It's been a while since we had a "Favorite music genre" thread(3-4 months at least) and I decided to make a new one. But this time there's a twist!
...
Okay, maybe there isn't.
So, favorite music genre?
Mine= Hard Rock/Psychedelic rock.

Free jazz, contemporary composition ('classical', but if I use that term that everyone knows what I mean some other music nerd will flip out about how classical was only a short period of time etc etc etc), blues, funk, some ska, surf, indigenous music, folk...to be mean to myself for a change in a music thread, if it's pretentious, I probably like it. Except pretentious pop music, that I pretentiously look down my nose at.

electro-pop gets played most I guess but I absolutely adore ambient (Ambient house to be more specific rather than the new age shite)
I guess it depends on how long an average person can listen to ambient for before they slit their wrists :)

I like every single genre I've ever listened to and I ever will listen to.
That is, anything from smooth jazz to pop on the radio to rap to hardcore metal and speed metal to new age to 1980s to 1940s to classical to accoustic guitar to piano to video game soundtracks to world to techno to hip hop... etc, etc. I like everything.
I take every recommendation anybody ever gives me.

I like almost all music, but progressive rock is probably my favourite form.
I don't really pay that much attention to what genre the music is that I like. There's trends, but I generally ignore genres and listen to what I like.

I like rock (nearly all subgenres), metal (nearly all subgenres), and certain types of electronic music the best (industrial, for the most part). I am also starting to get into rap, jazz, and blues.
Mine= Hard Rock/Psychedelic rock.
Have you discovered the 13th Floor Elevators yet?
I prefer music which has the emphasis on instrumentation rather than lyrics. As a result, I listen mostly to genres that tend to be (near)-instrumental music, like classical, new age, ambient, trance, techno, post-rock, etc, and shy away from genres that rely heavily on lyrics such as a lot of the pop, rock and rap out there. But to every rule there are exceptions.

Pretty much all of Rock and Metal, along with Alternative. (Yes. Even Alternative Rap [Flobots])
That said, I tend to focus more on bands than genres. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Radiohead, that kind of stuff.
Also, I've been toying around with revitalizing Christian music. I'm thinking Christian Death Metal, Christian Rap, Christian Psychedelic, et cetera.

Hardcore industrial death polka music.
Heavy Metal, of course :) Also, being a musician myself, I like to listen to anything that catches my attention incessantly until it is dry and I have all the tricks :)
Incidentally, I'd really love to hear what metalheads from NSG think of my music. You can find samples here (http://www.myspace.com/magicktr).

Bluegrass, ska, old-time country, ragtime, some 90's rock, POD, Thousand Foot Krutch, Flatfoot 56, and traditional celtic jigs and reels. I have rather eclectic tastes in music.
I favor Jewish music and epic metal.
If someone starts a Jewish metal band, I will probably become a diehard fan.

I like both kinds of music: country AND western.
But bluegrass, Southern Rock, classical, and opera occasionally appear on my radio as well.
Good music.
To be honest I don't have a specific genre. There is one genre that I despise to the point of not even really considering it as a true genre--rap--but otherwise I can like a song from just about any genre, really.
I have more along the lines of favorite INSTRUMENTS. For example, my all time favorite instrument is the electric guitar, because of that sound it can produce. Not the endless, pointless super-fast strumming you hear in hard rock or heavy metal, but just good, solid sound.
Actually to be honest I generally tend to prefer instrumental music to vocal music anyway. That's not to say I hate songs--there are plenty that I love, and I could easily lose myself in Elton John or Freddie Mercury's voice for hours--but I do often tend to listen more to pure instrumental.
Hmm, Israeli metal. I'll have to look them up...

Most mainstream music, but none of that rap crap or hardcore metal. I like most modern and classic dance music too, from N-Trance to some New Monkey. Buy you must all agree that the soundtrack to GTA: Vice-City is a work of art

I'm not so good at listing a genre or two, especially because my absolute favourite artists can't really be put into most of them. So how about 'switchblade old-time surrealist blues (Tom Waits)' or 'Brechtian punk cabaret (Dresden Dolls)'. Alternately, let's just list some bands.
Tom Waits, Tom Truax, Dresden Dolls, Rasputina, Sleater-Kinney, Ego Likeness, Abney Park, Vernian Process, Hopeful Machines, Machinae Supremacy, Apocalyptica, The Unextraordinary Gentlemen, Copal, Aura, Xerxes, Attack Attack Attack, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society.
For more conventional/well known stuff: Crosby and Nash, Neil Young, Dire Straits, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, Pink Floyd, Tom Lehrer.
As for more classical: Aaron Copland, Shostakovich, Edvard Grieg, Beethoven.
Alternately known as "Just about everything except most rap and pop".
That's just a bit of it, but it'll do for a start. CToaN, if you're around, could you have a go at pigeonholing me please?

I can appreciate almost all styles of music except for that which is obviously insipid, formulaic, or just trying to push an envelope. I can like anything from gregorian, hymns, folk, jazz, and blues to heavy metal western and speed metal polka, and other experimental styles, if played well and/or from the heart. If it is just a money-gimmick, pop-idol of the moment, hateful/vengeful feel sorry for me crud, i probably wont like it. I hate pop idol stars, gansta rap, emo/screamo (i have to pay for my bmw), and commercial jingles (i still cant get that mcdonald's tune out of my head. :headbang:).
