List Confusion

A few months ago, someone criticized the New York Times Bestseller list and I defended it, saying that it was how I found Slaughterhouse V. Since then I realized that I may have been thinking of a different list.

Is the New York Times Bestseller list the one that includes the pulp novels you find in grocery stores and airports? If No, then I was right. If Yes, then:

Which list is the one that only includes the books they sell at an actual bookstore (i.e. Borders, Barnes and Noble, etc.)?

The NYT list is the one crap like Dan Brown and the Harry Potter series appears on, when it's not topped by some "tell-all" biography. Not the place to look for a decent read.

Borders and Barnes & Noble are basically the Top-40 radio of books.

While I love some of the local book stores better at least with Barnes and Noble I can order in good reads even if they do not have them in stock
