what "rules" did your parents have that were arbitrary that you now break regularly?

what arbitrary rules are there in your everyday life that piss you off?

what rules do you think many people see as arbitrary that are actually there for good reason?

Two hours a day on the computer, yet unlimited TV time. She says that: "I don't have to give a reason. I'm in charge." So yeah, i vote just a random rule to REALLY PISS ME OFF! ARGH! *Iz breaking rule at his granparents house right now :D*

Well there was a no Cussing rule that i now break on a regular basis when conversing...I guess there was like an age limit or something, lol...

Gulfport has a Curfew policy for people under 18 after something like 6 o'clock...it doesnt directly affect me, being 19, but, I work in a Movie Theater so i have to enforce it, which sucks cause i think its totally unfair...

Speed Limits...nough said, lol...

Yeah, I limit "screen time" so they get to divide it up between computer, TV, and DS. It kinda annoys the oldest that texting on her dad's phone to her friends is also "screen time". I limit it so they will do stuff like go outside.

Speed limits would be one of the ones I think a lot of people think are arbitrary but actually have a reason. It's safer and less wasteful for people to keep a moderate speed in line with other traffic.

It isn't having speed limits that I find to be arbitrary - it's the exact numbers they choose.

Two roads may be very, very similar but have very different speed limits. If I can't see any reason for that, I am only left to believe it is arbitrary.

1) I am sure there are plenty and am sure as soon as someone brings some up I will compleatly empathize

2) (This counts as my number 1) The no meat on fridays during lent (but fish and seafood is alright!)

That one has ALWAYS seemed almost compleatly arbitrary to me it always made me angry and I make it a point to break it when I think of it

Yeah, but my mother... Well, I don't go outside anyway. I'll just go into my room and read starship troopers. For the hundreth time...

Ah, that aspect, I think so. There is a road here that before the bridge there is a curve that you have to slow to 15......then after the bridge there is a speed limit sign for school zones for 25.... then after the school zone it goes back to 15 for a curve. You get to speed up to hit school children!

Lights out.

Parents used to take away my light bulbs from my room to keep me from staying up until 1am reading... annoyed the hell out of me, but I can read pretty well by moonlight now.

Had a no swearing rule until it became evident that I was well-versed enough in language to not particularly need to swear. Not that I don't now, all the time, but whatever.

Had a curfew at one point, but usually didn't even need one. I once was grounded for a week for staying over at a girl's place past eleven in the Summer. That's the harshest penalty I ever received for anything, really.

TV was never a huge problem because I liked to read and draw as well. Didn't have a Nintendo until I was 14, didn't have a home computer with internet until I was 18 and out of the house anyway.

Do you count screen time on the DS as double, since it has two screens?

I never understood why I couldn't drink and smoke until I turned 13. WTF? I mean, come on. Come. On. "because I said so" is the only answer I'd get.

Actually I can't think of anything.

:p I totally should! Actually playing "Brain age" or something else mentally stimulating is half time. I should count triple time for that stupid dog game though......"oh, pet the puppy, oh, clean up digital poo" I have to beg her to clean up her real life cat's poo!

My parents never made a rule that wasn't for safety (don't play with the glass doors on the stereo, don't leave home without telling someone, etc)

The only one that I broke was "no girls in your room"...My sister and her friends always took the living room, so all my friends just came up to my room. They gave up on it quickly.

what arbitrary rules are there in your everyday life that piss you off?

The fact that I can't get a residents parking permit because my car is registered in CT (despite the fact that I have been a full-time MA resident for two years)

My family didn't have an excessive number of rules, in fact, there were not all that many official rules to begin with. And, I guess because I had free reign to act, I actually self-moderated my behaviors from another age. I imposed greater punishment on myself than my parents ever imposed on me.

1) "eat your sandwiches first" I mean fuck that, I now scoff my chocolate down just because I can and nobody can stop me!

2) getting to work and leaving at a set time everyday *wishes I lived in ye old shoe factory days when you left when your work was done*

3) walking to the left (right if your a dirty foreigner) I know it sounds regimented but you have no idea how much easier life could be

I'll just go into my room and read starship troopers. For the hundreth time...

do you have many riots in Gulfport? not that I don't support making kids lives miserable now that I am 20 next year...

Hmm, only rules I can remember involved staying up late and playing too much. Don't think there ever were any exact limits though, it usually was "when we feel it's too late"

The speed limits probably sound arbitrary because they weren't decided by single person most likely.

Let's see... arbitrary rules, eh?

At my mom's house...

...no matter the time of year, you HAVE to wear socks or some kind of slipper. I broke that one all the time. It didn't help that at my dad's house there was no such rule.

...no changing the station on the radio in the bathroom. So I started to leave my own radio in there.

...if you have a bath, you must leave the fan on. That defeated the purpose of having a hot bath in the first place because it would make it cool in there fast.

At my dad's house...

...no Tom Cochrane.

...no setting the house on fire.

...no leaving more than one pair of shoes in at the front entrance; every other pair has to be in the closet. I broke this rule a lot.

As for life...

Well I don't have a problem with speed limits, I find them very ironic. You're supposed to not drive faster than the posted limit, yet when people go under they're honked at not if you go over.

Um.
Was he afraid that Mr. Cochrane's freewheeling opinions about life, highways, and their similarities would corrupt you into some sort of vagabond?

Yeah, theyre there for a purpose, so you dont drive like a Bat outta Hell constantly...

But, i consider them more of a Guideline than actual rules...like, i keep to a maximum of 10 miles over, and keep the limit as the minimum...its generally a good line to follow...
