Bill Gates co-founder of Microsoft and the 3rd richest man in the world is set to retire this week at the young age of 52.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=584374

So NSG what does this mean for Microsoft? And the Computing world as a whole? Is it a good or a bad thing?

I just hope is has saved enough of his earnings to be able to live a comfortable life in retirement

I'm sure he has had people that have been doing most of the managing and such for him, for quite some time now.

It probably won't be too changed.

Not that Microsoft could get worse or anything. /lawl

It'll be sad to watch him go, Microsoft has done alot for the computer industry.

This reminds me ... do you think the "Offensensitivity" strip from the early books is someplace? It would be awesome in many a thread circumstance.

Bill Gates apparently does a lot of charity these days, so that should keep him and his wife busy for times to come. It's always fun to bash Microsoft, but still the overwhelming majority of us use Microsoft Windows... so who's really laughing?

except it's not bullshit. The windows kernel is inferior to the linux kernel, and is more prone to crash. IE is a piece of crap, it refuses to comply with web standards, and is generally one step behind firefox, which is a jewel of open source, Microsoft office is a good piece of software, probably a bit better than openoffice, except in price. $400 vs. $0 isn't even close.

But seeing as that was a complete tangent of the OP, we now return to your regularly scheduled thread;

w00t! time to appoint Torvalds to the board of directors. :p

The advantage of Windows is that it's an extremely well-refined product in terms of its user-friendliness, and you can download a whole load of stuff to sort out its obvious flaws.

ah. Gaming is really the only reason to own a windows box, for now. Expect to see more games come to linux/mac as Microsoft looses market share.

Calling Firefox a jewel of open source is pretty ignorant, what with it having more security vulnerabilities than any other browser period. More than even fucking Safari.

If true as long as they acknowledge them and continue to patch them at a much faster pace then their microsoft counterpart it is not a bad thing.

I've noticed that they're really bad at acknowledging it.

Gates and MS have changed the face of the computer industry, and a lot of it we take for granted today.

i'm sure the company will be fine (he stopped being CEO years ago FFS), but i think it will change direction somehow. the boxed software model is being outpaced by web delivered utilities... imo... so how will MS change to reflect this?
