Tsvangirai seeks embassy refuge
Breaking News

Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has taken refuge in the Dutch embassy in Harare, officials say.

The move comes a day after he announced he was withdrawing from the 27 June presidential elections in a bid to stop the violence by ruling party militias.

He blames supporters of President Robert Mugabe for the deaths of 86 opposition supporters.

Earlier, more than 60 opposition supporters were arrested at the Harare office of Mr Tsvangirai's MDC party.

Things are heating up in Africa, folks. Could be time for some U.N. style air-conditioning.

It would be interesting to see what the CHinese and Ruskis make of that.

So long as he doesn't come to the UK or USA or their embassies (which would be political suicide for Tsvangirai) this shouldn't pose much of a problem for him, he who fights and runs away and all.

The Russkies won't care.

Since he's never going to win the elections in Zimbabwe, ever, I reckon coming to the UK for guaranteed political asylum and probably a hero's welcome wouldn't actually be a problem for him.

On the other hand, it makes the entire MDC look British-supported. Holland was probably a good move.

The Dutch do have quite a history of colonialism in that area too, but not as bad as the UK certainly.

And probably a good move since there would be a good chance he could 'disappear' otherwise, given Mugabe's prior record.

Perhaps, if not for the fact that the UN shut all the windows, bolted all the exits and is standing outside going "I can't hear you!".

Aye. Last time they did anything cool was during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Anyways, if we can expect any action to come, it'll probably be from the regional powers. I know they plan on lobbying the Africa Union and the South Africa Development Community, so expect Zambian leaders and South African politicos to be making inquiries.

UN style air conditioning? Ohhhh, you mean when they get together to yak on and on about how not to do something in their air conditioned building while the country they're trying to help is in the fire (Pun intended)

Oh, I don't know. "Apartheid" is a Dutch word after all.
Then again, the Brits invented concentration camps.

Germany would have been a nice choice.

I was more thinking of what the Chinese would do, but I wouldn't put it past them to block UN action out of Russia's Great Resurgance or something.

This is what I was thinking of, although it's possible he just went to the nearest embassy he could find.

More accurate is they get an idea to help and the US or Russia vetos it, thus nothing gets done.

You all do realize that the U.N. hasn't acted because the United States(among others) has refused to let it act? The way the U.N. is set up, the U.S. has a major say in its peace actions. If the U.S. government gives a nay, the U.N. can't do shit.

Anyways, if we can expect any action to come, it'll probably be from the regional powers. I know they plan on lobbying the Africa Union and the South Africa Development Community, so expect Zambian leaders and South African politicos to be making inquiries.

We'll see. Personally I suspect this is going to continue to spiral down into an even worse situation.

I wonder why he isn't opposing Mugabe when the reason he kept going is the reason he gave up. I think someone's got to him.

The Daily Mail had a Brilliant Cartoon of this situation today (men on a fence). Anyone able to post it?

What, exactly, should be done? More useless sanctions?

The whole thing would probably go away more quickly if people just ignored it.
