A Question for My Fellow Americans

If you've been paying attention to the calendar, you'll have noticed that the Friday after next is Independence Day. Here in Japan of course, it's just another day. School isn't out for summer yet, and given that it arrives on the tail end of Japan's rainy season, the last 3 years have seen enough of a downpour to keep me from setting off any fireworks. However, it DOES provide me with a good once-in-a-year excuse as to why we should have something suitably American and calorie laden as opposed to more tofu.

Thus is my question, the last few years I've gone with chili dogs because those were the only things I had access to, this year however there's an actual honest-to-goodness hamburger restaurant that just opened (Japanese tend to over cook hamburgers into something resembling gray charcoal), and I now can get at various other items for a good Fourth of July type meal.

So, my fellow Americans, what IS the best kind of Fourth of July meal? Hamburgers? Hotdogs? Pizza? Something else? What?

I WONDER IF IT'S A TOOL TO PREVENT ALL CAPS POSTS <-test.

EDIT: Okay, it's not. Let me try and correct this again.

don't go to a burger place...make your own. They're so much better.

do 8 oz chuck and 8 oz sirloin. Cut it into cubes (1-2"). Use a food processor to grind the beef (keep them seperate). It usually takes about 10 pulses.

Mix the chuck, sirloin, salt, pepper, worcestershire sauce and some grill seasoning together (or any spice you'd prefer).

Another fun thing to do is chop up some bacon and shred some cheddar and work it into the ground beef.

I usually go for a steak or good burger.

Hotdogs, potato salad, watermelon. Tis the 4th of July menu at the Smunk household.

After dark we build a bonfire and make smores and watch fireworks.

BBQ

(And I feel your pain. I pretty much gave up on the annual 4th bash I threw with my friend Mike, after too many years of pouring rain.)

Okonomiyaki burger. :D

Spank you very much. :P

(However, a local joint does an okonomiyaki that actually does deserve to be called "Japanese pizza" - instead of the usual squid, pork, and shrimp, they use back bacon, sausage, cheese, tomatoes, and mushrooms. :D)

BBQ Chicken, ribs, hot dogs,, hamburgers, green beans, baked potato, corn on the cob, sweet tea, apple pie, something chocolate. That's all one meal, mind you. :)

And top it off with some fire crackers:

Hmmm...

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecued anything, chips, coleslaw, potato salad, jello salad, shishkebobs, and whatever else you can get. The best main course foods are either grilled, barbecued, or deep fat fried. The more, the better. The side dishes are pretty much whatever you want as well as the essential salads I listed and several varieties of potato chips.

I'd go with hamburgers, salad, and corn on the cob myself. But if you want food that just screams "American", you have to go with hot dogs and apple pie. Myself, I just prefer something a little less cliche. I'd have the apple pie, though.;)

And happy fourth of July.:) Even if I wasn't American, I'd still consider the Declaration of Independence something worth celebrating. Up here in Canada I get to celebrate Canada Day and July Fourth just three days apart(I'm a dual citizen).

For me, it's definitely dogs and burgers on the grill (I usually have one of each and then spend the rest of the day wanting to die, as our great forefathers did), deviled eggs, and, ironically, hot German potato salad.

D'oh! Corn on the cob and pies are essential. How could I have forgotten! Mmmmmm...... apple, lemon merangue, blueberry/huckleberry, strawberry, rhubarb, pecan . . . . . .

Your standard picnic foods. Potato Salad, Corn on the Cob, etc.

Oh, and I'd say Hot Dogs, but they've been outdone by Polish Kielbasas with Grilled Onions for me.

Saving this.

Pretty much anything you can put on a grill is good for the 4th; burgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, chicken, steak, etc. The best corn on the cob I've ever had was made on the grill; wrap it in foil and you're good to go.

Now, the important question is this: gas or charcoal?

Exactly like regular hamburgers, then? :p
