I'm not sure if the original source video passes the acceptability of this forum, so I won't post it yet.

Long story short, a local Japanese guy broke his neck on live TV.

The best version in English I have ATM is a bloggy one:

Watch as Tetsushi Yanagida, a TV personality with TV Miyazaki, dives head first into a rice paddy and snaps his neck during a live broadcast. Ironically, he wasn't supposed to take part in the event. If his co-workers had joked around any longer, he may have drown in the mud.

According to a note on the Jaga Jaga Tengoku corner of the TV Miyazaki website, Yanagida is recuperating and expected to be released from intensive care this week.

The best description I can give there is:
TV guy's covering an event and has an accident where he breaks his neck on live TV.

Summary conclusion: J TV programs are dangerously stupid.

Question: what, if anything should be done about TV programs that endanger participants?

Nothing. They weren't forced into the show, he did it of his own free will. And he wasn't even supposed to be in that event. Idiot. (Not you, the guy who broke his neck)

This doesn't sound like a particularly common occurrence. I don't see a problem.

However, I think such shows with potentially hazardous stunts and events should test them thoroughly before using them on the show. The creators and producers should not do things to contestants that they aren't willing to do to themselves. Preferably on a drunken bet. :)

Nothing should ever come between me and MXC, except for made-up translations and the occasional trick door which doesn't lead to the kiddie pool full of cocaine.

Until they start dropping scorpions on stranded Canadian tourists, I see no reason for action on my part.

He broke his neck jumping into a rice patty? Thats more like a freak accident than anything. That why your not supposed to dive in shallow water.

If we let the government start censoring television, which is what the FCC does, and radio, then the internet is next in line. Besides, censoring content of any sort is essentially breaking the 1rst amendment. you know, the one that says "Congress shall make no law abridging free speech." Christian moralists like to forget about the 1rst amendment. But most liberals like to forget about the second amendment so its kind of a toss up.

No, they should be encouraged. That way this (http://shinymedia.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/07/16/jade20goody20ys3.jpg) can never happen again. Even if I have to enter myself.

Poor man. I think there should be some strong limitations placed on shows like this to prevent such an accident, if possible, from happening.

I watched the video. He deliberately planted himself head-first. I think any show involving any form of physicality can only take so many precautions against idiocy.

That is
1. One of the stupidest things I have seen anyone do.
2. A demonstration of the most irresponsible actions by a TV producer
3. very poor first aid.

I remember when someone died on a Noel Edmonds show by falling out of a crate suspended from a crane. How ironic that his new catchphrase is 'Open the box':)
