Right, they've been so busy with Adipose, Blathereen, The Master, Boe, Carrionites, Cat People, Crespallions, Cybermen, Data Ghosts, the Family, the Gelth, the Hath, the Hoix, the Hosts, the Judoon, the Krillitanes, the Malmooth, the Autons, teh Ood, Plasmavores, Pyroviles, the Racnoss, the Reapers, the slitheen, the Sycorax, Toclafane, the Vashta Nerada, the Vespiform, the Weeping Angels, and Werewolves in the new series that I've hardly noticed how much time was wasted on the Daleks in the new series.

The writers only went overboard when they started on the "bee explanation". David Tennant proceeded to talk so fast that he was no longer speaking English. However this was probably a good thing as from what I did understand it was one of the most convoluted explanations in history.

I'm overjoyed now that the Daleks have returned full force!
When people (mostly Americans) say that Doctor Who is rubbish it's normally becasue they've seen the old series. From my parents they've said that "back in the day" it was the scariest thing ever; it's a matter of perspective.
Theres even a clip on YouTube from "Remembrance Of The Daleks" I believe of the Doctor stopping a Dalke by sneeking up behind it and covering it's eye with a towel. Happy days...
In any case, i've noticed American sows have different formats to BBC ones. The BBC can produce quality material tailored for both majority and minority tastes, the American shows however are cheap humour for cheap laughs designed to rack up the ratings in unbelievably long series. I've never seen a documentary or one-off specialist program that's American made. It's all cheap cheap mind-destroying garbage. Even their news channels are a joke.

My favorite exchange, bar none, between the Daleks and the Cybermen in the episode "Doomsday":
Cyberman: Daleks, be warned. You have declared war upon the Cybermen.
Dalek: This is not war. This is pest control.
Cyberman: We have five million Cybermen, how many are you?
Dalek: Four.
Cyberman: You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?
Dalek: We would destroy the Cybermen with ONE Dalek. You are superior in only one respect.
Cybermen: What is that?
Dalek: You are better at DY-ING!
Was I the only one amazed by the fact the Doctor is regenerating?

Ahh yeah. Doomsday was an amazing episode. Of course everyone roted for the Daleks. The Daleks all have great character, the Cybermen well nothing special.

Doctor Who rocks pretty hard. I borrowed a few DVD's with episodes from the seventies, those are a lot of fun to watch. Also I watched the episode on BBC1 this evening, I'm really curious about the new appearance of the Doctor and the role the Osterhagen Key is going to play in the defeat of the accursed Dalek.
You know, it's way too much fun to impersonate a Dalek... EX-TER-MI-NATE!!!

So far in the new running of the show, series finales have been awesome. Remember rose absorbing the time thingy with Ecleston, remember the master taking over the world with floating heads from the future. I know, awesome, until now. So far this series finale has been nothing compared to the earlier ones. Things have just been too easy for the doctor, and Sarah Jane? Come on, that show is on the CBBC channel.

I believe part of the deal they struck with Terry Nation's estate, to allow the Daleks to appear at all in the new series, was that the Daleks had to feature in each series. Can't find an official reference for it though. Incidentally, the Daleks appeared in just over 10% of the original series episodes anyway so they were never really used that sparingly.

Two things ruined last night's episode:
1) Rose and the Doctor running towards each other- that was just corny and unoriginal! Plus I think everyone knew a Dalek gun shot was going to interupt the travesty that was that scene.
2)"TO BE CONTINUED"- the way they displayed that was poor, and just ruined the ending if not the "seriousness" of the episode.
Other than that I enjoyed the episode.
But... the Daleks have been overused too much to have that fear factor*, and everyone seemed to know that Davros was returning thanks to a blatant press release (or something)- It ruined the suprise, if there even was a suprise! The Daleks have been used for three of the four finales, their appearances are to frequent to be menacing in my opinion. They have appeared in all the new series to varying degrees of success and justification- its like Russell T. Davies is throwing them into the series' for the sake of it.
Say if there was a gap in the use of the Daleks in between the series one finale and the series four finale- no appearances in between- then I think it would work because of the long absence and would have more of a fear/suprise factor.
They could have saved the Daleks v Cybeman storyline for another time and setting- how will the collective ignorance of Humanity not all knowing about/accepting alien life in Doctor Who prevail at this rate? "Daleks in Manhatten" was nothing short of disastrous.
So you can see, I don't like Mr Davies ideas of what makes Doctor Who in this regard.
*Granted, when the heroes here the Dalek radio transmission "Exterminate", it did send a chill down my spine, but thats all!
Stephen Moffat continues to provide episodes you can show to little children to traumatize them.

I agree; they're overused too much. The series one episode was suspenseful, just one unstoppable one that said nothing (imo Dalek voices are cheesy, saying their catchphrase just the once will do me), then the finale (OHNOES ONE MILLION OF THEM) but now the numbers of them fail to impress.
ONE good point is the doctor's regeneration being kept under wraps till the actual airing.
Though for now if I want a decent, coherent and overarching plot, i'll stick to Primeval.

This series finale is supposed to link in to all the series though, with the Daleks being part of an overarching arc rather than being resurrected time after time.
I agree that they seem to be overused though. I think the regeneration's not going to go through permanently. Just a hunch.

I think we will be looking at another parrallel world fix up, or he regens as himself. There's no reason he can't get the same body. The "silence in the library" episode needs the Doctor to have his current face. The woman who knows the doctor, knows him with his current look.
Bazalonia
30-06-2008, 07:39
The Parrallel World fix IMO would be appropriate particularily with the ground work laid with Donna.
Was I the only one amazed by the fact the Doctor is regenerating? It surprised me. I'm also wondering how it work with that library episode a few weeks back, because there his future something-to-be said he only looked much younger, not that he had a totally different face.
Maybe he won't change; I mean, his daughter didn't change with her regeneration (at least she came back from being pretty much dead, so that should count as one).
Oh well, we'll see next week.
