Comfort Food

Everyone (I think) has a food that they love, that everyone else hates.

Mine is creamed tuna on toast. We never had much money when I was growing up so mom, who wasn't the most creative cook and who had little time for it in any case, made cheap meals - pancakes, eggs and bacon, creamed tuna, creamed salmon, lots of hamburger. Creamed tuna and creamed salmon became comfort food. Of course, I've made a few changes - she used oil packed light tuna, I use water packed albacore tuna. She used margarine, I use butter. She seasoned it with salt, I use Kosher salt and dill. She served it on white bread, I serve it on whole grain and nut bread.

What did you grow up with that became your favorite comfort food, that no one else can stand?

Saltine Crackers dipped in soda with very sharp cheddar cheese. I seem to be the only person I know who can even stand it, but to me, it's the best thing since the potato chip.

It's not really a 'comfort food,' but under the right circumstances (those circumstances usually involve a lighter...) cheese that sprays from a can onto crackers.

Mostly because cheese is something that shouldn't be aerosole delivered and therefore amuses me.

I like starvation. Nothing makes me feel better emotionally than a gnawing, desperate sense of constant hunger.

Well, as CToaN, easy cheese and ritz or triscuits [great drunk snack/comfort food]

tuna burgers (can of tuna, french's fried onions, shredded cheese, egg) [summer only]

tuna casserole [usually only fall and winter]

New England clam chowder

Grilled cheese made with a slice or two of American cheese, mayo on one side, cream cheese on the other [perfect after a day of snowboarding, especially with the chowder]

apple fritters/apple cider donuts [fall only]

Cottage cheese with salad dressing on top. Creamy dressings are better than oily ones for this. I can't fathom putting fruit on it.

Macaroni and cheese, made scratch, with medium shell pasta, Tillamook Extra Sharp, blue cheese, and either some gouda or gruyere. For added goodness, and crumbly bacon bits . . . nom nom nom nom!

I dunno if I have a comfort food. I suppose Bananas or Marmite might fit the bill.

I tend to have have scrambled eggs cooked with coarsely ground mustard on top of toast with butter and Marmite spread on the toast.

Then there's my tomato and marmalade pasta sauce. But I don't make that very often at all.

But creamed tuna? *shudders* I just can't stand tuna that's come out of a tin. Never have, but I do love a good tuna steak. I think the only food I get from tins are chopped tomatoes and baked beans, and nothing else at all.

Bush's honey-cooked beans. The ones in the tall cylander. More expensive than storebrand, but with flavor. Outstanding. I have a few in store for special occasions. :)

That sounds disgusting.

my comfort food is probably the classic diced bannana with melted chocolate. it was a super-treat as a kid, and though i don't have it often it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside thinking about it :)

but more generally, nearly all/any food comforts me when i feel in need of comfort. doesn't help the overweight thing much :-S

maybe baked beans on buttered toast counts though

Tuna's tasty. It's even been called the "chicken of the sea," by some in the industry.

Tater tot hot dish. Either that or peanut-butter-and-pickle sandwiches. Depends on the season, really, if it's cold I'm all about the hot dish.

Cottage cheese with salad dressing on top. Creamy dressings are better than oily ones for this. I can't fathom putting fruit on it.

Mom used to make a cottage cheese salad by taking an iceberg lettuce leaf, placing a piece of canned fruit on it (canned peach, pear or pineapple) and then putting a large scoop of cottage cheese on that. She'd make a dressing for it using mayonaisse mixed with some of the syrup the fruit was canned in. Pretty unappetizing,

Nix the blue cheese, replace it with a dab of brie and some gouda, and you're so totally on.

Maybe macaroni and cheese. Probably Tuna Stuff.

Tuna Stuff:
Put a can of tuna, can of cream of mushroom soup, and can of green peas in a pot on the stove. Mix it up, let it get warm. There's not really a time for this, since it's generally "Oh, it looks done". Put it on some toast. It's amazing.

Right now, my comfort food would be some damn chips and queso with a soda. I want a soda like you you would not believe. :/

Gah. The more I think of this thread, the more I want some really nice macaroni and cheese. With fancy cheese and bacon bits. Oh man that sounds so good right now.

And damn all of you who have sodas. :P I'd give one of my toes for a Sunkist.

I usually toss chipotle sauce into my mac and cheese.
I had some raspberry soda the other day. It was pretty decent.
I want some more now.
What have I done.

I use Kosher salt and dill.

Kosher salt? what is that? Also what is creamed tuna?

I suppose my food I enjoy is either grilled cheese with a light dusting of paprika, or noodles with a sauce containg tomato sauce, chilli sauce and tobasco sauce mixed through, or Currywurst grilled sausages covered in a tomato and curry powder sauce.

we call that tuna thing "slop"...but it's quicker to do it in the microwave...I usually skip the peas, as I'm not a huge fan.

As for the creamed tuna, interesting I should try and make it some time, I have a sneky feeling that I have eaten something similar before.

Creamed tuna (yellow fin tunafish in olive oil (spanish or italian will do), butter, lemon juice) on baguette slices.

Chocolate yoghurt (HIGH fat yoghurt, demerara sugar, cocoa powder, high % chocolate slivers usually Lindt excellence 95%).

Lasagne.

Pickled Hermelin (czech cheese similar to camembert stuffed with onions and chily peppers and then pickled). This expecially with beer.
