Swirve.com is one of the oldest online gaming companies, and operator of the first web game, Eath 2025.

I got this email from them:

MAJOR SWIRVE NEWS – JULY 1, 2008!

We wanted to take a minute to let you know about some major changes coming here at Swirve.com over the coming months. As many of you who have been around for a long time now, our games have not gotten the attention that they both need and deserve over the past several years. There are numerous reasons for this – time commitment issues, burnout, etc – but regardless, the result has been that I have not been able to develop our games at the level we have in the past. As my life has taken me in new directions, it has become more difficult to properly manage the site.

Because of this, we have made the decision to allow another company – OMAC Industries – to take over continued development of Swirve’s games. I’ve been the sole developer of the site and games over the past 12 years, so this was an especially difficult decision for me personally, but ultimately, I think it is best for everyone – and with it will come some very exciting developments for you guys.

OMAC has a great deal of experience in the gaming industry, and they have a team of people commited to growing and improving the games. Unlike the past several years where you see me pop up every so often to make changes and improvements, you’ll have a dedicated person who’s primary job is to develop and improve the games. The transition will be taking place over the coming months, and the new developers will be introducing themselves soon. Because you guys have been around for so long, they will be relying on your feedback and input to develop the gameplay sides of the games – both Utopia and Earth – so this is a great opportunity to get involved in the Bugs & Suggestions sections of the forums and offer your ideas.

Initially, while we’re getting them fully versed in running the games and transitioning the game management, the process may be a little rocky, so please be prepared for some technical glitches and the like. I will be working with them to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible, and I will still be involved over the next several months – once that process is over, OMAC will be fully in charge of running the games, and will really be moving into the development & improvement side of things.

While OMAC is great and will protect your user information as aggressively as we have, our privacy policy does limit us from providing your account information to 3rd parties without permission. As such, if you absolutely do not wish to be a part of the transfer, we want to let you know that you may remove yourself from our email list from the Swirve homepage and/or delete your game accounts. Any accounts or email list information deleted within the next week will not have that information transferred to OMAC.

The last twelve years have been an amazing experience for me – they’ve been both a challenge and very exciting, and I’ve learned a great deal. I’ve enjoyed being able to create and design games, and loved hearing your stories of how our games have impacted your lives. I want to say thank you to all of our users who’ve been a part of that experience, and I encourage you to support OMAC and help them modernize and develop the games to keep them as some of the best free games on the web.

Thank you to everyone!

These guys are moving pretty quick - jolt then swirve...

I wonder how long it'll be before they sell OMAC to Activision like they did Demonware...

Hmmm...

No commentary on this?

The Swirve based game boards seem much more interested...

Only a matter of time til Omac sells to EA.

I sure hope not. That'd probably be a sure fire way to get debate on the Nationstates forums completely shut down .

swirve.com now there is a blast from my past, I remember playing Earth2025 many years ago with a bunch of guys from school, and everytime we had computing or where in one of the computing labs for a class we were on here, I always enjoyed playing the game and had forgotten about it. Oh well I might go see if it is worth starting up an account again.
