sticking around in the park for awhile. Or if we decide to take a tour of the library, we'll be back out in an hour.

You sure the UN would want NSers anywhere near them? -_-

Also due to the bastard post office hours, I can't send you the booty.

I can, however, link you to a majestic photo that you can print off and tape all over NYC and anywhere else you find yourself.

I, for one, would be amused if you were to infiltrate the Met and get my photo on the gallery wall.

Now that is truly a work of art! ^_^

Also, it's getting awefully gritty to the wire.....

Well, Gaspo and I will be in the city doing touristy things if you care to meet, but most people don't like to come out on Sundays because they have to work the next day.

I found the city to be less crowded for that reason :).

I found the city to be less crowded for that reason :).People tend to give me plenty of room so space is never really a problem for me, on the other hand I often walked around dressed as a Viking, and often smell like one too, so maybe that is why I get enough room when I walk around.

Well, only a few days left until the meetup, hope you're all ready. Gaspo and I brought along several of Max's books to hold up for people outside the library. That'll be appropriate, books at the library.

Eras and I have modified our plans such that we're good until about 5:30 as well, so that gives us a lot more flexibility in timing. Looking forward to seeing those of you who are coming this Saturday, at 10AM in front of the Public Library at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street. We'll try to hang around until about 10:30, after which we'll be in Bryant Park for a while, so late comers might be able to get us. If you'll be later than that, you can email me and I'll give you my cell number if you'd like to try to meet us. Emails sent to gasponia@gmail.com will pop up fairly promptly on my phone, so even messages the day of will be okay. Looking forward to seeing lots of folks!

Can't afford it, and besides, I'm too busy looking for an apartment. If one of these things ever gets held in Bangor, ME, I'm there.

Not that there's anything to do here.

I shan't be there in person, but will in spirit. I've already had a chance to sign the infamous Book during a marvelous lunch with Eras and Gaspo on their trip north.

I encourage anyone who is still waffling to make the effort. They're nice people.

The rest of you guys should have come, really. Carterway and I really enjoyed spending time with Erastide, Gasponia and The Tresville Element -- they are awesome folks. We saw a photographic exhibition on "Eminent Domain", some amazing oil painting portraits and, the architecture of the NYPL itself. The carvings, statues, and murals on the walls and ceilings are incredible.
