Wow, this is ridiculous and saddening at the same time. Addiction to mobile phone and Messenger.

Cell phones are becoming more and more popular, among children and teens who are primarily using their phones for texting, talking to friends and checking e-mail. This increased cell phone usage among young people is evident in both the U.S. and internationally.

According to Spanish media reports, two children ages 12 and 13, were recently admitted to the Children and Youth Mental Health Centre in Lleide, close to Barcelona for cell phone addiction.

Their parents admitted them because they couldn't perform normal activities without their cell phones. In addition, they were doing poorly in school and lied to family members in order to get money for their phones.

Before being admitted, the children had owned their phones for 18 months. Their parents hadn't restricted their cell phone usage, until they notice that it had become a problem.

The children have had to live without their phones for three months.

This is the first time that the Children and Youth Mental Health Centre has had to admit children for cell phone addiction.

Dr. Maite Utges, who runs Children and Youth Mental Health Centre, recommended that parents not allow their children to have a cell phone until they are 16.

This (http://elmundosalud.elmundo.es/elmundosalud/2008/06/13/medicina/1213369184.html) is the original news, although it's in Spanish.

Any thoughts or comments on the subject?

if under 16's can't use phones how are they supposed to chat people up?

I think its a bit drastic really especially as they linked grades slipping with mobile addiction and used the story that they had been using the ill-gotten money to buy phone credit (which we all know has gone to fags)

Im the same age as them and i hardly use my phone.

y helo thar ;)

in the States the powers that be blame everything on ADD attention deficit disorder and the ADD was caused by the cell phones or the computer.
they usually just through the kids on pills and forget them.

sorry something weird haappend to my post
to continue

the real problem is parents don’t raze their children - they let the TV set do that.
and the teachers use a one size fits all education system instead of actually connecting with a student.
the kids are in communication with each other because they need each other to grow up.

But it's not America (thank the gods), and we do not drug children on a whim or blame the problems that children may be presenting on ADD, or on cellphones and computers. Things go deeper than that. Blame the parents, blame society. It's a wide-spread problem, and everyone's to blame.;)

How'd you find out about our training progra-I mean.... Erm.... Correctional facility :D>

But this is very strange. It sounds like these kids were addicted to their cell phones like people addicted to crack. Lying to their parents for cell phone money, unable to function properly without them, it's creepy. But I don't have to worry about that 'cause I don't have a cell phone :).

so... why... didn't... the parents just confiscate their kid's phone?

why did they need to admit them to a health care facility to stop their cell phone usage?

or better yet, stop their kid's Cell Phone service?

I have a feeling the parents just didn't want to end up being the 'villians' in their children's lives.

I don't know of any kids of our friends that are ADD. We have many that have children. I think personally it is a rather small group of kids that get a lot of attention.

I've been asking myself that same question.

why did they need to admit them to a health care facility to stop their cell phone usage?

Apparently, being dependent on a cellphone or on the internet to function will be treated now as an addiction, same as if you were an alcoholic or a drug addict.

or better yet, stop their kid's Cell Phone service?

That would've solved the problem, but I guess the parents feel better by saying their kids just have an addiction and let the doctors treated. They, maybe, are trying to get free of the responsibility.

I have the same feeling. It's easier to blame others than blame themselves for their irresponsibilty.

I suspect that electronic devices are somehow physiologically addictive. Perhaps something as innocent as the blinking of the computer screen, the radiation, the glow of light somehow taps into dopamine production or something.

If companies and/or governments could combine crack and cell phones, why wouldn't they do it?

Indeed, if companies were to find a way to combine phones and crack, they would hit the jackpot in addictive devices.:p

I would think it's more like a gambling addiction... No physical addiction to substances, but a compulsive behavior that threatens normal functioning and puts people in financial problems.

By talking to them "face to face"? When I was 16 (yeah, yeah, the good old times :P) we didn't have mobile phones and we managed... I think this is the best demonstration that there is a problem with mobile phones :p
