This wouldn't happen if FB went back to the valid college/work email only policy.

Also if people didn't believe everything they saw on the internet.

Wouldn't liking a social networking site before it was popular sort of defeat the point of it?

Only as much as explaining a joke defeats the point.

But in the end, you still lost it.

And so did everyone else in the thread.

Other evils besides Facebook and Myspace include Livejournal and Wikpedia. Because it knows everything. My old highschool has a wiki page. Why the hell does my old highschool have a wiki page? Why does it need one? Isn't several crappy related websites enough?

Is there any benefit to using a social networking site one cannot get from the more standard communication methods? Any at all?

Ok, well here's an idea. Close the web browser, shut down your computer, stare at the blank screen, and realize what a complete idiot you're being for losing your self confidence over something that happened on the series of tubes. I have to ask how much self confidence she really had if this was able to knock it down to where she couldn't talk to anyone.

You can show off how many friends you have with them. That way no one will be able to claim that you don't have friends, because look at your friends list!

I find facebook useful for organizing teams and clubs within my various sports activities but beyond that.... it's mostly useless and half the time broken.

I like the ones which have been hacked into by students and it says something like "All the girls are horny and bitch about the boys" or "Mr X is tipped to be pricipal next year when Mrs Y retires, but that is a poor choice and sounds like a practical joke"

The thing is though, some people are stronger than others, and anykind of bullying can effect the person being bullied.

We have yet another story in the news this week of a teenager who killed himself because of 'cyber bullying' Should he have just 'maned up'? Are you going to tell his mum that?

Considering some businesses now look up prospective employees on social networking sites, she could easily have lost a possible job if they'd seen the fake profile.

I find facebook useful for keeping in touch with people, organising events, sharing pictures, but it does annoy me at times, especially with all the crap applications that are clogging up the whole system.

:D (I was actually asking a serious question.)

my snark provides part of an answer, actually. at least one aspect of social networking site is really just an elaboration of the social benefits provided by the telegraph and telephone. it makes it much much easier to keep in touch with people who live far away or you just don't see everyday. only now you don't even have to have some pretext for calling, and there is no pressure to have an entire conversation's worth of stuff to say - or write, for that matter, which is how it one-ups email even. just fire off the occasional "hey, how's it going?" like you would if you bumped into each other in real life and contact is maintained.

then you add in the benefit of being able to meet and talk to people with similar interests to you (sorta like we get from NSG - most social networking sites have forums and groups and such). mix in a convenient way to keep track of what your favorite bands are doing, what the drink specials are at the bars and clubs near you, and if there are any shows worth going to this weekend. toss in some outlets for user creativity and commentary, and flavor with general internet time wasting, and you have yourself one hell of a product.

So she fell victim to something that is going to make her close friends sympathise with and support her, and any other acquaintances not really care...and she (probably a Mail reader herself) went to the Daily Mail, which included a great big picture of her, so people...sorry, Daily Mail readers...in the street can now recognise her and say 'Hey, you're that Facebook prostitute person!'. No wonder she's lost her self confidence - she's just realised what an idiot she is.

Generally speaking, I have never seen the point of getting in touch with friends I haven't spoken to in more than 5 years. I figure, if I haven't spoken to them since then, there's probably a reason for it.

yeah, but it turns out the reason is most often that somebody moved or got busy doing something or whatever.

Well either way, I figure that if the relationship can't be maintained through a move and work, it's not particularly worth maintaining. I'm not that cynical about it, like those friends aren't worthy to be my friends. Just, they've got their lives, I've got mine, it's cool, but no point in doing that awkward "HEY! Haven't spoken to you in TEN YEARS! You still dating that guy/girl!?" And then there's the inevitable: "OH GOD! S/he died! Horribly! IN MY ARMS! OH GOD WHY!? WHY!?!?!?!"

Also, apparently today is "Bump Rhyno's threads" day.
